E-BooksMasculinity and Queer Desire in Spanish Enlightenment Literature

Masculinity and Queer Desire in Spanish Enlightenment Literature
Masculinity and Queer Desire in Spanish Enlightenment Literature By Mehl Allan Penrose
2014 | 210 Pages | ISBN: 1472422260 | PDF | 3 MB
In Masculinity and Queer Desire in Spanish Enlightenment Literature, Mehl Allan Penrose examines three distinct male figures, each of which was represented as the Other in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Spanish literature. The most common configuration of non-normative men was the petimetre, an effeminate, Francophile male who figured a failed masculinity, a dubious sexuality, and an invasive French cultural presence. Also inscribed within cultural discourse were the bujarrón or 'sodomite,' who participates in sexual relations with men, and the Arcadian shepherd, who expresses his desire for other males and who takes on agency as the voice of homoerotica. Analyzing journalistic essays, poetry, and drama, Penrose shows that Spanish authors employed queer images of men to engage debates about how males should appear, speak, and behave and whom they should love in order to be considered 'real' Spaniards. Penrose interrogates works by a wide range of writers, including Luis Cañuelo, Ramón de la Cruz, and Félix MarÃa de Samaniego, arguing that the tropes created by these authors solidified the gender and sexual binary and defined and described what a 'queer' man was in the Spanish collective imaginary. Masculinity and Queer Desire engages with current cultural, historical, and theoretical scholarship to propose the notion that the idea of queerness in gender and sexuality based on identifiable criteria started in Spain long before the medical concept of the 'homosexual' was created around 1870.

E-BooksCultures of Erudition and Desire in University Pedagogy

Cultures of Erudition and Desire in University Pedagogy
Liana Psarologaki, "Cultures of Erudition and Desire in University Pedagogy "
English | ISBN: 1032073128 | 2022 | 75 pages | PDF | 1113 KB
This book promotes adult education in a university setting as cultivation and the inculcation of culture, democracy, and ethics beyond and through lived experience. It draws on theories from across disciplines, bringing together Aristotelian and post-structuralist thought. This includes Fernando Pessoa's notion of 'erudition' as culture and 'disquiet' as a mode of contemplative living, with Fernand Deligny's 'wanting' as manifestation of life. Liana Psarologaki addresses the pathologies of life and higher education in advanced capitalist societies and creates a manifesto for a new type of university pedagogy.

Lost to Desire The École Psychomatique de Paris and its Encounter With Patients Who Do Not thrive
Lost to Desire: The École Psychomatique de Paris and its Encounter With Patients Who Do Not thrive By Wolfgang Lassmann
2021 | 272 Pages | ISBN: 1032132612 | PDF | 29 MB
This book covers the work of psychoanalysts in post WWII France with patients beset by somatic problems with little manifest fantasy life, and how their concept of opératoire continues to inform the theory and practice of working with patients in crisis. The author explores what the new concept has elicited in a community of practitioners - close to the École Psychosomatique de Paris - over a period of some sixty years. As a "skin for thought" it facilitated change while preserving coherence, gradually beginning to attract further considerations. Important themes have included: the early groundwork necessary for the configuration of fantasy, the importance of a shared imaginary, the role of denial and obliterated memories as a bond between people, emergency measures of a Me cut off from revitalisation, the effects of the rhythms and atmosphere at the workplace on family life, and the consequences of a crisis suppressed for lack of a holding frame. As psychoanalytic discourse adapted to the challenges, the original perspective changed aspect, moving from a systematic evaluation of what the patients did not produce to what the analyst had to fill in to make sense of the situation. Clashing with the terrain, French psychoanalysts raised important problems about psychic anaemia that are stimulating and deserve cross-cultural discussion. This book will appeal to psychoanalysts in practice and training who wish to learn more about this ground-breaking work on memory and trauma, and how to apply it to their own practice.

E-BooksStatus and Culture How Our Desire for Social Rank Creates Taste, Identity, Art, Fashion, and Constant Change [Audiobook]

Status and Culture How Our Desire for Social Rank Creates Taste, Identity, Art, Fashion, and Constant Change [Audiobook]
English | ASIN: B09LJTZ2TB | 2022 | 13 hours and 8 minutes | MP3 | M4B | 358 MB
Solving the long-standing mysteries of culture—from the origin of our tastes and identities, to the perpetual cycles of fashions and fads—through a careful exploration of the fundamental human desire for status. All humans share a need to secure their social standing, and this universal motivation structures our behavior, forms our tastes, determines how we live, and ultimately shapes who we are. We can use status, then, to explain why some things become "cool," how stylistic innovations arise, and why there are constant changes in clothing, music, food, sports, slang, travel, hairstyles, and even dog breeds. In Status and Culture, W. David Marx weaves together the wisdom from history, psychology, sociology, anthropology, economics, philosophy, linguistics, semiotics, cultural theory, literary theory, art history, media studies, and neuroscience to demonstrate exactly how individual status seeking creates our cultural ecosystem.
