E-BooksThe Oxford Handbook of Late Colonial Insurgencies and Counter–Insurgencies

The Oxford Handbook of Late Colonial Insurgencies and Counter–Insurgencies
Free Download Martin Thomas, "The Oxford Handbook of Late Colonial Insurgencies and Counter-Insurgencies "
English | ISBN: 019886678X | 2024 | 768 pages | EPUB, PDF | 3 MB + 43 MB
The lethality of conflicts between insurgent groups and counter-insurgent security forces has risen markedly since the Second World War just as those of conventional, or inter-state wars have declined. For several decades, conflicts within states rather than between them have been the prevalent form of organised political violence worldwide. Recent conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria have fired interest in colonial experiences of rebellion, while current western interventions in sub-Saharan Africa have prompted accusations of 'militarist humanitarianism'. Yet, despite mounting interest in counter-insurgency and empire, comparative investigation of colonial responses to insurrection and civil disorder is sparse. Some scholars have written of a 'golden age of counter-insurgency', which began with Britain's declaration of a Malayan Emergency in 1948 and ended with the withdrawal of US ground troops from Vietnam in 1973. It is with this period, if not with any presumed 'golden age' that this volume is concerned. This Handbook connects ideas about contested decolonization and the insurgencies that inspired it with an analysis of patterns and singularities in the conflicts that precipitated the collapse of overseas empires. It attempts a systematic study of the global effects of organized anti-colonial violence in Asia and Africa. The objective is to reconceptualize late colonial violence in the European overseas empires by exploring its distinctive character and the globalizing processes underpinning it.

E-BooksThe Illusion of the Post–Colonial State Governance and Security Challenges in Africa

The Illusion of the Post–Colonial State Governance and Security Challenges in Africa
Free Download W. Alade Fawole, "The Illusion of the Post-Colonial State: Governance and Security Challenges in Africa "
English | ISBN: 1498564607 | 2018 | 254 pages | EPUB | 967 KB
This book challenges the long-held conventional wisdom that Africa is a post-colonial society of sovereign nation-states despite the outward attributes of statehood: demarcated territories, permanent populations, governments, national currencies, police, and armed forces. While it is true that African nation-states have been gifted flag independence by their respective colonial masters, few have reached fully developed status as a secure nation-state. Most African nation-states have, since independence, been grappling with the crisis of state-building, nation-building, governance, and myriad security challenges which have been chronically exacerbated by the dynamics of the post-Cold War era. To focus merely on the agency of the African political elite and their inability to sustain functional modern nation-states misses the point. The central argument of the book is that an understanding of Africa's contemporary governance and security challenges requires us to historicize the discourse surrounding nation-building and state-building throughout Africa.

E-BooksSectarian Order in Bahrain The Social and Colonial Origins of Criminal Justice

Sectarian Order in Bahrain The Social and Colonial Origins of Criminal Justice
Free Download Staci Strobl, "Sectarian Order in Bahrain: The Social and Colonial Origins of Criminal Justice"
English | ISBN: 1498541607 | 2018 | 192 pages | EPUB | 1481 KB
Sectarian Order in Bahrain connects the rise of colonial criminal justice in Bahrain and sectarianism, making detailed use of an archival cache of colonial criminal court cases in the British Library, and offering a critical analysis. Using primary and secondary historical documents, including ethnographic and anthropological accounts, the book links major themes in critical and cultural criminology, southern criminology, historical sociology, post-colonialism, and Gulf studies which have not been adequately examined together. It drills down on an important group of surviving criminal court case files, and shows how they can describe the problem of and inform solutions to sectarian discrimination in Bahrain. There are two major shifts in notions of the social order and order maintenance that characterize the 20th century, highlighting a sectarianism modus operandi within the colonial criminal justice system. The shifts are the criminalization of inter-tribal competition and honor-based modes of behavior in order to prevent intra-Sunni contestation and to unite Sunnis under Al-Khalifah and colonial authority; and the invention of indigenous Shi'a and Persian Bahrainis as a criminal class as an extension of the sectarianism long practiced by the Al Khalifah (and other Sunni tribes). Together these two shifts birth a modern criminal justice system that institutionalizes Sunni chauvinism and Shi'a discrimination, problems evident in the Bahraini criminal justice system today.

E-BooksMusic in Colonial Punjab Courtesans, Bards, and Connoisseurs, 1800–1947

Music in Colonial Punjab Courtesans, Bards, and Connoisseurs, 1800–1947
Free Download Dr Radha Kapuria, "Music in Colonial Punjab: Courtesans, Bards, and Connoisseurs, 1800-1947"
English | ISBN: 0192867342 | 2023 | 410 pages | PDF | 62 MB
This book offers the first social history of music in undivided Punjab (1800-1947), beginning at the Lahore court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and concluding at the Patiala royal darbar. It unearths new evidence for the centrality of female performers and classical music in a region primarily viewed as a folk music centre, featuring a range of musicians and dancers -from 'mirasis' (bards) and 'kalawants' (elite musicians), to 'kanjris' (subaltern female performers) and 'tawaifs' (courtesans). A central theme is the rise of new musical publics shaped by the anglicized Punjabi middle classes, and British colonialists' response to Punjab's performing communities. The book reveals a diverse connoisseurship for music with insights from history, ethnomusicology, and geography on an activity that still unites a region now divided between India and Pakistan.

E-BooksLiberalism and Colonial Violence

Liberalism and Colonial Violence
Free Download Hellena Moon, "Liberalism and Colonial Violence"
English | ISBN: 1725252678 | 2023 | 260 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This book explores the aporias of liberal democracy, freedom, care, and justice-with the seemingly at-odds ideas of neoliberal fascism, racism, sexism, and other forms of violence. As Derrick Bell and others have argued that racism is inherent in US democracy, I examine the intertwined concepts of justice and freedom with fascist ideas that unsettle democratic practices of freedom and political equality. There is ongoing tension that uproots democratic practices driven by the very ideals of democracy itself. Freedom is acquired for one group while circumscribing it for others. In analyzing the troubling neoliberal fascist leanings of our times, I explore the origins of US liberalism to diagnose our current state of politico-theological abyss. In that regard, our own field of pastoral care needs to address its complicity in the current devolving situation of the neoliberal fascist ideologies in US society. Fascist and nationalist ideologies rely foremost on perpetuating mythic ideologies, masking reality, and controlling our epistemologies. In charting a new genealogy for spiritual care, I argue that the image of care as articulated by W. E. B. DuBois-one of Third World liberation that addresses the decoloniality of the entombed soul-should be the primary genealogy of spiritual care for our field today.

E-BooksGender, Madness, and Colonial Paranoia in Australian Literature Australian Psychoses

Gender, Madness, and Colonial Paranoia in Australian Literature Australian Psychoses
Free Download Laura Deane, "Gender, Madness, and Colonial Paranoia in Australian Literature: Australian Psychoses"
English | ISBN: 149854732X | 2017 | 214 pages | EPUB | 1341 KB
This book offers an original and compelling analysis of women's madness, gender and the Australian family. Taking up Anne McClintock's call for critical works that psychoanalyze colonialism, this radical re-assessment of novels by Christina Stead and Kate Grenville provides a sustained account of women's madness and masculine colonial psychosis from a feminist postcolonial perspective. This book rethinks women's madness in the context of Australian colonialism. Taking novels of madness by Christina Stead and Kate Grenville as its point of critical departure, it applies a post-Reconciliation lens to the study of Australia's gender and racial codes, to place Australian sexism and misogyny in their proper colonial context. Employing madness as a frame to rethink postcolonial theorizing in Australia, Gender, Madness, and Colonial Paranoia in Australian Literature psychoanalyses colonialism to argue that Australia suffers from a cultural pathology based in the strategic forgetting of colonial violence. This pathology takes the form of colonial paranoia about 'race' and gender, producing distorted gender codes and ways of being Australian. This book maps the contours of Australian colonial paranoia, weaving feminist literary theory, psychoanalysis and postcolonial theory with poststructuralist approaches to reassess the traditional canon of critical madness scholarship, and the place of women's writing within it. This provocative work marks a radical departure from much recent feminist, cultural, and postcolonial criticism, and will be essential reading for students of Australian literature, cultural studies and gender studies wanting a new insight into how the Australian psyche is shaped by settler colonialism.

E-BooksFilming Modernity and Islam in Colonial Egypt

Filming Modernity and Islam in Colonial Egypt
Free Download Heba Arafa Abdelfattah, "Filming Modernity and Islam in Colonial Egypt"
English | ISBN: 139952075X | 2023 | 488 pages | PDF | 31 MB
This book studies the rise of cinema in colonial Egypt as a supplemental secular public sphere that is not anti-religion. To this end, it investigates the reception of film by three centers of powers: the colonial authorities, the Muslim clergy, and the Cairene bourgeoisie. It inquires about the representations of modernity in films produced during the time and the place filmmakers assigned to Islam in these representations. The result is a story of survival and coexistence told through the lens of cinema as modern art and popular culture negotiating its overt and covert censorship in the public sphere, despite colonization and war.

E-BooksCyprus under British Colonial Rule Culture, Politics, and the Movement toward Union with Greece, 1878–1954

Cyprus under British Colonial Rule Culture, Politics, and the Movement toward Union with Greece, 1878–1954
Free Download Christos P. Ioannides, "Cyprus under British Colonial Rule: Culture, Politics, and the Movement toward Union with Greece, 1878-1954"
English | ISBN: 1498582028 | 2019 | 340 pages | EPUB | 531 KB
This is a unique book that combines a political narrative with poetry to examine the role of culture and the fusion of religion and politics during the struggle against colonialism. The context is Britain's geopolitical interests in the Middle East. The author utilizes a vital cultural source echoing the authentic voice of the people, Cypriot folk poems, which has remained virtually unknown to the English reader until now. Translated into English, they are interwoven into the book's narrative to reflect the yearning for social justice and the political sentiments of the vast majority of the population, the peasants, in a rural society. Lawrence Durrell's literary masterpiece, Bitter Lemons, his politico-cultural chronicle on British-ruled Cyprus, is also discussed critically. The Greek Orthodox Church led the anti-colonial movement revolving around union with Greece. Through his intimate knowledge of Greek Orthodox practices, the author elucidates how religious customs and rituals were intertwined with the nationalist ideology to lead to political mobilization. In the process, culture, with its religious underpinnings, shaped politics. This dynamic has been the case from the Middle East, Turkey and North Africa, to Eurasia and South East Asia. Prime examples are the Iranian revolution and the more recent Arab Spring, both of which caught the West by surprise. In Cyprus, the British, with their sense of superiority, remained alien to the local culture and discounted popular sentiment. The two rebellions that ensued caught Britain totally by surprise. This is a valuable case study on the convergence of religion and politics. Academics, students and non-specialists will find a captivating narrative on Britain's colonial encounter in an idyllic but strategic island in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Mandatory Madness Colonial Psychiatry and Mental Illness in British Mandate Palestine
Free Download Mandatory Madness: Colonial Psychiatry and Mental Illness in British Mandate Palestine
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1009430378 | 361 Pages | PDF | 3.4 MB
Mandatory Madness offers a fresh new perspective on a pivotal period in the history of modern Palestine, by putting mental illness and the psychiatric encounters it engendered at the heart of the story. Through a careful and creative reading of a wide range of archival and published material in English, Arabic, and Hebrew, Chris Sandal-Wilson reveals how a range of actors responded to mental illness in the decades before 1948. Rather than a concern of European Jewish psychiatric experts alone, questions around the causes, nature, and treatment of mental illness were negotiated across diverse and sometimes surprising sites in mandate Palestine. Bringing together histories of medicine, colonialism, and the modern Middle East, Mandatory Madness highlights how the seemingly personal and private matter of mental illness generated distinctive forms of entanglement: between colonial state and society, Arabs and Jews, and Palestine and the wider region.
