E-BooksMobile and Ubiquitous Media Critical and International Perspectives

Mobile and Ubiquitous Media Critical and International Perspectives
Mobile and Ubiquitous Media: Critical and International Perspectives By Michael S. Daubs (editor), Vincent R. Manzerolle (editor)
2017 | 312 Pages | ISBN: 1433148412 | PDF | 5 MB
What does the phrase "ubiquitous media" actually mean? Individual definitions are just as varied and ubiquitous as the media to which they refer. As a result, there is to date no large-scale theoretical framework through which we can understand the term. The goal of this volume is to provide a diverse set of critical, theoretical, and international approaches useful to those looking for a more diverse and nuanced understanding of what ubiquitous media means analytically. In contrast to other existing texts on mobile media, these contributions on mobile media are contextualised within a larger discussion on the nature and history of ubiquitous media. Other sections of this edited volume are dedicated to historical perspectives on ubiquitous media, ubiquitous media and visual culture, the role of ubiquitous media in surveillance, the political economy of ubiquitous media, and the way a ubiquitous media environment affects communities, spaces, and places throughout the world.

E-BooksSiting Postcoloniality Critical Perspectives from the East Asian Sinosphere

Siting Postcoloniality Critical Perspectives from the East Asian Sinosphere
Pheng Cheah, "Siting Postcoloniality: Critical Perspectives from the East Asian Sinosphere "
English | ISBN: 147801931X | 2022 | 344 pages | PDF | 5 MB
The contributors to Siting Postcoloniality reevaluate the notion of the postcolonial by focusing on the Sinosphere-the region of East and Southeast Asia that has been significantly shaped by relations with China throughout history. Pointing out that the history of imperialism in China and Southeast Asia is longer and more complex than Euro-American imperialism, the contributors complicate the traditional postcolonial binaries of center-periphery, colonizer-colonized, and developed-developing. Among other topics, they examine socialist China's attempts to break with Soviet cultural hegemony; the postcoloniality of Taiwan as it negotiates the legacy of Japanese colonial rule; Southeast Asian and South Asian diasporic experiences of colonialism; and Hong Kong's complex colonial experiences under the British, the Japanese, and mainland China. The contributors show how postcolonial theory's central concepts cannot adequately explain colonialism in the Sinosphere. Challenging fundamental axioms of postcolonial studies, this volume forcefully suggests that postcolonial theory needs to be rethought.

E-BooksThe Merry Wives of Windsor New Critical Essays

The Merry Wives of Windsor New Critical Essays
Evelyn Gajowski, Phyllis Rackin, "The Merry Wives of Windsor: New Critical Essays"
English | 2014 | pages: 286 | ISBN: 0415845041, 1138377872 | PDF | 2,7 mb
The Merry Wives of Windsor has recently experienced a resurgence of critical interest. At times considered one of Shakespeare's weaker plays, it is often dismissed or marginalized; however, developments in feminist, ecocritical and new historicist criticism have opened up new perspectives and this collection of 18 essays by top Shakespeare scholars sheds fresh light on the play. The detailed introduction by Phyllis Rackin and Evelyn Gajowski provides a historical survey of the play and ties into an evolving critical and cultural context. The book's sections look in turn at female community/female agency; theatrical alternatives; social and theatrical contexts; desire/sexuality; nature and performance to provide a contemporary critical analysis of the play.

E-BooksThe Magic Glasses of Critical Thinking Seeing Through Alternative Fact & Fake News

The Magic Glasses of Critical Thinking Seeing Through Alternative Fact & Fake News
The Magic Glasses of Critical Thinking: Seeing Through Alternative Fact & Fake News By D. Michael Rivage-Seul
2018 | 264 Pages | ISBN: 1433149516 | PDF | 3 MB
D. Michael Rivage-Seul's eye-opening new book, The Magic Glasses of Critical Thinking: Seeing Through Alternative Fact & Fake News, invites readers to try out what Baba Dick Gregory calls the "magic glasses" of critical thinking. Gregory's eyewear suggests ten rules for seeing through the haze created by any culture's ruling group mind. The criteria urge students to: (1) reflect systemically, (2) select market (as an organizing principle), (3) reject neutrality, (4) suspect ideology, (5) respect history, (6) inspect scientifically, (7) quadra-sect violence, (8) connect with your deepest self, (9) collect conclusions, and (10) detect silences. The Magic Glasses of Critical Thinking then applies those criteria to a broader contemporary context where fascist tendencies reminiscent of the 1930s are unmistakable. Surprising interpretations of familiar Hollywood and documentary films illustrate every point, making this book a fascinating text and discussion starter for critical thinking and composition courses at the secondary and post-secondary levels.

E-BooksPhilosophy and Critical Pedagogy Insurrection and Commonwealth

Philosophy and Critical Pedagogy Insurrection and Commonwealth
Philosophy and Critical Pedagogy: Insurrection and Commonwealth By Charles Reitz
2016 | 255 Pages | ISBN: 1433133636 | PDF | 3 MB
Critical pedagogy, political economics, and aesthetic theory combine with dialectical and materialist understandings of science, society, and revolutionary politics to develop the most radical goals of society and education. In Philosophy and Critical Pedagogy: Insurrection and Commonwealth, Marcuse's hitherto misunderstood and neglected philosophy of labor is reconsidered, resulting in a labor theory of ethics. This develops commonwealth criteria of judgment regarding the real and enduring economic and political possibilities that concretely encompass all of our engagement and action. Marcuse's newly discovered 1974 Paris Lectures are examined and the theories of Georg Lukács and Ernest Manheim contextualize the analysis to permit a critical assessment of the nature of dialectical methodology today. Revolutionary strategy and a common-ground political program against intensifying inequalities of class, race, and gender comprise the book's commonwealth counter-offensive.

E-BooksCritical Perspectives on Mongo Beti

Critical Perspectives on Mongo Beti
Critical Perspectives on Mongo Beti By Stephen H. Arnold
1998 | 453 Pages | ISBN: 0894105868 | PDF | 19 MB
Mongo Beti is the most prolific and widely read author from Cameroon, and his writings have called world attention to political corruption in his native country. These essays cover the three distinct periods of Beti's greatest activity as a writer-the first, which ran from 1953 to 1958; the re-emergence that began in 1974; and the third phase, which Arnold traces to Beti's brief return from exile in 1991.Referring to the writer as a contemporary Voltaire, as his region's most effective "gadfly" and commentator, Arnold begins the book with a discussion of Beti's place in politics and literature.

E-BooksA Road Less Traveled Critical Literacy and Language Learning in the Classroom, 1964-1996

A Road Less Traveled Critical Literacy and Language Learning in the Classroom, 1964-1996
A Road Less Traveled: Critical Literacy and Language Learning in the Classroom, 1964-1996 By Robert W. Blake, Brett Elizabeth Blake
2018 | 306 Pages | ISBN: 143313263X | PDF | 3 MB
A Road Less Traveled: Critical Literacy and Language Learning in the Classroom, 1964-1996 takes us through what Robert W. Blake calls the "jaunty journey" of the English/English Language Arts classroom from its linguistic and literature foundations, to emphases on close reading techniques and structures to composing and responding to literature. A Road Less Traveled heads bumpily into the path of learning how to work with "non-native speakers" and other "basic" students toward a (re)-burst of a renewed interest in poetry and drama, reader response, a process approach to writing, and the diverse student, showing through the often winding and blurry road along the journey of our literacy travels over 30 years, that what we understood best about reading and writing has stood the test of time.
