English | 2024 | ISBN: 1009123076 | 225 Pages | PDF | 2 MB
Benford's Law is a probability distribution for the likelihood of the leading digit in a set of numbers. This book seeks to improve and systematize the use of Benford's Law in the social sciences to assess the validity of self-reported data. The authors first introduce a new measure of conformity to the Benford distribution that is created using permutation statistical methods and employs the concept of statistical agreement. In a switch from a typical Benford application, this book moves away from using Benford's Law to test whether the data conform to the Benford distribution, to using it to draw conclusions about the validity of the data. The concept of 'Benford validity' is developed, which indicates whether a dataset is valid based on comparisons with the Benford distribution and, in relation to this, diagnostic procedure that assesses the impact of not having Benford validity on data analysis is devised.

Each day we are exposed to a myriad of natural and human-made chemicals in our food, drinking water, air, soil, at home or at the workplace-pesticide residues, food additives, drugs, household products-but how can we gauge the human health risk posed by these chemicals? Should we believe the somber headlines that depict a serious threat for humans and the environment, or should we follow the reassuring voices of others who claim that the angst is totally unfounded?

E-BooksAssessing the Implicit Personality Through Conditional Reasoning

Assessing the Implicit Personality Through Conditional Reasoning
Assessing the Implicit Personality Through Conditional Reasoning By Lawrence R. James, James M. LeBreton
2011 | 244 Pages | ISBN: 1433810573 | PDF | 2 MB
In this groundbreaking volume, Lawrence R. James and James M. LeBreton introduce a novel conditional reasoning (CR) framework to indirectly assess the implicit personality-the unconscious, inaccessible component of personality that governs much of our behavior but has always been difficult to measure. The authors demonstrate how specific choices on specially constructed inductive reasoning problems positively correlate with the test taker's personality-either prosocial or aggressive-with the latter informed by unconscious negative cognitive biases and salient rationalizations for socially unacceptable aggression, and for achievement motivation and fear of failure. The authors conclude this book by exploring the other inductive reasoning problem content domains of depression, addiction proneness, and "toxic leadership" through CR testing.

E-BooksAssessing Treaty Performance in China Trade and Human Rights

Assessing Treaty Performance in China Trade and Human Rights
Assessing Treaty Performance in China: Trade and Human Rights By Pitman B. Potter
2014 | 309 Pages | ISBN: 0774825596 | PDF | 3 MB
Closer and more frequent contact among states and societies brought about by globalization has led to an increase in trade and human rights disputes that can challenge economic relations and cloud constructive relationships. Preventing these kinds of disputes where possible and managing them when necessary requires a better understanding of the cross-cultural dimensions of treaty performance on trade and human rights.Assessing Treaty Performance in China examines the dynamics of Selective Adaptation and Institutional Capacity as foundations for China's legal performance around international standards on trade and human rights. The paradigm of Selective Adaptation reveals how local interpretation and implementation of international treaty standards are affected by normative perspectives derived from perception, complementarity, and legitimacy. The paradigm of Institute Capacity helps explain how operational dimensions of legal performance are affected by structural and relational dynamics of institutional purpose, location, orientation, and cohesion. These normative and operational perspectives are applied to China's legal performance on trade and human rights issues. For example, China's accession to the WTO is discussed as context for China's emerging legal regimes for contracts and property. This volume outlines a new approach for understanding the treaty performance of an increasingly important actor in the international system. It also offers policy suggestions for more effective engagement with China on trade and human rights issues.

E-BooksAssessing Literacy in a Digital World Validating a Scenario-Based Reading-to-Write Assessment

Assessing Literacy in a Digital World Validating a Scenario-Based Reading-to-Write Assessment
English | 2022 | ISBN: 9811957142 | 195 pages | True PDF EPUB | 15.39 MB
This book illustrates the latest developments in literacy and language assessment in the digital context, and subsequently presents a rigorous validation study on a newly proposed form of assessment (scenario-based assessment, SBA) that seeks to respond to the contextual change of literacy activities. It combines theories and innovative practices in both the literacy and language assessment sectors.
The empirical validation study on SBA, presented here, can help readers understand how digital scenarios can be realized in assessment practices with the aid of computer technology, and how the scenario settings in the digital context can affect EFL learners' reading-to-writing performance. In this way, it can facilitate the reconceptualization of L2 literacy in the digital context. Moreover, the evidence and critical examination presented here can offer readers more comprehensive insights into the value or validity of a given innovative approach before it is adopted in their contexts.
