E-BooksThe Difference that Gender Makes to International Peace and Security

The Difference that Gender Makes to International Peace and Security
Sara Davies, "The Difference that Gender Makes to International Peace and Security"
English | ISBN: 1138607614 | 2018 | 124 pages | EPUB | 524 KB
Fifteen years after the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 which establishes the Women, Peace and Security agenda, there is now a need to assess the impacts of gender equality efforts, and to understand why and how gender equality reforms have advanced to the extent that they have. This book examines how international peace and security is re-envisioned from a gender perspective by mostly focusing on the nuances presented by the Asia Pacific region. It argues that despite the diversity of political, socio-cultural and economic systems in the Asia Pacific, women and girls in the region continue to experience similar forms of insecurities. Several countries in the Asia Pacific have demonstrated relative peace and stability. In addition, women's leadership and participation in peacebuilding are and continue to be increasingly recognized in the region too. However, as the chapters in this book demonstrate, applying a critical gender analysis allows for the interrogation of 'veneers' of political order which can then mask or normalise everyday gendered insecurities. The analysis of country cases such as Myanmar, Cambodia and Fiji underscores a rethinking of the political order in the Asia Pacific which leaves existing gender inequalities intact.

Every Day I Fight Making a Difference, Kicking Cancer's Ass
Every Day I Fight: Making a Difference, Kicking Cancer's Ass By Stuart Scott, Larry Platt
2015 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 0399174060 | PDF | 3 MB
"When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live." - Stuart Scott The fearless, intimate, and inspiring story behind ESPN anchor Stuart Scott's unrelenting fight against cancer, with a foreword by Robin Roberts. Shortly before he passed away, on January 4, 2015, Stuart Scott completed work on this memoir. It was both a labor of love and a love letter to life itself. Not only did Stuart relate his personal story-his childhood in North Carolina, his supportive family, his athletic escapades, his on-the-job training as a fledgling sportscaster, his being hired and eventual triumphs at ESPN-he shared his intimate struggles to keep his story going. Struck by appendiceal cancer in 2007, Stuart battled this rare disease with an unimaginable tenacity and vigor. Countless surgeries, enervating chemotherapies, endless shuttling from home to hospital to office and back-Stuart continued defying fate, pushing himself through exercises and workout routines that kept him strong. He wanted to be there for his teenage daughters, Sydni and Taelor, not simply as their dad, but as an immutable example of determination and courage. Every Day I Fight is a saga of love, an inspiration to us all.

E-BooksA Mountain of Difference The Lumad in Early Colonial Mindanao

A Mountain of Difference The Lumad in Early Colonial Mindanao
Oona Paredes, "A Mountain of Difference: The Lumad in Early Colonial Mindanao"
English | 2013 | ISBN: 0877277613, 0877277915 | PDF | pages: 109 | 9.1 mb
A Mountain of Difference recasts the early colonial encounter between the indigenous Lumad and Christian missionaries in the southern Philippines. This groundbreaking study of the Lumad―the non-Muslim native peoples of Mindanao―draws on Spanish archival sources and indigenous oral traditions to reconceptualize the political and cultural history of the island's "upland" minorities. While Lumad peoples are widely believed to have successfully resisted the traumatic transformations of Spanish colonization, Oona Paredes makes a case for the deep cultural impact of Catholic missions in Mindanao, arguing that key elements of "traditional" Lumad life today may have evolved from earlier cross-cultural encounters with Iberian Catholic missionaries. Vignettes of Lumad life prior to the nineteenth century show different communities actively engaging colonial power and mediating its exercise according to local priorities, with unexpected results. This book complicates our understanding of Mindanao's history and ethnography, and outlines the beginning of an autonomous history for the marginalized Lumad peoples. The interactions explored in this book illuminate the surprisingly complex cultural and power dynamics at the peripheries of European colonialism.
