In 1785, just a few years after U.S. Independence, a young American named James Leander Cathcart is kidnapped at sea and carried as prisoner to the maverick North African statelet of Algiers, where he is held as a political hostage along with hundreds of other seamen captured on the open seas. The piratical corsairs of Algiers have decided, without any warning, to exploit the vulnerability of the newborn United States by seizing its mariners and holding them for ransom while ruthlessly exploiting their free labor. Today, the name of James Leander Cathcart has been all but forgotten by history. And yet he was one of the most remarkable figures in the early story of the fledgling United States.

E-BooksThe Life of Simeon of the Olives An entrepreneurial saint of early Islamic North Mesopotamia

The Life of Simeon of the Olives An entrepreneurial saint of early Islamic North Mesopotamia
Free Download Robert Hoyland, "The Life of Simeon of the Olives: An entrepreneurial saint of early Islamic North Mesopotamia "
English | ISBN: 1463243464 | 2021 | 224 pages | PDF | 9 MB
This book presents the first ever critical edition and complete translation of the Syriac Life of Saint Simeon of the Olives, who was an abbot of Qartmin Monastery in Tur Abdin and a bishop of the city of Harran in the late seventh and early eighth century AD. His career coincided with the beginnings of the incorporation of North Mesopotamia into the expanding Muslim Empire, and offers fascinating insights into this process and the role that SImeon himself played in it, particularly his interaction with Muslim authorities in the cities of Nisibis and Harran. The Life is analyzed from historical and literary perspectives, and its material context is explored by recourse to the latest archaeological surveys and excavations in the region where Simeon lived and worked. The book also follows Simeon as he was transformed into a champion of West Syrian Christianity by later members of that community, who portrayed him as engaging in amicable debates with the intellectually curious caliph al-Ma'mun (813-33) and leading Muslim theologians at his court.

E-BooksReal Dirt An Ex-Industrial Farmer's Guide to Sustainable Eating

Real Dirt An Ex-Industrial Farmer's Guide to Sustainable Eating
Free Download Harry Stoddart, "Real Dirt: An Ex-Industrial Farmer's Guide to Sustainable Eating"
English | ISBN: 1771800119 | 2013 | 220 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Real Dirt is a groundbreaking book for any reader interested in learning more about where food comes from. Harry Stoddart shares years of experience and knowledge in his quirky dissection of agriculture and what we eat. Among his many achievements, he has developed a farming system he believes is the starting point for genuinely sustainable agriculture. A sixth-generation farmer, Harry bought his parent's swine confinement animal feeding operation two decades ago. He converted the farm to be a certified organic system and then to a new one he feels will transform the way we raise and grow our food. He shares this story and more with readers in Real Dirt: An Ex-industrial Farmer's Guide to Sustainable Eating. Harry tackles the major food industry problems, delving into the science and economic issues surrounding sustainable farming. He navigates the "whys" and "hows" of GMOs, resistance-building doses of antibiotics, pesticides, and confinement animal housing, while elaborating on how he damaged the environment more in his first years as an organic farmer than as a conventional farmer. Harry skillfully educates eaters about how they can individually participate in and demand sustainable agriculture. Real Dirt challenges consumers to choose a better future for food production. "I found it very persuasive on many points. Also well written and clear and funny. Congratulations- it's an important contribution to the conversation." - Michael Pollan, Author of Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation (2013) and New York Times bestseller Food Rules: An Eater's Manual (2010) "The most important person to read the message contained in these pages is every consumer, and that's you! Your life will be better for it....You may be shocked but you won't be disappointed." - Elwood Quinn, La Ferme Quinn, Rare Breeds Canada "[Real Dirt] provides the casual reader with a thoughtful and deeper understanding as to how society can have an impact on the way our food is produced.... Read it - you will be informed, entertained and find a personal role for your involvement in our food production practices." - Dr. Frank Ingratta, Retired Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Ontario "Real Dirt is a thoughtful and well researched look at our agriculture and food system...Real Dirt is a must read for anyone who is actually interested in learning about and discussing how to improve our food system for the long term." - Rob Hannam, Owner, Synthesis Agri-Food Network

English | ISBN: 0367530902 | 2021 | 194 pages | EPUB | 1422 KB
This in-depth case study of a mid-sized police department captures the dynamics, struggles, and successes of police change, revealing the positive organizational and community outcomes that resulted from a persistent drive to reinvent public safety and community relationships. The police profession in the United States faces a legitimacy problem. It is critical that police are prepared to change constantly, be adaptive, and adopt openness to self-reflection and external comparison, moving beyond their comfort zone to overcome the inevitable cultural, structural, and political obstacles. Using previously unpublished longitudinal data examining a 25-year period, Bond-Fortier offers a rich account of the complexity of police management and change within one particular mid-sized city: Lowell, Massachusetts.

Not in the Spaces we Know An Exploration of Science Fiction and the Bible
Free Download Edited by Frauke Uhlenbruch; In Collaboration With Anna Angelini & Anne-Sophie Augier, "Not in the Spaces we Know: An Exploration of Science Fiction and the Bible "
English | ISBN: 1463206941 | 2017 | 135 pages | PDF | 991 KB
This volume explores themes at the intersection of the Bible and science fiction. In the genre of science fiction in film, books, comic books, or fan fiction, we find portrayals of possible futures, altered pasts, supernatural or beyond-human beings. Just as in biblical literature, science fiction can contain metaphysical speculation. Departing from this intersection, the authors engage with biblical texts 'as' science fiction, asking different questions of their sources: can science fiction theory and practice yield new approaches to the discussion of biblical texts? The authors reflect on methodology and offer case studies that include, among others, superhuman biblical kings and uncanny divine intermediaries.

Magic's Reason An Anthropology of Analogy
Free Download Graham M. Jones, "Magic's Reason: An Anthropology of Analogy"
English | ISBN: 022651868X | 2017 | 240 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
In Magic's Reason, Graham M. Jones tells the entwined stories of anthropology and entertainment magic. The two pursuits are not as separate as they may seem at first. As Jones shows, they not only matured around the same time, but they also shared mutually reinforcing stances toward modernity and rationality. It is no historical accident, for example, that colonial ethnographers drew analogies between Western magicians and native ritual performers, who, in their view, hoodwinked gullible people into believing their sleight of hand was divine.
