2020 | 241 Pages | ISBN: 1529205158 | PDF | 2 MB
Leading South Asia expert Bhumitra Chakma explains the politics of regionalism in South Asia and traces the origins and evolution of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) from its inception to the present day. He takes an International Relations perspective and engages three major IR theoretical approaches - neorealism, institutionalism and constructivism - to explain the complex dynamics of South Asian regionalism. Using comparative perspectives based on the experiences of similar regional organizations, the author provides an in-depth analysis of the challenges of cooperation in the region and explores how progress might be made in the future.

Free Download Catherine Manning, "Fortunes à faire: The French in Asian Trade, 1719-48"
English | ISBN: 0860785521 | | 304 pages | PDF | 17 MB
The history of the French in India has received far less scholarly attention than that of other European nations; English historiography, in particular, has often treated it as no more than a preliminary to the extension of British power. In addition, work hitherto has tended to focus on the trade with Europe, not the Asian trade - the 'country trade' carried on within Asia; the full importance of this trade for the Dutch and British is now being recognised. This book represents the first sustained study of French activities in Asian trade, and fills this gap in the historiography. Catherine Manning is concerned to relate the French traders to their social, regional and financial roots, and to trace their connections with other commercial groups in India, both European and Asian. The French evidence that she assembles, including much archival material, also makes a significant contibution to the debate about economic decline and renewal in 18th-century India. Her analysis stresses the importance of the Indian context, and shows that economic and political developments in South India were crucial to the French move from trade to war in the 1740s. Finally the book examines why the French failed in an enterprise which was to succeed so signally for the British only a few decades later.

English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031104242 | 240 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 1.4 MB
This book uncovers the revolutionary journey of British Asian radio broadcasting. It investigates how British Asian radio broadcasting began in England in the 1960s and developed into the 2000s. The book reflects on the existing literature on media and migration, particularly the issues of settlement and race relations, and examines how the BBC and the government took initiative to address these issues. It also critically analyses the need and demand of the Asian community for its own radio platform, discerning the role of the BBC's radio initiatives, as well as other community-oriented radio experiments, in contributing to the creation of independent British Asian radio in England. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in Ethnic and Mother-tongue Radio Broadcasting, Cultural and Communication Studies, Media History and British Cultural History. It will also help broadcasters, media regulators and policy-makers understand the social and cultural context of the communities they address.

Free Download Martial Arts as Embodied Knowledge: Asian Traditions in a Transnational World By D. S. Farrer (editor)
2012 | 264 Pages | ISBN: 1438439660 | PDF | 8 MB
A wide-ranging scholarly consideration of the martial arts. This landmark work provides a wide-ranging scholarly consideration of the traditional Asian martial arts. Most of the contributors to the volume are practitioners of the martial arts, and all are keenly aware that these traditions now exist in a transnational context. The book's cutting-edge research includes ethnography and approaches from film, literature, performance, and theater studies.Three central aspects emerge from this book: martial arts as embodied fantasy, as a culturally embedded form of self-cultivation, and as a continuous process of identity formation. Contributors explore several popular and highbrow cultural considerations, including the career of Bruce Lee, Chinese wuxia films, and Don DeLillo's novel Running Dog. Ethnographies explored describe how the social body trains in martial arts and how martial arts are constructed in transnational training. Ultimately, this academic study of martial arts offers a focal point for new understandings of cultural and social beliefs and of practice and agency."...a significant and very innovative piece of work that is a must read for everyone interested in martial arts studies. Martial Arts as Embodied Knowledge shows that traditional martial arts cannot be studied as static entities; the social, cultural and historical context needs to be taken into consideration ... this book provides insights for further work in several directions ... offers food for deep thought and adds substantially to our understanding of traditional Asian martial arts." - idrottsforum.org"The book successfully demonstrates that martial arts and other traditional art forms are not static entities. Instead they respond to changing environments by a process of constant reinvention." - Thomas A. Green, coeditor of Martial Arts of the World: An Encyclopedia of History and Innovation"Taken together, these essays give a new picture of Asian martial arts as a transnational phenomenon, ranging from Singapore's preservation of Chinese traditions to British adaptation of Indian martial arts for the stage and African usage of Okinawan traditions. Since martial arts are one of the most famous traditions to have originated in Asia, it is useful to see exactly how they are viewed or practiced around the world, from a scholarly perspective." - Margaret B. Wan, author of Green Peony and the Rise of the Chinese Martial Arts Novel

Global Families A History of Asian International Adoption in America
Free Download Catherine Ceniza Choy, "Global Families: A History of Asian International Adoption in America"
English | 2013 | ISBN: 1479892173, 0814717225 | PDF | pages: 244 | 3.2 mb
In the last fifty years, transnational adoption-specifically, the adoption of Asian children-has exploded in popularity as an alternative path to family making. Despite the cultural acceptance of this practice, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the factors that allowed Asian international adoption to flourish. In Global Families, Catherine Ceniza Choy unearths the little-known historical origins of Asian international adoption in the United States. Beginning with the post-World War II presence of the U.S. military in Asia, she reveals how mixed-race children born of Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese women and U.S. servicemen comprised one of the earliest groups of adoptive children.

English in Singapore Modernity and Management (Asian Englishes Today)
Free Download English in Singapore: Modernity and Management (Asian Englishes Today) By Lisa Lim (editor), Anne Pakir (editor), Lionel Wee (editor)
2010 | 328 Pages | ISBN: 9888028421 | PDF | 2 MB
English in Singapore provides an up-to-date, detailed and comprehensive investigation into the various issues surrounding the sociolinguistics of English in Singapore. Rather than attempting to cover the usual topics in an overview of a variety of English in a particular country, the essays in this volume are important for identifying some of the most significant issues pertaining to the state and status of English in Singapore in modern times, and for doing so in a treatment that involves a critical evaluation of work in the field and new and thought-provoking angles for reviewing such issues in the context of Singapore in the twenty-first century. The contributions address the historical trajectory of English (past, present and possible future), its position in relation to language policy and multiculturalism, the relationship between the standard and colloquial varieties, and how English can and should be taught. This book is thus essential reading for scholars and students concerned with how the dynamics of the English language are played out and managed in a modern society such as Singapore. It will also interest readers who have a more general interest in Asian studies, the sociology of language, and World Englishes.
