Eros is a winged god with rosy cheeks and a bow in one hand and Aphrodite the goddess of beauty who rose from the waters of the sea. All around them are satyrs, maenads, rascally elves who dance frenzied dances around a maypole led by Pan. Somewhat like this - it's true - was the ancient understanding of love, as it's presented in a plethora of archaeological finds. Leave yourself free to discover, without taboos and prejudices, through the pages of this book everything about the love life of the ancient Greeks, people who lived in a society with very different beliefs from our own, and allow yourselves to enjoy the greatness of sex and virtue as they understood it!

Examines the many ways historiographical works shaped identities in ancient and medieval societies, providing a basis for understanding the successive developments in Western historiography. The six-volume sub-series Historiography and Identity unites a wide variety of case studies from Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, from the Latin West to the emerging polities in Northern and Eastern Europe, and also incorporates a Eurasian perspective which includes the Islamic World and China. The series aims to develop a critical methodology that harnesses the potential of identity studies to enhance our understanding of the construction and impact of historiography. This first volume in the Historiography and Identity sub-series examines the many ways in which historiographical works shaped identities in ancient and medieval societies by focusing on the historians of ancient Greece and the late Roman Empire. It presents in-depth studies about how history writing could create a sense of community, thereby shedding light on the links between authorial strategies, processes of identification, and cultural memory. The contributions explore the importance of regional, ethnic, cultural, and imperial identities to the process of history writing, embedding the works in the changing political landscape.

This study attempts to elucidate the relationship between rulers and religion among the Svear of the Late Iron Age. Previous research has to a large extent followed the paradigm of sacral kingship when interpreting the Scandinavian sources. Since this paradigm implies a number of methodological difficulties, a new approach is here taken, which also entails a rejection of the hypercritical line of research. Focus is placed on a limited area, Svetjud, in order to make it possible to account for the specific cultural and historical contexts. The ideology of the ruling stratum in Svetjud was partly based on religious elements, more specifically the idea of the ruler's divine descent. Concrete expressions of this ideology, for example, are present in the genealogical lists and poems, which also involved judicial matters, such as claims to property rights. The Svea rulers were also engaged in rituals of different kind, which concerned legitimacy and other aspects as well. The calendarie feasts contributed to maintaining a system of redistribution. If a ruler acted unjustly or lacked the qualities of a legitimate ruler, he could be removed from office, sometimes under ritual forms. Rulership ideology, which pertained not only to the great rulers of Uppsala, the Ynglingar, but also to local chieftains, was adapted to a decentralised society in which the power of rulers was limited by the thing congregations.Contrary to what has been stated in recent research, some elements of pre-Christian rulership ideology and practice persisted until the Early Middle Ages. These elements represent certainly a continuity but set in a new Christian context.
