E-BooksComic empires Imperialism in cartoons, caricature, and satirical art

Comic empires Imperialism in cartoons, caricature, and satirical art
Richard Scully, "Comic empires: Imperialism in cartoons, caricature, and satirical art "
English | ISBN: 1526142945 | 2019 | 456 pages | PDF | 35 MB
Comic empires is a unique collection of new research exploring the relationship between imperialism and political cartoons, caricature, and satirical art. Edited by leading scholars across both fields (and with contributions from contexts as diverse as Egypt, Australia, the United States, and China, as well as Europe) the volume provides new perspectives on well-known events, and illuminates little-known players in the 'great game' of empire in modern times. Some of the finest comic art of the period is deployed as evidence, and examined seriously, in its own right, for the first time. Accessible to students of history at all levels, Comic empires is a major addition to the world-leading 'Studies in Imperialism' series, as well as standing alone as an innovative and significant contribution to the ever-growing international field of comics studies.

The Comic Storytelling of Western Japan Satire and Social Mobility in Kamigata Rakugo
M. W. Shores, "The Comic Storytelling of Western Japan: Satire and Social Mobility in Kamigata Rakugo"
English | ISBN: 1108831508 | 2021 | 270 pages | PDF | 8 MB
Rakugo, a popular form of comic storytelling, has played a major role in Japanese culture and society. Developed during the Edo (1600-1868) and Meiji (1868-1912) periods, it is still popular today, with many contemporary Japanese comedians having originally trained as rakugo artists. Rakugo is divided into two distinct strands, the Tokyo tradition and the Osaka tradition, with the latter having previously been largely overlooked. This pioneering study of the Kamigata (Osaka) rakugo tradition presents the first complete English translation of five classic rakugo stories, and offers a history of comic storytelling in Kamigata (modern Kansai, Kinki) from the seventeenth century to the present day. Considering the art in terms of gender, literature, performance, and society, this volume grounds Kamigata rakugo in its distinct cultural context and sheds light on the 'other' rakugo for students and scholars of Japanese culture and history.

The Unauthorized X-Men: SF And Comic Writers on Mutants, Prejudice, And Adamantium (Smart Pop) By Len Wein (editor), Leah Wilson (editor)
2006 | 215 Pages | ISBN: 1932100741 | PDF | 2 MB
Comic writers trace the X-Men series' evolution, challenge its metaphors, and draw from its truths about human nature and human society in this exploratory look at the still-timely and often-revamped classic. With chapters such as Magneto the Jew, The New Mutants and the Corruption of the Teenager, and The Sexuality of X-Men, the contributors highlight the strange ties between the characters and current society. From mutant subcultures in the real world to the reality of racism and heterosexism not so different from that of the world of the X-Men, this book takes on the intersection between fiction and truth in a manner perfect for long-time comic readers, cartoon fans, and Johnny-come-lately moviegoers.

Despite the growing importance of heroines across literary culture-and sales figures that demonstrate both young adult and adult females are reading about heroines in droves, particularly in graphic novels, comic books, and YA literature-few scholarly collections have examined the complex relationships between the representations of heroines and the changing societal roles for both women and men.
