E-BooksTongues On Longing and Belonging through Language

Tongues On Longing and Belonging through Language
Tongues: On Longing and Belonging through Language by Ayelet Tsabari
English | October 26, 2021 | ISBN: 1771667141 | 242 pages | EPUB | 1.22 Mb
In this collection of deeply personal essays, twenty-six writers explore their connection with language, accents, and vocabularies, and contend with the ways these can be used as both bridge and weapon. Some explore the way power and privilege affect language learning, especially the shame and exclusion often felt by non-native English speakers in a white, settler, colonial nation. Some confront the pain of losing a mother tongue or an ancestral language along with the loss of community and highlight the empowerment that comes with reclamation. Others celebrate the joys of learning a new language and the power of connection. All underscore how language can offer both transformation and collective healing.

In Search of Belonging Latinas, Media, and Citizenship
In Search of Belonging: Latinas, Media, and Citizenship By Jillian M. Báez
2018 | 202 Pages | ISBN: 0252041798 | PDF | 2 MB
In Search of Belonging explores the ways Latina/o audiences in general, and women in particular, make sense of and engage both mainstream and Spanish-language media. Jillian M. Báez's eye-opening ethnographic analysis draws on the experiences of a diverse group of Latinas in Chicago. In-depth interviews reveal Latinas viewing media images through a lens of citizenship. These women search for nothing less than recognition-and belonging-through representations of Latinas in films, advertising, telenovelas, and TV shows like Ugly Betty and Modern Family. Báez's personal interactions and research merge to create a fascinating portrait, one that privileges the perspectives of the women themselves as they consume media in complex, unpredictable ways. Innovative and informed by a wealth of new evidence, In Search of Belonging answers important questions about the ways Latinas perform citizenship in today's America.

E-BooksThe Somali Within Language, Race and Belonging in Minor Italian Literature

The Somali Within Language, Race and Belonging in Minor Italian Literature
Simone Brioni, "The Somali Within: Language, Race and Belonging in Minor Italian Literature"
English | 2015 | pages: 189 | ISBN: 0367606283, 190966264X | PDF | 7,8 mb
The recent histories of Italy and Somalia are closely linked. Italy colonized Somalia from the end of the 19th century to 1941, and held the territory by UN mandate from 1950 to 1960. Italy is also among the destination countries of the Somali diaspora, which increased in 1991 after civil war. Nonetheless, this colonial and postcolonial cultural encounter has often been neglected. Critically evaluating Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's concept of 'minor literature', as well as drawing on postcolonial literary studies, The Somali Within analyses the processes of linguistic and cultural translation and self-translation, the political engagement with race, gender, class and religious discrimination, and the complex strategies of belonging and unbelonging at work in the literary works in Italian by authors of Somali origins. Brioni proposes that the 'minor' Somali Italian connection might offer a major insight into the transnational dimension of contemporary 'Italian' literature and 'Somali' culture.

E-BooksStaging Citizenship Roma, Performance and Belonging in EU Romania

Staging Citizenship Roma, Performance and Belonging in EU Romania
Staging Citizenship: Roma, Performance and Belonging in EU Romania By Ioana Szeman
2017 | 204 Pages | ISBN: 1785337300 | PDF | 4 MB
Based on over a decade of fieldwork conducted with urban Roma, Staging Citizenship offers a powerful new perspective on one of the European Union's most marginal and disenfranchised communities. Focusing on "performance" broadly conceived, it follows members of a squatter's settlement in Transylvania as they navigate precarious circumstances in a postsocialist state. Through accounts of music and dance performances, media representations, activism, and interactions with both non-governmental organizations and state agencies, author Ioana Szeman grounds broad themes of political economy, citizenship, resistance, and neoliberalism in her subjects' remarkably varied lives and experiences.
