E-BooksThe Health Gap The Challenge of an Unequal World

The Health Gap The Challenge of an Unequal World
The Health Gap: The Challenge of an Unequal World By Michael Marmot
2015 | 400 Pages | ISBN: 1632860783 | EPUB | 3 MB
In this groundbreaking book, Michael Marmot, president of the World Medical Association, reveals social injustice to be the greatest threat to global healthIn Baltimore's inner-city neighborhood of Upton/Druid Heights, a man's life expectancy is sixty-three; not far away, in the Greater Roland Park/Poplar neighborhood, life expectancy is eighty-three. The same twenty-year avoidable disparity exists in the Calton and Lenzie neighborhoods of Glasgow, and in other cities around the world. In Sierra Leone, one in 21 fifteen-year-old women will die in her fertile years of a maternal-related cause; in Italy, the figure is one in 17,100; but in the United States, which spends more on healthcare than any other country in the world, it is one in 1,800. Why?Dramatic differences in health are not a simple matter of rich and poor; poverty alone doesn't drive ill health, but inequality does. Indeed, suicide, heart disease, lung disease, obesity, and diabetes, for example, are all linked to social disadvantage. In every country, people at relative social disadvantage suffer health disadvantage and shorter lives. Within countries, the higher the social status of individuals, the better their health. These health inequalities defy the usual explanations. Conventional approaches to improving health have emphasized access to technical solutions and changes in the behavior of individuals, but these methods only go so far. What really makes a difference is creating the conditions for people to have control over their lives, to have the power to live as they want. Empowerment is the key to reducing health inequality and thereby improving the health of everyone. Marmot emphasizes that the rate of illness of a society as a whole determines how well it functions; the greater the health inequity, the greater the dysfunction.Marmot underscores that we have the tools and resources materially to improve levels of health for individuals and societies around the world, and that to not do so would be a form of injustice. Citing powerful examples and startling statistics ("young men in the U.S. have less chance of surviving to sixty than young men in forty-nine other countries"), The Health Gap presents compelling evidence for a radical change in the way we think about health and indeed society, and inspires us to address the societal imbalances in power, money, and resources that work against health equity.

Develop and expand your innate leadership abilities through daily exercises and challenges designed to help you grow into the leader you want to be and prepare you or the job you were made to have. A recent Harvard Business Review article outlining a study of more than 17,000 leaders found that although on average people begin to supervise others at age 30, most do not start to receive formal leadership training until their 40s.
Don't wait for training that doesn't come until it's too late. The Five-Week Leadership Challenge is an invaluable guide to help any aspiring leader begin a daily practice of exercises and challenges designed to develop and expand your innate leadership ability as quickly as possible. E-BooksFrom Multiculturalism to Democratic Discrimination The Challenge of Islam and the Re-emergence of Europe's Nationalism

From Multiculturalism to Democratic Discrimination The Challenge of Islam and the Re-emergence of Europe's Nationalism
Alberto Spektorowski, "From Multiculturalism to Democratic Discrimination: The Challenge of Islam and the Re-emergence of Europe's Nationalism"
English | ISBN: 0472132164 | 2020 | 494 pages | PDF | 5 MB
The effect of Islam on Western Europe has been profound. Spektorowski and Elfersy argue that it has transformed European democratic values by inspiring an ultra-liberalism that now faces an ultra-conservative backlash. Questions of what to do about Muslim immigration, how to deal with burqas, how to deal with gender politics, have all been influenced by western democracies' grappling with ideas of inclusion and most recently, exclusion. This book examines those forces and ultimately sees, not an unbridgeable gap, but a future in which Islam and European democracies are compatible, rich, and evolving.

E-BooksBeyond White Guilt The Real Challenge for Black-White Relations in Australia

Beyond White Guilt The Real Challenge for Black-White Relations in Australia
Beyond White Guilt: The Real Challenge for Black-White Relations in Australia By Sarah Maddison
2011 | 259 Pages | ISBN: 1742373283 | PDF | 1 MB
A deeply provocative call for white Australians to take personal responsibility for the ongoing impact of colonisation on Aboriginal Australians. Sarah Maddison's bold and original take on the running sore of black-white relations offers a genuinely constructive alternative when so many other approaches have failed.'This book lays out the way modern Australia can right the wrongs that have occurred in the intervening years, and decades, and centuries that have passed since that first dramatic encounter.' - From the foreword by The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG'An excellent diagnosis of Australia's mind-set.' - Jeff McMullen journalist, author, film makerDeep in our hearts, Australians know that our nation was built on land that does not belong to us. Some of us now assert that Aboriginal people should simply take advantage of opportunities offered by white society. But many others feel guilt, often turning this guilt inwards, feeling helpless in the face of the appalling conditions in which many of the original inhabitants of this country now live. Successive government policies of obliteration, assimilation, cultural maintenance and intervention have manifestly failed to bridge the gulf between black and white Australians, and to improve the lives of many Aboriginal Australians. Efforts at reconciliation have stalled. In many ways, we are stuck.Sarah Maddison argues that there is no point in looking again to governments for a solution to these challenges. Rather, it is up to us, all of us. We need to acknowledge our collective responsibility, change at a deep level, and develop a revitalised view of our national self. Only then will we develop policies and practical solutions that work.

E-BooksInorganic Chemistry Knowledge Challenge 2190 Useful Compounds and Mixtures

Inorganic Chemistry Knowledge Challenge 2190 Useful Compounds and Mixtures
English | 2021 | ASIN : B09C9R8WPS | 432 pages | PDF, AZW3, EPUB, MOBI | 4.21 MB
Half a million inorganic compounds have been synthesized in a laboratory. This is about 1/40 the number of organic compounds prepared. The relatively low number of known inorganic compounds points to the fact that polymerization has not inflated the count of these materials to the same extent as it has for organics; in addition, the relative scarcity of most elements that are not found plentifully on earth further reduces the total number.
However, this definitely does not mean that the usefulness of inorganic compounds is limited. On the contrary, they form the bedrock of crucial metallurgical and chemical engineering processes, and metallic reagents are also very useful in organic chemistry reactions.
