2010 | 384 Pages | ISBN: 0822345560 | PDF | 4 MB
In 1956, in the Brazilian state of Rondonia, near the border with Bolivia, a group of Wari' Indians experienced their first peaceful contact with whites: Protestant missionaries and agents from the national government's Indian Protection Service. On returning to their villages, the Wari' announced, 'We touched their bodies!' The whites reported to their people that 'The region's most warlike tribe has entered the pacification phase!' First published in Brazil, "Strange Enemies" is a vivid ethnography describing the first encounters between two groups with radically different worldviews. "Aparecida Vilaca" focuses on the process of pacification conducted by Brazilian government agents, U.S. Protestant missionaries, and representatives of the Catholic Church between 1956 and 1969. During the 1940s and 1950s, white rubber-tappers interested in Wari' lands raided their villages, shooting and killing sleeping victims. Those massacres prompted the Wari' to initiate a period of intense retaliatory warfare. The national government and religious organizations stepped in, seeking to pacify the Indians. Vilaca was able to interview both Wari' and non-Wari' people who participated in these events. She reproduces many Wari' testimonies in "Strange Enemies". Drawing on those interviews and an analysis of tribal myths, Vilaca describes Wari' conceptions of self and other. The Wari' categorize others as strangers and enemies. White people are enemies. In the past, enemies could be killed in acts of warfare. In the present day, violent encounters are rare and life in close proximity with enemies is common. Vilaca provides a subtle analysis of what it means for the Wari' to live with enemies when warfare is no longer an option. With "Strange Enemies", she makes a major contribution to the ethnographic record on Amazonia and the understanding of the present-day situation of indigenous people.

E-BooksThe Transcendence of Desire A Theology of Political Agency

The Transcendence of Desire A Theology of Political Agency
Free Download Tom James, "The Transcendence of Desire: A Theology of Political Agency "
English | ISBN: 3031462262 | 2023 | 262 pages | EPUB, PDF | 462 KB + 4 MB
The "secular age" is not a smooth, untroubled process of accumulation and advance but an uneven and unpredictable series of clashes of interest. Charles Taylor's "immanent frame" cannot be construed merely as a phenomenon within religion and culture but urgently needs to be understood in political and economic terms-i.e., as a class project. The failure of the secular, vividly displayed in the crumbling legitimacy of global institutions and in the spectacle of police violence, both calls for and makes possible a renewal of political agency. Tom James and David True argue that a theology of the cross has a distinctive potential today: it can pierce the sacred aura of normalcy around the consensual anti-politics of the neoliberal order so that a vision of a world beyond today's racialized capitalism can emerge. But they contend that we don't need to forsake the emancipatory aims of modernity nor retreat to local communities. As an alternative to these weak strategies, they offer a constructive and cruciform account of political agency that includes both prophetic resistance and practical wisdom, each embedded in contemporary struggles for freedom that, they argue, embody divine desire for a common world.

E-BooksAction Reconceptualized Human Agency and Its Sources

Action Reconceptualized Human Agency and Its Sources
Free Download David K. Chan, "Action Reconceptualized: Human Agency and Its Sources"
English | ISBN: 1498519644 | 2016 | 230 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
The concept of action that requires philosophical analysis is one that concerns behavior characteristically found in humans. In Action Reconceptualized: Human Agency and Its Sources, David K. Chan examines the sources of human agency that are proposed in causal theories of action-namely desire, intention, and trying-and distinguishes them from each other in terms of their roles in practical reasoning and motivation. He conceptualizes them in relation to each other in a way that is consistent and useful for answering a number of questions that are central to the philosophy of action. The action theory in this book addresses the need to understand human agency for its own sake, but it also serves another purpose. When the philosopher Elizabeth Anscombe stressed the need to do philosophy of action before doing ethical theory, what she meant was that moral philosophers should first work out a proper account of the relationship between the inner states of a person and the actions that she performs. This book provides such an account, and makes the case that it is desire, rather than intention, that is the basis for the ethical evaluation of an agent. Action Reconceptualized will be of particular interest to students and scholars doing research in action theory and ethics, as well as to those working outside of philosophy in psychology and cognitive science.

Agency and Transformation Motives, Mediation, and Motion
Free Download Agency and Transformation: Motives, Mediation, and Motion
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1009153676 | 420 Pages | PDF | 4 MB
Understanding and promoting agency are crucial to addressing urgent social problems of our time. Through agency, we can take transformative steps toward the future that ought to be. This book shows how contemporary conceptualizations from cultural-historical activity theory can inform research and practice that fosters positive change. At the core of this book's novel approach to agency and transformation are three motifs: motives, mediation, and motion. These take inspiration from the original work of Vygotsky and subsequent generations of scholarship, enabling us to understand agency in ways that recognize the social and cultural aspects of agency without losing sight of individuals' contributions to changing their own lives and the lives of others. Referring to connections between learning, pedagogy, and agency, the chapters address power, freedom, and the future in contexts including adolescence, school exclusion, children's activism, Indigenous communities, environmental activism, homelessness, childbirth, and young people during the COVID-19 pandemic.
