E-BooksAn Alternative Medical Perspective on Ancient History

An Alternative Medical Perspective on Ancient History
Free Download Philip Anthony Norrie, "An Alternative Medical Perspective on Ancient History"
English | ISBN: 1527518981 | 2023 | 197 pages | PDF | 9 MB
This book tells the story of the world's first documented pandemic, based on ancient Sumerian cuneiform tablets and ancient DNA from skeletons. This pandemic eventually involved all of Eurasia and spread to India and Russia. Ancient historians have suggested many theories for the demise of Sumer and the Indus Valley civilisations; but none have ever proposed the possibility of an infectious disease - a pandemic. Hence, this book rewrites ancient history and asks people to consider the possibility of an infectious disease pandemic being the cause of the eradication of a civilisation.

E-BooksThe Shadow of the Parthenon studies in ancient history and literature

The Shadow of the Parthenon studies in ancient history and literature
Free Download Peter Green, "The Shadow of the Parthenon: studies in ancient history and literature"
English | 2008 | pages: 292 | ISBN: 0520255070 | EPUB | 2,0 mb
A lively combination of scholarship and unorthodoxy makes these studies in ancient history and literature unusually rewarding. Few of the objects of conventional admiration gain much support from Peter Green (Pericles and the "democracy" of fifth-century Athens are treated to a very cool scrutiny) but he has a warm regard for the real virtues of antiquity and for those who spoke with "an individual voice."

E-BooksProperties in Ancient Metaphysics

Properties in Ancient Metaphysics
Free Download Properties in Ancient Metaphysics
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1009475738 | 78 Pages | PDF (True) | 1.5 MB
This Element provides an overview of how the ancient thinkers (Anaxagoras, Plato and Aristotle) theorised about properties; such overview puts in relief the inquiries, problems and solutions they were pursuing while engaged in dialogue with each other. It examines alternative philosophical perspectives existing in antiquity concerning the explanation of property qualification, qualitative similarity, compositeness, and oneness. It further argues that although Plato was the first to conceptualise recurring universals, he did not reify them and did not admit them in his ontology; it was Aristotle who did, and developed his metaphysics around them. Aristotle, building on Plato's work, identified the metaphysical phenomenon of the instantiation of properties and developed an account for it. Finally, this Element outlines Aristotle's 'sophisticated' account of the oneness of a substance and argues that it was not hylomorphic.

Heaven and Earth in Ancient Mexico Astronomy and Seasonal Cycles in the Codex Borgia
Free Download Susan Milbrath, "Heaven and Earth in Ancient Mexico: Astronomy and Seasonal Cycles in the Codex Borgia"
English | 2013 | pages: 225 | ISBN: 0292743734 | PDF | 25,4 mb
The Codex Borgia, a masterpiece that predates the Spanish conquest of central Mexico, records almanacs used in divination and astronomy. Within its beautifully painted screenfold pages is a section (pages 29-46) that shows a sequence of enigmatic pictures that have been the subject of debate for more than a century. Bringing insights from ethnohistory, anthropology, art history, and archaeoastronomy to bear on this passage, Susan Milbrath presents a convincing new interpretation of Borgia 29-46 as a narrative of noteworthy astronomical events that occurred over the course of the year AD 1495-1496, set in the context of the central Mexican festival calendar.

E-BooksHeart of a Warrior 7 Ancient Secrets to a Great Life

Heart of a Warrior 7 Ancient Secrets to a Great Life
Free Download James Langlas, "Heart of a Warrior: 7 Ancient Secrets to a Great Life"
English | 2012 | pages: 160 | ISBN: 157542388X | EPUB | 2,7 mb
The inspiration for this book comes from the ancient Korean history of the Hwarang- young student-warriors who worked to strengthen their spirits as well as their fighting skills. Author Jim Langlas, an educator and Taekwondo master, presents seven principles that are rooted in the long tradition of Taekwondo and are also tied to modern character education: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, indomitable spirit, community service, and love. Breaking each of the principles into four fundamentals, Langlas explores them through a mix of storytelling from the Hwarang and writing from his own former students, describing ways in which they've applied these principles to their own lives and inspiring readers to do the same. Rounding out the narrative are questions to spur reflection, discussion, and action. A background or interest in Taekwondo or other martial arts is by no means necessary for readers to understand and benefit from this engaging book. Its storytelling aspect-and especially the enduring appeal of traditional master/student tales-will resonate with teens of varying interests and backgrounds.

Food in Ancient China
Free Download Food in Ancient China
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1009475800 | 92 Pages | PDF (True) | 4.4 MB
This Element provides an overview of food and foodways in Ancient China, from the earliest humans (~500k BP) up to its historical beginnings: the foundation of the Zhou dynasty (at the start of the 1st millennium BCE). While textual data provides insights on food and diet during China's historical periods, archaeological data is the main source for studying the deep past and reconstructing what people ate, how they ate and with whom they ate it. This Element introduces the plants and animals that formed the building blocks of ancient diets and cuisines, as well as how they created localized lifeways and unifying constructs across ancient China. Foodways, how food was grown, prepared and consumed, was central in the development of differing social, economic and political realities, as it shaped ritual and burial practices, differentiated ethnic groups, solidified community ties and deepened or assuaged social inequalities.
