E-BooksBrahms Beyond Mastery His Sarabande and Gavotte, and Its Recompositions

Brahms Beyond Mastery His Sarabande and Gavotte, and Its Recompositions
Brahms Beyond Mastery: His Sarabande and Gavotte, and Its Recompositions By Robert Pascall
2013 | 120 Pages | ISBN: 1409465578 | PDF | 7 MB
In 1853 Robert Schumann identified fully-formed compositional mastery in the young Brahms, who nevertheless in the years following embarked on a period of intensive further study, producing, among other works, the neo-baroque Sarabande and Gavotte. These dances have not been properly recognized as constituting a distinct Brahms work before now, but manuscript evidence and their performance history indicate that Brahms and his friends thought of them as such in the mid-1850s, when they became the first music of his performed publicly in Gdansk, Vienna, Budapest and London. He later suppressed the dances, using them instead as a thematic quarry for three chamber music masterpieces, from different stages in his life and in distinctly different ways: the Second String Sextet, the First String Quintet and the Clarinet Quintet. This book gives an account of the compositional and performance history, stylistic features and re-uses of the dances, setting these in the wider context of Brahms's developing creative concerns and trajectory. It constitutes therefore a study of a 'lost' work, of how a fully-formed master opens himself to 'the in-flowing from afar' (in Martin Heidegger's terms), and of the transformative reach and concomitant expressive richness of Brahms's creative thought.

E-BooksBeyond the Soundtrack Representing Music in Cinema

Beyond the Soundtrack Representing Music in Cinema
Beyond the Soundtrack: Representing Music in Cinema By Lawrence Kramer; Daniel Goldmark; Richard D. Leppert
2007 | 333 Pages | ISBN: 0520250699 | PDF | 3 MB
This groundbreaking collection by the most distinguished musicologists and film scholars in their fields gives long overdue recognition to music as equal to the image in shaping the experience of film. Refuting the familiar idea that music serves as an unnoticed prop for narrative, these essays demonstrate that music is a fully imagined and active power in the worlds of film. Even where films do give it a supporting role--and many do much more--music makes an independent contribution. Drawing on recent advances in musicology and cinema studies, Beyond the Soundtrack interprets the cinematic representation of music with unprecedented richness. The authors cover a broad range of narrative films, from the "silent" era (not so silent) to the present.

E-BooksBeyond the Shadow of Camptown Korean Military Brides in America

Beyond the Shadow of Camptown Korean Military Brides in America
Beyond the Shadow of Camptown: Korean Military Brides in America By Ji-Yeon Yuh
2002 | 301 Pages | ISBN: 0814796982 | PDF | 4 MB
Since the beginning of the Korean War in 1950, nearly 100,000 Korean women have immigrated to the United States as the wives of American soldiers. Based on extensive oral interviews and archival research, Beyond the Shadow of the Camptowns tells the stories of these women, from their presumed association with U.S. military camptowns and prostitution to their struggles within the intercultural families they create in the United States.Historian Ji-Yeon Yuh argues that military brides are a unique prism through which to view cultural and social contact between Korea and the U.S. After placing these women within the context of Korean-U.S. relations and the legacies of both Japanese and U.S. colonialism vis á vis military prostitution, Yuh goes on to explore their lives, their coping strategies with their new families, and their relationships with their Korean families and homeland. Topics range from the personal-the role of food in their lives-to the communalthe efforts of military wives to form support groups that enable them to affirm Korean identity that both American and Koreans would deny them.Relayed with warmth and compassion, this is the first in-depth study of Korean military brides, and is a groundbreaking contribution to Asian American, women's, and "new" immigrant studies, while also providing a unique approach to military history.
