E-BooksThe Theology of Louis Massignon Islam, Christ, and the Church

The Theology of Louis Massignon Islam, Christ, and the Church
Christian Krokus, "The Theology of Louis Massignon: Islam, Christ, and the Church"
English | ISBN: 0813229464 | 2017 | 272 pages | PDF | 1017 KB
Anticipating the vision of Nostra Aetate, Louis Massignon (1883-1962) imagined and worked toward a revolution in the relationship between Muslims and Christians, from one poisoned by fear and rivalry to one rooted in mutual understanding and fraternal correction. His lifelong study of the Qur'an, Muhammad, Arabic, Sufism, and the Muslim mystic and martyr al-Hallâj (858-922), who was executed by crucifixion for having publicly claimed union with God, grounded Massignon's conviction that there was a Christological nexus between the two religions. His founding of the Badaliya sodality with Mary Kahil (1889-1979) sought to bring Christians and Muslims together in prayer and substitutive love, and his writings and personal contacts helped to form the views of the men who would eventually draft the statements on Muslims at the Second Vatican Council. For all those reasons and more Massignon has been called "the single most influential figure n the 20th century in regard to the Church's relationship with Islam," and his approach has only become more important in the decades since his passing.

E-BooksBrethren in Christ A Calvinist Network in Reformation Europe

Brethren in Christ A Calvinist Network in Reformation Europe
Ole Peter Grell, "Brethren in Christ: A Calvinist Network in Reformation Europe"
English | ISBN: 1107008816 | 2011 | 338 pages | PDF | 13 MB
This groundbreaking book explores the migration of Calvinist refugees in Europe during the Reformation, across a century of persecution, exile and minority existence. Ole Peter Grell follows the fortunes of some of the earliest Reformed merchant families, forced to flee from the Tuscan city of Lucca during the 1560s, through their journey to France during the Wars of Religion to the St Bartholomew Day Massacre and their search for refuge in Sedan. He traces the lives of these interconnected families over three generations as they settled in European cities from Geneva to London, marrying into the diaspora of Reformed merchants. Based on a potent combination of religion, commerce and family networks, these often wealthy merchants and highly skilled craftsmen were amongst the most successful of early modern capitalists. Brethren in Christ shows how this interconnected network, reinforced through marriage and enterprise, forged the backbone of international Calvinism in Reformation Europe.

E-BooksThe Mystical Presence of Christ The Exceptional and the Ordinary in Late Medieval Religion

The Mystical Presence of Christ The Exceptional and the Ordinary in Late Medieval Religion
Richard Kieckhefer, "The Mystical Presence of Christ: The Exceptional and the Ordinary in Late Medieval Religion "
English | ISBN: 1501765116 | 2022 | 382 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The Mystical Presence of Christ investigates the connections between exceptional experiences of Christ's presence and ordinary devotion to Christ in the late medieval West. Unsettling the notion that experiences of seeing Christ's figure or hearing Christ speak are simply exceptional events that happen at singular moments, Richard Kieckhefer reveals the entanglements between these experiences and those that occur through the imagery, language, and rituals of ordinary, everyday devotional culture.
