Elizabeth Fox-Genovese Paternalism's Daughter
Elizabeth Fox-Genovese: Paternalism's Daughter By Deborah A. Symonds (author)
2021 | 352 Pages | ISBN: 0813945135 | PDF | 4 MB
A celebrated historian and women's studies scholar, Elizabeth Fox-Genovese roiled both disciplines with her transition from Marxist-inclined feminist to conservative public intellectual. In the first major biography of this singular and controversial scholar, Deborah Symonds explores Fox-Genovese's enormous personal archive and traces Fox-Genovese's life from a brilliant girl in the World War II era struggling with demanding parents and anorexia to a woman intellectual in the later twentieth century and into the new millennium, providing an illuminating and moving psychological portrait. Never settled, Fox-Genovese was, by turns, a French historian, Marxist feminist, literary critic, southern historian, Red Tory, public intellectual, and conservative Catholic but still, in her eyes, a feminist. This biography sheds new light on its subject's dynamic and intellectually productive marriage to leftist historian Eugene D. Genovese. In her provocative politics, which confront us still with the complexities of left and right, and her constant search for her place in the world, Fox-Genovese's story resonates more strongly than ever.

E-BooksGod's only daughter Spenser's Una as the invisible Church

God's only daughter Spenser's Una as the invisible Church
God's only daughter: Spenser's Una as the invisible Church By Kathryn Walls
2013 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 0719090377 | PDF | 10 MB
In this study, Kathryn Walls challenges the standard identification of Una with the post-Reformation English Church, arguing that she is, rather, Augustine's City of God - the invisible Church, whose membership is known only to God. Una's story (its Tudor resonances notwithstanding) therefore embraces that of the Synagogue before the Incarnation as well as that of the Church in the time of Christ and thereafter. It also allegorises the redemptive process that sustains the true Church. Una is fallible in canto I. Subsequently, however, she comes to embody divine perfection. Her transformation depends upon the intervention of the lion as Christ. Convinced of the consistency and coherence of Spenser's allegory, Walls offers fresh interpretations of Abessa (as Synagoga), of the fauns and satyrs (the Gentiles), and of Una's dwarf (adiaphoric forms of worship). She also reinterprets Spenser's marriage metaphor, clarifying the significance of Red Cross as Una's spouse in the final canto.

The Daughter of the Swamp King by Hans Christian Andersen
The Daughter of the Swamp King by Hans Christian Andersen
English | MP3@192 kbps | 1h 35m | 131.0 MB
One of the strangest and, sadly, least known tales by Hans Christian Andersen, "The Daughter of the Swamp King" is complex and comprehensive. It covers great distances, long spans of time, transitions between real and imaginary worlds, and a variety of challenges and conflicts. The author relentlessly exposes his characters to the crises of perception, faith, conviction, and inner strength. How they venture through these tribulations and whether they stand all these trials successfully is for the reader to discover and decide.

The Bookie's Daughter
Heather Abraham, "The Bookie's Daughter"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 0983863512 | EPUB | pages: 316 | 0.7 mb
A provocative and candid memoir spanning the first nineteen years of the author's life, The Bookie's Daughter resonates with elements of Sopranos and Running with Scissors-zany, violent, and oh-so-human. Written by Heather Abraham, The Bookie's Daughter is a wild ride through a childhood dominated by Big Al, the author's larger-than-life bookie father, and Bonnie, her trigger-happy alcoholic mother. Devoted to their family yet in thrall to their prodigious addictions, they recklessly plunged their daughters into a dangerous life of crime. Join The Bookie's Daughter in a perfect storm of adolescent angst, crime, and shocking adventures. Follow along as the author and her sister traverse a childhood where gambling, police raids, trials, public scorn, spitting Studda Bubbas, hitmen, IRA gunrunners, pedophiles, bodyguards, and midnight runs for illegal goods were considered routine. The narrative is twistedly entertaining, with a range of colorful wacky characters, as well as shockingly raw in its recognition of the destructive nature of dysfunctional family dynamics and parental addictions. Throughout a series of outrageous, oftentimes violent, misadventures, Abraham manages to conjure up loony vistas, thick with description and humorous acceptance.
