Plutarch's Pelopidas A Historical and Philological Commentary
Free Download Plutarch's Pelopidas: A Historical and Philological Commentary By Aristoula Georgiadou
1997 | 258 Pages | ISBN: 3519076543 | PDF | 5 MB
This Commentary on the Life of Pelopidas originates with my doctoral dissertation of which it is a completely revised and expanded version. My aim has been to present and assess the information available on this Life and, where possible, to resolve its outstanding problems. In some cases, however, where I feel that the evidence does not allow for certainty, I follow Wittgenstein's precept "Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, daruber muss man schweigen." I wish to thank John Buckler of the University of Illinois for his many insightful suggestions and corrections which he provided with unfailing generosity; David Larmour of Texas Tech University, who offered numerous helpful comments and stylistic advice; Gerald Browne and David Sansone of the University of Illinois for their valuable advice, especially with regard to philological matters. I am also grateful to Ludwig Koenen, Christoph Konrad and an anonymous reader, all of whom made many essential corrections and saved me from several infelicities. It is also a pleasure to acknowledge my debt to Angeliki Tzanetou, who always gave most generously of her time and intellect, and to Carol Buckler, who has been a source of thoughtful and provoking conversation over the years. Work on the manuscript was greatly facilitated by the technical assistance of Devin Casenhiser, Mary Ellen Fryer and Walter Spencer.

Dante and the Practice of Humility A Theological Commentary on the Divine Comedy
Free Download Dante and the Practice of Humility: A Theological Commentary on the Divine Comedy by Rachel K. Teubner
English | July 13, 2023 | ISBN: 1009315358 | True PDF | 350 pages | 5.3 MB
In this book, Rachel Teubner offers an exploration of humility in Dante's Divine Comedy, arguing that the poem is an ascetical exercise concerned with training its author gradually in the practice of humility, rather than being a reflection of authorial hubris. A contribution to recent scholarship that considers the poem to be a work of self-examination, her volume investigates its scriptural, literary, and liturgical sources, also offering fresh feminist perspectives on its theological challenges.

Commentary on Isaiah
Free Download Commentary on Isaiah By Eusebius of Caesarea, Joel C. Elowsky (editor)
2013 | 332 Pages | ISBN: 083082913X | PDF | 6 MB
Preaching's Preacher's Guide to the Best Bible Reference for 2014 (Old Testament Commentaries)Eusebius of Caesarea (ca. 260--ca. 340), one of the early church's great polymaths, produced significant works as a historian (Ecclesiastical History), geographer (Onomasticon), philologist, exegete (commentaries on the Psalms and Isaiah), apologist (Preparation for and Demonstration of the Gospel) and theologian. His Commentary on Isaiah is one of his major exegetical works and the earliest extant Christian commentary on the great prophet. Geographically situated between Alexandria and Antioch, Eusebius approached the text giving notable attention to historical detail and possible allegorical interpretation. But above all, employing the anologia fidei, he drew his readers? attention to other passages of Scripture that share a common vocabulary and theological themes, thus allowing Scripture to interpret Scripture. Here, for the first time in English, Jonathan Armstrong provides readers with a highly serviceable translation of Eusebius's notably difficult Greek text, along with a helpful introduction and notes.

E-BooksCommentary on Galatians

Commentary on Galatians
Free Download Commentary on Galatians By St. Jerome
2010 | 311 Pages | ISBN: 0813201217 | PDF | 2 MB
Prior to the middle of the fourth century, the exegesis of St. Paul had been monopolized by Greek and Syriac commentators. Then, in the space of half a century (c. 360 - c. 409), there appeared no less than 52 commentaries by six different Latin authors. This sudden flurry of literary activity has been dubbed the western "Renaissance of Paul." Jerome's commentaries on four Pauline epistles (Galatians, Ephesians, Titus, Philemon), which he composed in 386 shortly after establishing himself in Bethlehem, occupy a central place in this relatively short but prolific segment of the history of Pauline exegesis in Latin.About the AuthorAndrew Cain is associate professor of classics at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has published widely on Jerome and other late Latin writers. He has authored The Letters of Jerome: Asceticism, Biblical Exegesis, and the Construction of Christian Authority in Late Antiquity and has co-edited Jerome of Stridon: His Life, Writings, and Legacy as well as The Power of Religion in Late Antiquity.About the AuthorAndrew Cain is associate professor of classics at the University of Colorado at Boulder. A Trackless Path A Commentary on the Great Completion (Dzogchen) Teaching of Jigmé Lingpa's Revelations of Ever–present Good
Free Download A Trackless Path: A Commentary on the Great Completion (Dzogchen) Teaching of Jigmé Lingpa's Revelations of Ever-present Good By Ken McLeod
2016 | 148 Pages | ISBN: 0989515338 | EPUB | 1 MB
The first section of A Trackless Path is a thoughtful introduction to the text and McLeod's relationship with it; the second is his beautiful and evocative translation of an ancient poem on dzogchen; the third and main part of the book is his thoughtful commentary through which he illuminates the meaning of the poem, verse by verse. McLeod is clearly writing (and writing clearly) for the seeker in today's world who is called to pursue non-dual, non-conceptual awareness. McLeod's lucid practice-oriented commentary is enriched by the seamless interweaving of experiences from his own spiritual journey. What emerges is a picture of the direct and personal ways McLeod found to meet the challenges he encountered on his path. This is a book for the practitioner of any contemplative tradition-Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Taoism, Judaism or non-dual awareness. "McLeod's careful wise scholarship and craftsmanship, and his determined, almost heroic, point of view on practice, make this book a thrilling read." --Norman Fischer, author of What is Zen: Plain Talk for a Beginner's Mind "A work of exceptional beauty, elegance, and spiritual depth... the unparalleled teachings of Dzogchen are illuminated from within the practice and experience of one of our most gifted translators and meditation teachers." --Reggie Ray, author of Touching Enlightenment: Finding Realization in the Body "Through this extraordinary text and Ken McLeod's brilliant translation and commentary, the nature of trekchö clearly shines through... pointing clearly and unequivocally at its instantaneous spontaneity..." --Keith Dowman, author of Spaciousness, the radical dzogchen of the vajra-heart His skillful and deep commentaries offer a new paradigm of interpretation. He approaches the mystical songs of great masters as poetic expressions of inner transformation rather than philosophical presentations of noble truths ... --Sylvia Wetzel, author Women and Buddhism.
