Sustainable Cities Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and the Rise of Green, Cy-phy Cities
Sustainable Cities: Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and the Rise of Green, "Cy-phy" Cities by Claudio Scardovi
English | March 28, 2021 | ISBN: 3030684377 | 231 pages | EPUB | 18 Mb
Global cities are facing an almost unprecedented challenge of change. As they re-emerge from the Covid 19 pandemic and get ready to face climate change and other, potentially existential threats, they need to look for new ways to support wealth and wellbeing creation - leveraging Big Data and AI and suing them into their physical reality and to become greener, more inclusive and resilient, hence sustainable. This book describes how new digital technologies could be used to design digital and physical twins of cities that are able to feed into each other to optimize their working and ability to create new wealth and wellbeing. The book also describes how to increase cities' social and economic resilience during crisis time and addressing their almost fatal weaknesses - as it became all too obvious during the recent COVID 19 crisis. Also, the book presents a framework for a critical discussion of the concept of "smart-city", suggesting its development into a "cyber" and "meta" one - meaning, not only digital systems can allow physical ones (e.g. cities, citizens, households and companies) to become "smarter", but also the vice versa is true, as off line data and real life behaviours can support the optimization and development of virtual brains as a sum of big data and artificial intelligence apps all sitting "over the cloud".

E-BooksSpace and Pluralism Can Contemporary Cities Be Places of Tolerance

Space and Pluralism Can Contemporary Cities Be Places of Tolerance
Stefano Moroni, David Weberman, "Space and Pluralism: Can Contemporary Cities Be Places of Tolerance?"
English | 2016 | pages: 263 | ISBN: 9633861241 | PDF | 7,1 mb
This book addresses the social, functional and symbolic dimensions of urban space in today's world. The twelve essays are grouped in three parts, ranging from a conceptual framework to case descriptions rich with illustrations. They provide a valuable service in exploring the nature and significance of social space and particular aspects of its contemporary distribution and contestation. The book addresses a topic that is intrinsically interdisciplinary. Questions of space are examined from a rich variety of disciplinary perspectives in a welcome range from urban planning to political philosophy, shedding a good deal of light in the process. The issues in focus include the dichotomies of public and private space, discussion of rights and duties with regard to the use of space, or conflicts over its allocation. Well reasoned and presented discussion is offered from the perspective of basic values and rights. The policy issue of institutional recognition of the specifics of (minority community) identity is raised in opposition to abstract distributive accounts of justice.

E-BooksPolicing Cities in Napoleonic Europe (War, Culture and Society, 1750-1850)

Policing Cities in Napoleonic Europe (War, Culture and Society, 1750-1850)
Policing Cities in Napoleonic Europe (War, Culture and Society, 1750-1850)
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031110536 | 400 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 15 MB
This book shows how the police functioned in the cities of the Napoleonic Empire. Shifting attention away from political repression, it focuses on the men who embodied this institution and made it work day-to-day. Based on extensive archival research, the book shows how the Napoleonic police were indeed an instrument of power, but also a profession and a service to the public. Traditionally associated with the image of Joseph Fouché and with political surveillance, the Napoleonic police, when studied from the local level, thus reveals itself to be much more complex and oriented simultaneously towards both the preservation of the regime and maintaining good urban order.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Cities
Andy Merrifield, "What We Talk About When We Talk About Cities"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 1682191435 | PDF | pages: 307 | 3.5 mb
In often dreamlike peregrinations around his home towns of Liverpool, London and New York Andy Merrifield reflects on what cities mean to us and how they shape the way we think. As he wanders, Merrifield's reveries circle questions: Can we talk about cities in the absolute, discovering their essence beneath the particulars? Is it possible truly to love or hate a city, to experience it carnally or viscerally? Might we find true love in the city?

Invisible Cities and the Urban Imagination
"Invisible Cities" and the Urban Imagination
English | 2022 | ISBN: 3031130472 | 355 Pages | PDF (True) | 8 MB
In 1972, Italo Calvino published Invisible Cities, a literary book that masterfully combines philosophy and poetry, rigid structure and free play, theoretical insight and glittering prose. The text is an extended meditation on urban life, and it continues to resonate not only among literary scholars, but among social scientists, architects, and urban planners as well. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Invisible Cities, this collection of essays serves as both an appreciation and a critical engagement. Drawing from a wide array of disciplinary perspectives and geographical contexts, this volume grapples with the theoretical, pedagogical, and political legacies of Calvino's work. Each chapter approaches Invisible Cities not only asa novel but as a work of evocative ethnography, place-writing, and urban theory. Fifty years on, what can Calvino's dreamlike text offer to scholars and practitioners interested in actually existing urban life?
