Maritime China in Transition 1750-1850
Wang Gungwu, Ng Chin-Keong, "Maritime China in Transition 1750-1850"
English | 2004 | ISBN: 3447050365 | PDF | pages: 412 | 154.3 mb
This collection contains an introductory essay by Wang Gungwu and 22 studies originally read to an international conference organized by the Department of History, National University of Singapore. The contributions investigate diverse aspects of coastal Chinas commercial, demographic and other ties with the Nanyang region and other maritime areas, such as Japan, mainly in the period circa 1750-1850. This includes themes related to the microlevel of local changes, such as Chinese migration to Taiwan and various Southeast Asian destinations, as well as broader approaches to regional, institutional and other trends, combining philological and theoretical knowledge. In most cases both Asian and colonial sources were used to illustrate the dynamics of Chinas maritime orientation under the Qing, the growth of its overseas communities, and the impact of Chinese traders and sojourners on Europes outposts in the Malay world and around the South China Sea.

E-BooksTransport Curiosities, 1850-1950 Weird and Wonderful Ways of Travelling by Road, Rail, Air and Sea

Transport Curiosities, 1850-1950 Weird and Wonderful Ways of Travelling by Road, Rail, Air and Sea
John Wade, "Transport Curiosities, 1850-1950: Weird and Wonderful Ways of Travelling by Road, Rail, Air and Sea"
English | ISBN: 1399003976 | 2022 | 208 pages | PDF | 48 MB
Over the years many weird and wonderful types of transport have come and gone, some of which succeeded against all odds, others that spectacularly failed, and some that never got beyond a designer's drawing board. Railway engines driven by horses, for example. Or maybe the surprising number of cars, boats and trains driven by airplane propellers. In this book you will find cars that flew, cars that floated on water and boats that ran on roads; steam-powered airplanes, electric submarines, railways driven by pneumatic air, aircraft with flapping wings...and a whole lot more. If you are a person who would like to have flown in an airship, or traveled in a train whose carriage sat on stilts above the sea with its tracks below the water, or dreamed of riding on a London to New York railway that took twelve days to travel the long way around the world, or maybe just fancied fixing your bicycle to a railway track, then this book is for you.

E-BooksWomen and museums 1850-1914 Modernity and the gendering of knowledge

Women and museums 1850-1914 Modernity and the gendering of knowledge
Kate Hill, "Women and museums 1850-1914: Modernity and the gendering of knowledge "
English | ISBN: 1526136678 | 2018 | 272 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This book recovers the significant contribution made by women to museums, not just in obvious roles such as workers, but also as donors, visitors, volunteers and patrons. It suggests that women persistently acted to domesticate the museum, by importing domestic objects and domestic regimes of value, as well as by making museums more welcoming to children, and even by stressing the importance of housekeeping at the museum. At the same time, women sought 'masculine' careers in science and curatorship, but found such aspirations hard to achieve; their contribution tended to be kept within clear, feminised areas.
