E-BooksAmerican Workers, American Unions The Twentieth Century

American Workers, American Unions The Twentieth Century
American Workers, American Unions: The Twentieth Century By Robert H. Zieger
2002 | 312 Pages | ISBN: 080187078X | PDF | 14 MB
Highly acclaimed and widely read,American Workers, American Unions(first published in 1986, revised ed. 1994) provides a concise and compelling history of American workers and their unions in twentieth-century America. This new edition features new chapters on the pre-1920 period, as well as an entirely new final chapter that covers developments of the 1980s and 1990s in detail. There the authors explore how economic change, union stagnation, and antilabor policies have combined to erode workers' standards and labor's influence in the political arena over the last two decades. They review current "alternatives to unionism" as means of achieving fair workplace representations but insist that strong unions remain essential in a democratic society. They argue that labor's new responsiveness to the concerns of women, minority groups, and low-wage workers, as well as its resurgent political activism, offer new hope for trade unionism. Also included in this third edition is new bibliographical material and a regularly updated on-line link to an extended bibliographical essay.

E-BooksPursuing Moral Warfare Ethics in American, British, and Israeli Counterinsurgency

Pursuing Moral Warfare Ethics in American, British, and Israeli Counterinsurgency
Marcus Schulzke, "Pursuing Moral Warfare: Ethics in American, British, and Israeli Counterinsurgency"
English | ISBN: 1626166587 | 2019 | 256 pages | PDF | 2 MB
During combat, soldiers make life-and-death choices dozens of times a day. These individual decisions accumulate to determine the outcome of wars. This work examines the theory and practice of military ethics in counterinsurgency operations. Marcus Schulzke surveys the ethical traditions that militaries borrow from; compares ethics in practice in the US Army, British Army and Royal Marines Commandos, and Israel Defense Forces; and draws conclusions that may help militaries refine their approaches in future conflicts. The work is based on interviews with veterans and military personnel responsible for ethics training, review of training materials and other official publications, published accounts from combat veterans, and observation of US Army focus groups with active-duty soldiers. Schulzke makes a convincing argument that though military ethics cannot guarantee flawless conduct, incremental improvements can be made to reduce war's destructiveness while improving the success of counterinsurgency operations.

The Royal Air Force in American Skies The Seven British Flight Schools in the United States during World War II
The Royal Air Force in American Skies: The Seven British Flight Schools in the United States during World War II By Tom Killebrew
2015 | 464 Pages | ISBN: 1574416154 | PDF | 4 MB
By early 1941, Great Britain stood alone against the aerial might of Nazi Germany and was sorely in need of pilots. The Lend-Lease Act allowed for the training of British pilots in the United States and the formation of British Flying Training Schools. These unique schools were owned by American operators, staffed with American civilian instructors, supervised by British Royal Air Force officers, utilized aircraft supplied by the US Army Air Corps, and used the RAF training syllabus.Tom Killebrew provides the first comprehensive history of all seven British Flying Training Schools located in Terrell, Texas; Lancaster, California; Miami, Oklahoma; Mesa, Arizona; Clewiston, Florida; Ponca City, Oklahoma; and Sweetwater, Texas. The British students attended classes and mastered the elements of flight day and night. Some students flushed out, while others were killed during training mishaps and are buried in local cemeteries. Those who finished the course became Royal Air Force pilots. These young British students would also forge a strong and long-lasting bond of friendship with the Americans.
