Jane Wood, Theresa A. Gannon, "Public Opinion and Criminal Justice: Context, Practice and Values"
English | 2008 | pages: 269 | ISBN: 1843924005, 1843924013 | PDF | 5,8 mb
Public opinion is vital to the functioning of the criminal justice system but it is not at all clear how best to establish what this is, and what views people have on different aspects of criminal justice and the criminal justice system. Politicians and the media often assume that the public wants harsher, tougher and longer sentences, and policies may be shaped accordingly. Detailed research and more specific polling often tells a different story.

E-BooksMultilingual Development English in a Global Context

Multilingual Development English in a Global Context
Multilingual Development: English in a Global Context
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1108844022 | 311 Pages | PDF | 3 MB
English as a global lingua franca interacts with other languages across a wide range of multilingual contexts. Combining insights from linguistics, education studies, and psychology, this book addresses the role of English within the current linguistic dynamics of globalization. It takes Singapore, Hong Kong, and Dubai as case studies to illustrate the use of English in different multilingual urban areas, arguing that these are places where competing historical assessments, and ideological conceptions of monolingualism and multilingualism, are being acted out most forcefully. It critically appraises the controversial concept of multilingual advantages, and studies multilingual cross-linguistic influence in relation to learning English in bilingual heritage contexts. It also scrutinises multilingual language policies in their impact on attitudes, identities, and investment into languages. Engaging and accessible, it is essential reading for academic researchers and advanced students of bi- and multilingualism, globalization, linguistic diversity, World Englishes, sociolinguistics, and second/third language acquisition.

E-BooksGeorge Bernard Shaw in Context

George Bernard Shaw in Context
Brad Kent, "George Bernard Shaw in Context "
English | ISBN: 1107047455 | 2015 | 418 pages | PDF | 24 MB
When George Bernard Shaw died in 1950, the world lost one of its most well-known authors, a revolutionary who was as renowned for his personality as he was for his humour, humanity, and rebellious thinking. He remains a compelling figure who deserves attention not only for how influential he was in his time, but for how relevant he is to ours. This collection sets Shaw's life and achievements in context, with forty-two scholarly essays devoted to subjects that interested him and defined his work. Contributors explore a wide range of themes, moving from factors that were formative in Shaw's life, to the artistic work that made him most famous and the institutions with which he worked, to the political and social issues that consumed much of his attention, and, finally, to his influence and reception. Presenting fresh material and arguments, this collection will point to new directions of research for future scholars.

E-BooksMedia Constrained by Context International Assistance and Democratic Media Transition in the Western Balkans

Media Constrained by Context International Assistance and Democratic Media Transition in the Western Balkans
Media Constrained by Context: International Assistance and Democratic Media Transition in the Western Balkans By Kristina Irion (editor), Tarik Jusić (editor)
2018 | 360 Pages | ISBN: 9633862590 | PDF | 6 MB
This books draws a comparative balance of twenty years' international media assistance in the five countries of the Western Balkans. The central question was what happens to imported models when they are transposed onto the newly evolving media systems of transitional societies. Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia and Serbia undertook a range of media reforms to conform with accession requirements of the European Union and the standards of the Council of Europe, among others. The essays explore the nexus between the democratic transformation of the media and international media assistance. The cross-national analysis concludes that the effects of international assistance are highly constrained by the local context. From today's vantage point it becomes obvious, that scaling media assistance does not necessarily improve outcomes. The experiences in the region suggest that imported solutions have not been very cognitive in all aspects of local conditions but international strategies tent to be rather schematic and lacked strategic approaches to promote media policy stability, credible media reform and implementation. The book offers valuable insights into the nature and effects of media assistance and the strategies deployed by international aid agencies, local political forces, media professionals, civil society organizations and other actors.

Infrastructural Lives Urban Infrastructure in Context
Infrastructural Lives: Urban Infrastructure in Context By Stephen Graham (editor), Colin McFarlane (editor)
2014 | 262 Pages | ISBN: 0415748518 | PDF | 4 MB
Infrastructural Lives is the first book to describe the everyday experience and politics of urban infrastructures. It focuses on a range of infrastructures in both the global South and North. The book examines how day-to-day experience and perception of infrastructure provides a new and powerful lens to view urban sustainability, politics, economics, cultures and ecologies. An interdisciplinary group of leading and emerging urban researchers examine critical questions about urban infrastructure in different global contexts. The chapters address water, sanitation, and waste politics in Mumbai, Kampala and Tyneside, analyse the use of infrastructurein the dispossession ofPalestinian communities, explore the pacification of Rio's favelas in the run-up to the 2014 World Cup, describe how people's bodies and lives effectively operate as 'infrastructure' in many major cities, and also explores tentative experiments with low-carbon infrastructures. These diverse cases and perspectives are connected by a shared sense of infrastructure not just as a 'thing', a 'system', or an 'output,' but as a complex social and technological process that enables - or disables - particular kinds of action in the city. Infrastructural Lives is crucial reading for academics, researchers, students and practitioners in urban studies globally.
