E-BooksSavage Constructions The Myth of African Savagery

Savage Constructions The Myth of African Savagery
Savage Constructions: The Myth of African Savagery By Wendy C. Hamblet
2008 | 278 Pages | ISBN: 0739122800 | PDF | 8 MB
Savage Constructions composes a critical examination of the popular assumption that violence is an essential quality of certain ethnic or racial populations. Wendy C. Hamblet offers a theory of subjectivity transformed by historical violence. Rethinking how African peoples, once living in simple neighborly communities more democratic and egalitarian than modern states, have come to the condition of abjection, misery, and fierce aggression she argues that Western affluence is built upon slaughter, slavery, and colonial oppression, and suggests that prosperous nations of the West owe a great debt to the societies they trampled en route to their prosperity.Newly independent African nations are primary examples of a much vaster phenomenon Western powers continue to sack poorer, weaker countries through covert intrigue, outright war, crippling debts, and unfair global labor and trade policies. The violences continue because many Westerners still harbor metaphysical assumptions about the supremacy of white Christians over less "civilized," darker-skinned peoples. These assumptions depress the possibilities of ethnic minorities within the West, continue to influence foreign-policy and frustrate global relations, and ensure that the overwhelming collateral damage of modern wars is color conscious. 'Savage Constructions' will appeal to all levels of scholars and students.WENDY C. HAMBLET is an assistant professor in the Department of University Studies at North Carolina A&T State University.

Hail Orisha! A Phenomenology of a West African Religion in the Mid-Nineteenth Century
Hail Orisha! A Phenomenology of a West African Religion in the Mid-Nineteenth Century By Peter McKenzie
1997 | 600 Pages | ISBN: 9004109420 | PDF | 16 MB
Orisha worshippers who were not subjected to forced migration to the Americas in the nineteenth century remained their own masters, inhabiting cities, towns and farm villages in their West African kingdoms. This study uses documentation from Yoruba writings and from the written record of European missionaries to describe the various facets of their religious life. Arranged in the form of a phenomenology, the work deals with such matters as the veneration of the environment; carved images of the divine; the orisha celebrated in festival, worship and sacrifice; systems of divination; female and male religious specialists; and the protean divinities themselves. The comprehensive use of archival material will ensure the abiding value of this historical picture of the orisha, useful for comparisons with the present day.Peter R. McKenzie, Ph. D. (1953) in Church History, University of Edinburgh, is former Head of Department of Religion, University of Leicester, England. He has published extensively on Phenomenology and History of Religion and West African Religious History including Inter-religious Encounters in West Africa (Leicester, 1976).

E-BooksDomingos Álvares, African Healing, and the Intellectual History of the Atlantic World

Domingos Álvares, African Healing, and the Intellectual History of the Atlantic World
Domingos Álvares, African Healing, and the Intellectual History of the Atlantic World By James H. Sweet
2011 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 1469609754 | PDF | 6 MB
Between 1730 and 1750, Domingos Alvares traversed the colonial Atlantic world like few Africans of his time--from Africa to South America to Europe. By tracing the steps of this powerful African healer and vodun priest, James Sweet finds dramatic means for unfolding a history of the eighteenth-century Atlantic world in which healing, religion, kinship, and political subversion were intimately connected.Alvares treated many people across the Atlantic, yet healing was rarely a simple matter of remedying illness and disease. Through the language of health and healing, Alvares also addressed the profound alienation of warfare, capitalism, and the African slave trade. As a result, he and other African healers frequently ran afoul of imperial power brokers. Nevertheless, even the powerful suffered isolation in the Atlantic world and often turned to African healers for answers. In this way, healers simultaneously became fierce critics of Atlantic imperialism and expert translators of it, adapting their therapeutic strategies in order to secure social relevance and even power. By tracing Alvares' frequent uprooting and border crossing, Sweet illuminates how African healing practices evolved in the diaspora, contesting the social and political hierarchies of imperialism while also making profound impacts on the intellectual discourse of the "modern" Atlantic world.
