Covid–19 in Africa Societal and Economic Implications
Free Download Covid-19 in Africa: Societal and Economic Implications by Susan Arndt, Banhoro Yacouba, Taibat Lawanson, Enocent Msindo, Peter Simatei
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 330 Pages | ISBN : 3031403150 | 12.5 MB
Written amidst the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, this edited volume draws on the expertise of social scientists and humanities scholars to understand the many ramifications of Covid-19 on societies, politics, and the economies of Africa. The contributors examine measures, communicative practices, and experiences that have guided the (inter)action of governments, societies, and citizens in this unpredictable moment. Covid-19 tested governments' disaster preparedness as well as exposed governments' attitudes towards the poor and vulnerable. In the same vein, it also tested the agency of the African populace in the face of containment measures and their impact on everyday social, cultural, and economic practices of ordinary people. In this vein, our concern is to understand the relationship between growing vulnerability on the one hand, and ingenuity of agency on the other, and how both were embodied, narrated and discoursed by the African poor, university students, religious entities, middle-classes, and those who bore the major brunt of the lockdowns.

E-BooksContemporary Issues in Africa's Development

Contemporary Issues in Africa's Development
Free Download Ehimika A. Ifidon Richard A. Olaniyan, "Contemporary Issues in Africa's Development"
English | ISBN: 1527503631 | 2018 | 412 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This volume reports on the state of crisis in Africa in the early twenty-first century. Africa, on the eve of the independence revolution, was the continent of hope and high expectations. By the third decade of independence, optimism had been replaced by dismality. African states had been beset by ethno-political squabbles, military rule, civil wars, Islamic and insurgent movements, extreme poverty and disease. With the ascent of redemocratization in the 1990s and of new pan-Africanism derived from the formation of the African Union, Africa appeared set to claim its vaunted destiny. This book asks, with hindsight to the first decade of the twenty-first century: how real was the renaissance in African life? If the dismal African condition is a phase in the historical development of Africa, this volume does not see any golden age in the past to which Africa aspires to return. There is clearly a continuation and persistence of crisis, with an absence of good governance, personalisation of state power, widespread disease, and policy failure in education, economy and infrastructural development. Although endowed with abundant human and natural resources, Africa remains the least developed and most indebted continent. Whither then the African Renaissance? The methodologies that underpin the contributions in this book are as diverse as the specialisations of the contributors. The collection questions ideologically protected assumptions and presumptions, presenting Africa as it is, because it is only by knowing where Africa truly stands that a proper direction can be charted for it.

It has supported the region's quest for independence and national liberation, exchanged diplomatic recognition, and established political partnerships.

With a focus on policy, technology, financing, and socio-political factors, the book presents four potential scenarios for a sustainable energy transition in the continent. E-BooksKoevoet Experiencing South Africa's Deadly Bush War

Koevoet Experiencing South Africa's Deadly Bush War
Free Download Jim Hooper, "Koevoet: Experiencing South Africa's Deadly Bush War"
English | 2013 | pages: 312 | ISBN: 0957058705 | EPUB | 77,0 mb
Koevoet! has been an global bestseller since its release over 20 years ago. This new edition goes far beyond the original in capturing the courage, fear and intensity of South Africa's deadly bush war. Never before had an outsider been given unrestricted access to Koevoet, the elite South West African Police counterinsurgency unit - also known as Operation K and officially as the South West Africa Police Counter Insurgency Unit (SWAPOL-COIN). Author Jim Hooper spent a total of five months embedded with the semi-secret and predominantly black 'Ops K', which climaxed with one of the most vicious and determined infiltrations ever mounted by the communist-backed South West Africa People s Organization (SWAPO). Crossing regularly into Angola in pursuit of the insurgents, he saw friends die next to him and was twice wounded himself. This updated edition, drawing on the recollections and diaries of the men he rode with, will fascinate yet another generation of readers. In assembling this work, Jim Hooper had the opportunity to re-connect with so many of the men who allowed this outsider to ride with them. All of which brought a new intensity and poignancy. It also reminded Jim Hooper how privileged he was to have been witness to Koevoet's war. This stunning work is a tribute to Koevoet and the legend they created.

E-BooksAid and Authoritarianism in Africa Development without Democracy

Aid and Authoritarianism in Africa Development without Democracy
Free Download Professor Filip Reyntjens, "Aid and Authoritarianism in Africa: Development without Democracy"
English | 2016 | pages: 192 | ISBN: 1783606282 | EPUB | 1,0 mb
In 2013 almost half of Africa's top aid recipients were ruled by authoritarian regimes. While the West may claim to promote democracy and human rights, in practice major bilateral and international donors, such as USAID, DFID, the World Bank and the European Commission, have seen their aid policies become ever more entangled with the survival of their authoritarian protégés. Local citizens thus find themselves at the receiving end of a compromise between aid agencies and government elites, in which development policies are shaped in the interests of maintaining the status quo.
