It is a pleasure to have been asked to provide the preface to The International Comparative Legal Guide to Data Protection 2019. This edition contains an introductory chapter from White & Case LLP, which briefly charts the technological changes that have driven the evolution of data protection laws in recent decades, and reviews the major challenges that businesses face in complying with the EU's General Data Protection Regulation in particular. It also explores some of the most significant developing trends in privacy laws globally, and illuminates some of the key policy choices that governments will need to consider as they seek to strike a balance between the right to privacy and the development of data-driven economies. Three further general chapters analyse, respectively, the application of data protection law in outer space; the use of binding corporate rules; and data business activities in Japan - illustrating the far-reaching impact of this field of practice. The guide provides 42 country question and answer chapters, focusing on key privacy and data protection compliance issues under local laws in countries around the world. Free Download Roger T. Ames, "Tianxia in Comparative Perspectives: Alternative Models for a Possible Planetary Order "
English | ISBN: 0824895177 | 2023 | 390 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Tianxia―conventionally translated as "all-under-Heaven"―in everyday Chinese parlance simply means "the world." But tianxia is also a geopolitical term found in canonical writings that has a deeper historical and philosophical significance. Although there are many understandings of tianxia in this literature, interpretations within the Chinese process cosmology generally begin with an ecological understanding of intra-national relations that acknowledge the mutuality and interdependence of all economic and political activity.

E-BooksThe Political Economy of De–liberalization A Comparative Study on Austria, Germany and Switzerland

The Political Economy of De–liberalization A Comparative Study on Austria, Germany and Switzerland
Free Download The Political Economy of De-liberalization: A Comparative Study on Austria, Germany and Switzerland by Anna Fill
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2019 | 170 Pages | ISBN : 3030010651 | 5.1 MB
This book explores the politics behind "de-liberalization", defined as policy reforms that constrain markets and their underlying mechanisms. By offering a comparative study on the governmental reform strategies and policy choices of Austria, Germany and Switzerland, it demonstrates that de-liberalization processes are a common reform option for governments. Utilizing a novel dataset on liberalization covering policy reform trajectories in 38 industrialized countries between 1973 and 2013, it shows that governments often draw on strategies of de-liberalization in the fields of social, welfare and labor market policy, where they can be used as compensation for the electorate in the context of liberalizing reforms. As such, the book makes an important contribution to the field of political economy by capturing the turning of the tide in scholarly and policy attention, away from liberalization and towards a re-embedding and re-regulation of economic activity.

The Idea of QiGi East Asian and Comparative Philosophical Perspectives
Free Download Suk Choi, "The Idea of Qi/Gi: East Asian and Comparative Philosophical Perspectives"
English | ISBN: 149855797X | 2018 | 192 pages | EPUB | 373 KB
The notion of qi/gi (氣) is one of the most pervasive notions found within the various areas of the East Asian intellectual and cultural traditions. While the pervasiveness of the notion provides us with an opportunity to observe the commonalities amongst the East Asian intellectual and cultural traditions, it also allows us to observe the differences. This book focuses more on understanding the different meanings and logics that the notion of qi/gi has acquired within the East Asian traditions for the purpose of understanding the diversity of these traditions. This volume begins to fulfill this task by inquiring into how the notion was understood by traditional Korean philosophers, in addition to investigating how the notion was understood by traditional Chinese philosophers.

E-BooksThe Criminalization of Violence Against Women Comparative Perspectives

The Criminalization of Violence Against Women Comparative Perspectives
Free Download Heather Douglas, "The Criminalization of Violence Against Women: Comparative Perspectives "
English | ISBN: 0197651844 | 2023 | 344 pages | EPUB, PDF | 902 KB + 14 MB
Historically states have failed to seriously confront violence against women. In response, in many countries women's rights movements have called on the government to prioritize state intervention in cases involving violence between intimate partners, sexual harassment, rape, and sexual assault by both strangers and intimate partners. Those interventions have taken various forms, including the passage of substantive civil and criminal laws governing intimate partner violence, rape and sexual assault, and sexual harassment; the development of civil orders of protection; and the introduction of procedures in the criminal legal system to ensure the effective intervention of police and prosecutors. Indeed, many countries have relied upon intervention by the criminal legal system to meet their requirements under international human rights standards that obligate states to prevent, protect from, prosecute, punish, and provide redress for violence. Although states have taken divergent approaches to the passage and implementation of criminal laws and procedures to address violence against women, two things are clear: criminalization is a primary strategy relied upon by most nations, and yet criminalization is not having the desired impact.

E-BooksSustainable Ecotourism in Central America Comparative Advantage in a Globalized World

Sustainable Ecotourism in Central America Comparative Advantage in a Globalized World
Free Download Andrew P. Miller, "Sustainable Ecotourism in Central America: Comparative Advantage in a Globalized World"
English | ISBN: 073918024X | 2016 | 172 pages | EPUB | 1253 KB
Sustainable Ecotourism in Central America: Comparative Advantage in a Globalized World examines the factors necessary for Nicaragua, Panama, and Belize to implement an economic development model based on the growth of ecotourism and foreign direct investment. In order to determine what factors are necessary to implement this model, this book analyzes the state of ecotourism development in Costa Rica and the lessons that the Costa Rican case can provide for other Central American states. It also assesses the effects of globalization and the increasing implementation of free market policies on the development of ecotourism. The book ultimately argues that globalization and neoliberalism have made it more likely that states will be able to adopt a development model based on ecotourism and foreign direct investment due to the manner in which neoliberalism and globalization help to create ever-increasing economic interconnectedness and openness. While globalization has served to shrink the world and make it easier for people to travel, the economic openness of neoliberalism has facilitated global flows of both tourists and international capital into every corner of the world. Understanding the way globalization and neoliberalism interact with ecotourism development and foreign direct investment is the key to formulating policy recommendations for states in Central America to jumpstart their economic development.
