E-BooksTouraj Kiaras and Persian Classical Music An Analytical Perspective

Touraj Kiaras and Persian Classical Music An Analytical Perspective
Free Download Touraj Kiaras and Persian Classical Music: An Analytical Perspective By Owen Wright
2009 | 148 Pages | ISBN: 0754663280 | PDF | 5 MB
In this book Owen Wright analyses a single recording of classical Persian music made by Touraj Kiaras, a distinguished singer, accompanied by four noted instrumentalists. The format of the recording is typical of a public concert performance, and thus includes instrumental compositions as well as a central exploration of vocal repertoire and technique. The analysis identifies salient structural features, whether of the individual components or of the whole, in a way accessible to the western reader, but it also takes account of the analytical metalanguage used in Persian scholarship, and includes consideration of the relationship between music and poetry. It is important to note that it is also guided by the perceptions of the performer, whose input and responses to questions have significantly influenced the enterprise. To avoid the dryly impersonal, the analysis is also framed by an introduction which combines a biographical sketch of Touraj Kiaras with a survey of the twentieth-century evolution of Persian classical music and of the position of the vocal repertoire within it, and by an epilogue which examines further the ideological basis of prevalent attitudes to music, and seeks to explore the validity of the analytical enterprise within this context.

E-BooksGender, Affect, and Emotion from Classical to Early Modern Literature

Gender, Affect, and Emotion from Classical to Early Modern Literature
Free Download Gender, Affect, and Emotion from Classical to Early Modern Literature: Afterlives of the Nightingale's Song
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031277201 | 472 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 3 MB
Drawing both on historical accounts of the emotions and on contemporary affect theory, this book explores the intersection of social constructions of sex and gender with the development of norms for emotive speech in literary texts from the classical to the early modern periods. More specifically, the book argues that the influential Stoic theory of the prepassions (as distinct from the passions proper) resonates richly with recent work on affect, emphasizing in similar ways the role of embodied feelings that may exceed available linguistic norms as well as challenging gendered emotion scripts. From the tragic Stoicism of Virgil's Aeneid to Chaucer's Stoic-Petrarchan Griselda and the Stoic-inflected attitudes reflected in the work of seventeenth century poet Mary Carey, the Stoic view of the emotions as test-cases for a moralized conception of masculine coherence conflicts with a fluid affective model of feeling that challenges the ideal of emotional self-containment.

E-BooksClassical Tessellations and Three–Manifolds

Classical Tessellations and Three–Manifolds
Free Download Classical Tessellations and Three-Manifolds by José María Montesinos-Amilibia
English | PDF | 1987 | 248 Pages | ISBN : 3540152911 | 13.7 MB
This unusual book, richly illustrated with 29 colour illustrations and about 200 line drawings, explores the relationship between classical tessellations and three-manifolds. In his original and entertaining style, the author provides graduate students with a source of geometrical insight into low-dimensional topology. Researchers in this field will find here an account of a theory that is on the one hand known to them but here is "clothed in a different garb" and can be used as a source for seminars on low-dimensional topology, or for preparing independent study projects for students, or again as the basis of a reading course.

E-BooksClassical Nonintegrability, Quantum Chaos

Classical Nonintegrability, Quantum Chaos
Free Download Classical Nonintegrability, Quantum Chaos by Andreas Knauf , Yakov G. Sinai , Viviane Baladi
English | PDF | 1997 | 104 Pages | ISBN : 3764357088 | 7.6 MB
Our DMV Seminar on 'Classical Nonintegrability, Quantum Chaos' intended to introduce students and beginning researchers to the techniques applied in nonin tegrable classical and quantum dynamics. Several of these lectures are collected in this volume. The basic phenomenon of nonlinear dynamics is mixing in phase space, lead ing to a positive dynamical entropy and a loss of information about the initial state. The nonlinear motion in phase space gives rise to a linear action on phase space functions which in the case of iterated maps is given by a so-called transfer operator. Good mixing rates lead to a spectral gap for this operator.

E-BooksClassical Approaches to the Study of Religion Aims, Methods, and Theories of Research. Introduction and Anthology

Classical Approaches to the Study of Religion Aims, Methods, and Theories of Research. Introduction and Anthology
Free Download Jacques Waardenburg, Russell T. McCutcheon, "Classical Approaches to the Study of Religion: Aims, Methods, and Theories of Research. Introduction and Anthology"
English | 2017 | pages: 751 | ISBN: 3110469529 | EPUB | 5,8 mb
Waardenburg's magisterial essay traces the rise and development of the academic study of religion from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, outlining the establishment of the discipline, its connections with other fields, religion as a subject of research, and perspectives on a phenomenological study of religion. Futhermore a second part comprises an anthology of texts from 41 scholars whose work was programmatic in the evolution of the academic study of religion. Each chapter presents a particular approach, theory, and method relevant to the study of religion. The pieces selected for this volume were taken from the discipline of religious studies as well as from related fields, such as anthropology, sociology, and psychology, to name a few.

The City in Arabic Literature Classical and Modern Perspectives
Free Download Nizar F. Hermes, "The City in Arabic Literature: Classical and Modern Perspectives"
English | ISBN: 1474406521 | 2018 | 360 pages | PDF | 7 MB
The theme and motif of the city has had an enduring presence in the Arabic-Islamic tradition, from the classical and post-classical literary corpus to modern and post-colonial Arabic poetry and prose. Cities such as Mecca, Baghdad, Cairo, Damascus, Beirut, Qayrawan, Marrakesh and Cordoba have served as virtual (battle)grounds for some of the Arab world's most complex intellectual, sociocultural, and political issues. The Arab city has been transformed from a mere physical structure and textual space into an (auto)biographical, novelistic, and poetic arena―often troubled and contested―for debating the encounter, competition and conflict between the rural and the urban, the traditional and the modern, the meditative and the satiric, the individual and the communal, and the Self and Other(s).
