E-BooksBetween Slavery and Freedom Free People of Color in America From Settlement to the Civil War

Between Slavery and Freedom Free People of Color in America From Settlement to the Civil War
Jacqueline M. Moore, Nina Mjagkij, "Between Slavery and Freedom: Free People of Color in America From Settlement to the Civil War"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 1442262249, 0742551148 | EPUB | pages: 186 | 3.0 mb
In Between Slavery and Freedom, Julie Winch explores the complex world of those people of African birth or descent who occupied the "borderlands" between slavery and freedom in the 350 years from the founding of the first European colonies in what is today the United States to the start of the Civil War. However they had navigated their way out of bondage - through flight, through military service, through self-purchase, through the working of the law in different times and in different places, or because they were the offspring of parents who were themselves free - they were determined to enjoy the same rights and liberties that white people enjoyed. In a concise narrative and selected primary documents, noted historian Julie Winch shows the struggle of black people to gain and maintain their liberty and lay claim to freedom in its fullest sense. Refusing to be relegated to the margins of American society and languish in poverty and ignorance, they repeatedly challenged their white neighbors to live up to the promises of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. Winch's accessible, concise, and jargon-free book, including primary sources and the latest scholarship, will benefit undergraduate students of American history and general readers alike by allowing them to judge the evidence for themselves and evaluate the authors' conclusions.

E-BooksShades of Difference Mythologies of Skin Color in Early Modern England

Shades of Difference Mythologies of Skin Color in Early Modern England
Shades of Difference: Mythologies of Skin Color in Early Modern England By Sujata Iyengar
2005 | 310 Pages | ISBN: 081223832X | PDF | 17 MB
Was there such a thing as a modern notion of race in the English Renaissance, and, if so, was skin color its necessary marker? In fact, early modern texts described human beings of various national origins--including English--as turning white, brown, tawny, black, green, or red for any number of reasons, from the effects of the sun's rays or imbalance of the bodily humors to sexual desire or the application of makeup. It is in this cultural environment that the seventeenth-century London Gazette used the term black to describe both dark-skinned African runaways and dark-haired Britons, such as Scots, who are now unquestioningly conceived of as white. In Shades of Difference, Sujata Iyengar explores the cultural mythologies of skin color in a period during which colonial expansion and the slave trade introduced Britons to more dark-skinned persons than at any other time in their history. Looking to texts as divergent as sixteenth-century Elizabethan erotic verse, seventeenth-century lyrics, and Restoration prose romances, Iyengar considers the construction of race during the early modern period without oversimplifying the emergence of race as a color-coded classification or a black/white opposition. Rather, race, embodiment, and skin color are examined in their multiple contexts--historical, geographical, and literary. Iyengar engages works that have not previously been incorporated into discussions of the formation of race, such as Marlowe's Hero and Leander and Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis. By rethinking the emerging early modern connections between the notions of race, skin color, and gender, Shades of Difference furthers an ongoing discussion with originality and impeccable scholarship.

E-BooksJourneys of Social Justice Women of Color Presidents in the Academy

Journeys of Social Justice Women of Color Presidents in the Academy
Journeys of Social Justice: Women of Color Presidents in the Academy By Menah Pratt-Clarke (editor), Johanna B. Maes (editor)
2017 | 220 Pages | ISBN: 1433131838 | PDF | 6 MB
This edited volume documents the unique experiences of women of color in higher education administration. From full professors, senior administrators, deans, presidents, and chancellors, women of color share their social justice journeys to leadership roles in the academy. With a focus on women of color presidents, a rich landscape is painted through their own voices of their experiences as they ascend and lead higher education institutions, navigating complex dynamics influenced by their race, culture, class, and gender status. The narratives of African American, Native American, Asian American, Mexican American, and Puerto Rican women leaders reflect the importance of their cultural heritage; the role of family values; the necessity of professional mentorship and support; the presence of personal resiliency; and the need to lift others while climbing and thriving. This book affirms the social justice imperative of diversifying the academy to include the scholarship, voices, perspectives, viewpoints, and leadership of women of color. Through this work, we clearly see that women of color can climb to the highest rung; can penetrate the abode ceiling, the bamboo ceiling, and the plantation roofs; can sit in the president's chair; and can thrive as leaders in the academy. This volume can be used in higher education, gender and women's studies, leadership, and sociology courses on education and identity.
