Free Download Brian E Cooper, "First Heisman: The Life of Jay Berwanger"
English | ISBN: 0988571609 | 2013 | 336 pages | EPUB | 6 MB
A biography of Jay Berwanger (1914-2002), heralded as one the greatest football players of the first half of the 20th century. The modest son of an Iowa blacksmith, Berwanger starred at the University of Chicago (1933-35), then a member of the Big Ten Conference. He earned All-America honors in 1934 and 1935, including the captaincy of a 1934 All-America Team. In 1935, he received the first Heisman Trophy. Berwanger was the first player selected in the first-ever draft of the National Football League. However, he passed up the NFL and took a job in Chicago, where he eventually became a business owner and millionaire. His post-athletic years included stints as a sportswriter, coach, referee and military pilot trainer. As the significance of the Heisman Trophy increased over time, so did Berwanger's standing as the first Heisman recipient.

E-BooksFilms for the Colonies Cinema and the Preservation of the British Empire

Films for the Colonies Cinema and the Preservation of the British Empire
Free Download Films for the Colonies: Cinema and the Preservation of the British Empire By Tom Rice
2019 | 343 Pages | ISBN: 0520300386 | PDF | 32 MB
Films for the Colonies examines the British Government's use of film across its vast Empire from the 1920s until widespread independence in the 1960s. Central to this work was the Colonial Film Unit, which produced, distributed, and, through its network of mobile cinemas, exhibited instructional and educational films throughout the British colonies. Using extensive archival research and rarely seen films, Films for the Colonies provides a new historical perspective on the last decades of the British Empire. It also offers a fresh exploration of British and global cinema, charting the emergence and endurance of new forms of cinema culture from Ghana to Jamaica, Malta to Malaysia. In highlighting the integral role of film in managing and maintaining a rapidly changing Empire, Tom Rice offers a compelling and far-reaching account of the media, propaganda, and the legacies of colonialism.

E-BooksFeminist Afterlives of the Witch Popular Culture, Memory, Activism

Feminist Afterlives of the Witch Popular Culture, Memory, Activism
Free Download Feminist Afterlives of the Witch: Popular Culture, Memory, Activism
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031252918 | 410 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 3 MB
The book investigates the witch as a key rhetorical symbol in twentieth- and twenty-first century feminist memory, politics, activism, and popular culture. The witch demonstrates the inheritance of paradoxical pasts, traversing numerous ideological memoryscapes. This book is an examination of the ways that the witch has been deployed by feminist activists and writers in their political efforts in the twentieth century, and how this has indelibly affected cultural memories of the witch and the witch trials, and how this plays out in popular culture representations of the symbol through the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Consequently, this book considers the relationship between popular culture and media, activist politics, and cultural memory. Using hauntological theories of memory and temporality, and literary, screen, and cultural studies methodologies, this book considers how popular culture remembers, misremembers, and forgets usable pasts, and the uses (and misuses) of these memories for feminist politics. Given the ubiquity of the witch in popular culture, politics and activism since 2016, this book is a timely examination of the range of meanings inherent to the figure, and is an important study of how cultural symbols like the witch inherit paradoxical memories, histories, and politics. The book will be valuable for scholars across disciplines, including witchcraft studies, feminist philosophy and history, memory studies, and popular culture studies.

In Famine (1981), a collection of essays by experts from the developing world and advanced agricultural societies, the authors share their ecological perspectives and provide an insight into the multiple causes of famine. They examine the fact that the main cause of famine is more likely to be as a result of human actions, rather than the vagaries of climate, and look at whether planned intervention by governments and relief agencies may compound the problems already existing.

E-BooksFairness and the Goals of International Criminal Trials

Fairness and the Goals of International Criminal Trials
Free Download Fairness and the Goals of International Criminal Trials: Finding a Balance
English | 2023 | ISBN: 0367461641 | 193 Pages | PDF (True) | 7 MB
This book presents a ground-breaking, interdisciplinary study into the various goals assigned to international criminal trials. It starts from the proposition that no hierarchy exists amongst the different goals meaning that trials should strive to achieve all of them in equal measure. This is made difficult by the fact that not all of these goals are compatible and the fulfilment of one may lead to others going unmet. Therefore, a balance must be found if the goals of trial are to be achieved at all. The book posits that fairness should serve as the guiding principle when weighing the different trial goals against one another. It is argued that without fairness international and internationalised criminal courts and tribunals lack legitimacy and without legitimacy they lack effectiveness. The book concludes that international criminal trials must adopt procedures that emphasise fairness to all of the parties and trial participants if they wish to accomplish any of the goals set for them. Each chapter is devoted to identifying and explaining a different trial goal, providing analysis of how that particular goal functions in conjunction with the other goals, and discussing the ways in which a fairness oriented trial model will help achieve those goals. The book provides a dynamic understanding of the different trial goals and the importance of fairness in the trial process by drawing on research from a variety of different legal disciplines while also incorporating scholarship rooted in criminology, political theory, international relations, and psychology. The book will be essential reading for researchers, academics and professionals working in the areas of International Criminal Law, Public International Law and Transitional Justice.
