They out-maneuvered the U.S. Coast Guard and risked their lives to deliver illicit liquor.

English | ISBN: 1800738552 | 2023 | 211 pages | PDF | 898 KB
Historians of immigration and ethnicity in the United States have typically devoted little attention to Greek Americans, while popular narratives depict them as indifferent or hostile to political and social radicalism. From acclaimed historian Kostis Karpozilos, Red America provides an alternative narrative of the Greek American experience. Focusing on the history of the Greek American Left from the beginning of the twentieth century to the Cold War, this volume uncovers the threads that bound notions of radical social change to everyday immigrant life, tracing ethnic radicalism from the boundaries of a specific community to the epicenter of American social and political history.

E-BooksPast Climate Variability in South America and Surrounding Regions From the Last Glacial Maximum to the Holocene (2024)

Past Climate Variability in South America and Surrounding Regions From the Last Glacial Maximum to the Holocene (2024)
Free Download Francoise Vimeux, Florence Sylvestre, Myriam Khodri, "Past Climate Variability in South America and Surrounding Regions: From the Last Glacial Maximum to the Holocene"
English | 2009 | pages: 423 | ISBN: 9400730519, 9048126711 | PDF | 16,6 mb
South America is a unique place where a number of past climate archives are ava- able from tropical to high latitude regions. It thus offers a unique opportunity to explore past climate variability along a latitudinal transect from the Equator to Polar regions and to study climate teleconnections. Most climate records from tropical and subtropical South America for the past 20,000 years have been interpreted as local responses to shift in the mean position and intensity of the InterTropical Conv- gence Zone due to tropical and extratropical forcings or to changes in the South American Summer Monsoon. Further South, the role of the Southern Hemisphere westerly winds on global climate has been highly investigated with both paleodata and coupled climate models. However the regional response over South America during the last 20,000 years is much more variable from place to place than pre- ously thought. The factors that govern the spatial patterns of variability on millennial scale resolution are still to be understood. The question of past natural rates and ranges of climate conditions over South America is therefore of special relevance in this context since today millions of people live under climates where any changes in monsoon rainfall can lead to catastrophic consequences.

Forging Latin America Profiles in Power and Ideas, 1492 to Today
Free Download Russell Crandall, "Forging Latin America: Profiles in Power and Ideas, 1492 to Today"
English | ISBN: 1538183323 | 2023 | 584 pages | EPUB | 9 MB
A sweeping yet intimate exploration of Latin America's political history, Forging Latin America profiles fifty-two of the region's most influential figures who, for better or worse, have shaped its character and destiny from the Spanish Conquest to the present day. This polyphonic gathering of dictators, reformers, revolutionaries, artists, writers, priests, and activists not only foregrounds the major political developments since 1492 but also spotlights lesser-known stories of hope, change, and resistance from the ground up. Along the way, the book shows how ideas can bring down a government or build one, how power corrodes ideology until the perpetuation of power becomes an ideology in and of itself, and how the intellectual heritage of Latin America has been used, disputed, and reinvented over five astonishing centuries.
