E-BooksBoardwalk Empire The Birth, High Times and the Corruption of Atlantic City

Boardwalk Empire The Birth, High Times and the Corruption of Atlantic City
Johnson, Nucky, Nelson, "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and the Corruption of Atlantic City"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 0091941326 | EPUB | pages: 304 | 1.4 mb
"When I was first approached by HBO to use Nelson Johnson's book as the basis for a TV series, my biggest challenge was choosing a time period in which to set it...Ultimately I settled on the 1920s of Atlantic City's legendary treasurer Nucky Johnson...A place of spectacle, shady politics, fast women and backroom deals". (Terence Winter, Emmy Award-winning writer of "The Sopranos" and Executive Producer of Boardwalk Empire). From its humble beginnings as a fledgling seaside resort, Atlantic City grew to be America's playground - loud, brash, and dedicated to the pursuit of pleasure. In 1920 alcohol was banned across the States under Prohibition, yet, thanks to racketeers and corrupt politicians, the liquor in Atlantic City never stopped flowing. As the brothels, bars and gambling rooms flourished, the reputation of both the city itself and its most famous resident grew. Enoch 'Nucky' Johnson was a powerful political force and leading figure in organised crime. His corrupt alliance created a city where the rules just didn't apply, the dollar ruled and the law could be bought. The book that inspired the HBO series, "Boardwalk Empire" brings to life Nucky and the whole cast of his shady associates. Recounting the life of this fascinating city and its most colourful residents, it's a brilliantly told story of a city built on cards and dice, booze and broads.

E-BooksLincoln's Unfinished Work The New Birth of Freedom from Generation to Generation

Lincoln's Unfinished Work The New Birth of Freedom from Generation to Generation
Orville Vernon Burton, "Lincoln's Unfinished Work: The New Birth of Freedom from Generation to Generation "
English | ISBN: 0807176761 | 2022 | 448 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
In his Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln promised that the nation's sacrifices during the Civil War would lead to a "new birth of freedom." Lincoln's Unfinished Work analyzes how the United States has attempted to realize―or subvert―that promise over the past century and a half. The volume is not solely about Lincoln, or the immediate unfinished work of Reconstruction, or the broader unfinished work of America coming to terms with its tangled history of race; it investigates all three topics.

E-BooksThis Violent Empire The Birth of an American National Identity

This Violent Empire The Birth of an American National Identity
This Violent Empire: The Birth of an American National Identity By Carroll Smith-Rosenberg
2010 | 512 Pages | ISBN: 0807832960 | PDF | 4 MB
This Violent Empire traces the origins of American violence, racism, and paranoia to the founding moments of the new nation and the initial instability of Americans' national sense of self.Fusing cultural and political analyses to create a new form of political history, Carroll Smith-Rosenberg explores the ways the founding generation, lacking a common history, governmental infrastructures, and shared culture, solidified their national sense of self by imagining a series of Others (African Americans, Native Americans, women, the propertyless) whose differences from European American male founders overshadowed the differences that divided those founders. These Others, dangerous and polluting, had to be excluded from the European American body politic. Feared, but also desired, they refused to be marginalized, incurring increasingly enraged enactments of their political and social exclusion that shaped our long history of racism, xenophobia, and sexism. Close readings of political rhetoric during the Constitutional debates reveal the genesis of this long history.

E-BooksSupporting Physiological Birth Choices in Midwifery Practice

Supporting Physiological Birth Choices in Midwifery Practice
Supporting Physiological Birth Choices in Midwifery Practice: The Role of Workplace Culture, Politics and Ethics
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1032208279 | 179 Pages | PDF (True) | 2 MB
This book investigates the processes, experiences and sociocultural-political influences upon midwives who support women's alternative birthing choice and argues for a shift in perspective from notions of an individual's professional responsibility to deliver woman-centred care, to a broader, collective responsibility. The book begins by contextualising the importance of quality midwifery care with an exploration of the current debates to demonstrate how hegemonic birth discourse and maternity practices have detrimentally affected physiological birth rates, and the wellbeing of women who opt outside of maternity guidelines. It provides real life examples of how midwives can facilitate a range of birthing decisions within mainstream midwifery services. Moreover, an exploration of midwives' experiences of delivering such care is presented, revealing deeply polarised accounts from moral injury to job fulfilment. The polarised accounts are then presented within a new model to explore how a midwife's socio-political working context can significantly mediate or exacerbate the vulnerability, conflict and stigmatisation that they may experience as a result of supporting alternative birth choices. Finally, this book explores the implications of the findings, looking at how team and organisational culture can be developed to better support women and midwives, making recommendations for a systems approach to improving maternity services.
