E-BooksActivating China Local Actors, Foreign Influence, and State Response

Activating China Local Actors, Foreign Influence, and State Response
Activating China: Local Actors, Foreign Influence, and State Response by Setsuko Matsuzawa
English | Jan 21, 2019 | ISBN: 0815360347, 0367581957 | 182 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book examines the effects of the transnational social and environmental advocacy of foreign NGOs in China. Based on three case studies, including China's first participatory development project, its first successful case of transnational anti-dam activism, and its first national park project, the book challenges our typical understanding that global forces shape local outcomes. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in China and archival work in the United States, Matsuzawa sheds light on the entrepreneurial behaviors of Chinese activists, researchers, and government officials. She shows that global projects are often substantially transformed by local actors, despite the original intentions of their foreign collaborators and even China's central government. Thus, it is argued that foreign NGOs are not as hegemonic or culturally imperialistic as is commonly viewed. Matsuzawa reveals that their goals may change profoundly as a result of their engagements with local actors on the ground. She offers a new theory of transnational advocacy together with an account of the Chinese party-state's rising concerns over the influence of foreign NGOs. Activating China will be of interest to sociologists and political scientists working in the fields of social movement studies and activism in China.

Sidewinder Creative Missile Development at China Lake
Sidewinder: Creative Missile Development at China Lake by Ron Westrum
English | August 15, 2013 | ISBN: 1591149819, 1557509514 | EPUB | 352 pages | 2.3 MB
In the mid-1950s a small group of overworked, underpaid scientists and engineers on a remote base in the Mojave Desert developed a weapon no one had asked for but everyone was looking for. This is the story of how that unorthodox team, led by visionary Bill McLean, overcame Navy bureaucracy and other more heavily funded projects to develop the world's best air-to-air missile. Author Ron Westrum examines that special time and place-when the old American work ethic and "can do" spirit were a vital part of U.S. weapons development-to discover how the dedicated team was able to create a simple and inexpensive missile. Today, some forty-four years after its invention, Sidewinder is still considered the best America has.

E-BooksContract and Property in Early Modern China

Contract and Property in Early Modern China
Contract and Property in Early Modern China By Madeleine Zelin, Jonathan K. Ocko, Robert Gardella
2004 | 401 Pages | ISBN: 0804746397 | PDF | 5 MB
The role of contract in early modern Chinese economic life, when acknowledged at all, is usually presented as a minor one. This volume demonstrates that contract actually played a critical role in the everyday structure of many kinds of relationships and transactions; contracts are, moreover, of enormous value to present-day scholars as transcriptions of the fine details of day-to-day economic activity.Offering a new perspective on economic and legal institutions, particularly the closely related institutions of contract and property, in Qing and Republican China, the papers in this volume spell out how these institutions worked in specific social contexts. Drawing on recent research in far-flung archives, the contributors take as givens both the embeddedness of contract in Chinese social and economic discourse and its role in the spread of commodification. Two papers deal with broad issues: Zelin's argues for a distinctively Chinese heritage of strong property rights, and Ocko's examines the usefulness of American legal scholarship as a comparative analytic framework.
