E-BooksBroadcasters Untold Chaos

Broadcasters Untold Chaos
Free Download Rick Fredericksen, "Broadcasters: Untold Chaos"
English | 2017 | ASIN: B072B6XWQ1 | EPUB | pages: 209 | 2.4 mb
Tantalizing details of news stories are often never told. That changes in "Broadcasters: Untold Chaos," where a veteran journalist sheds new light on a career reaching from Saigon to Sioux City. These insider accounts-little-known or never told-include threats against CBS News, lunch with Ferdinand Marcos, a shocking on-air protest ignited by censorship and a military TV station destroyed with 100% casualties. One central story recounts a tense confrontation on September 11, 2001. Just hours after two pilots had taken possession of a Cessna aircraft and were flying over the Midwest, their small plane was targeted by F-16 fighter jets. The civilians may have been the last Americans to learn that our country was under attack. These hand-picked stories were selected from a 50-year career by former military and civilian news broadcaster Rick Fredericksen. "Some events and news makers deserve more attention," according to the author, who reopened his old reporter's notebooks to reveal hidden accounts stretching from the Vietnam War to the war against terrorism. The tragic saga of CBS war photographer Vinh Ve is a recurring theme through the first chapters. He would suffer terribly after the fall of Saigon-even finding himself at odds with the network that made him a legend-only to re-emerge years later when General Norman Schwarzkopf returned to Vietnam. Other topics include real life stories and characters at the American Forces Vietnam Network, made famous in the movie "Good Morning, Vietnam"; a field investigation on the suspected impact of Agent Orange on Vietnamese civilians; and the downfall of a world-famous pop star in Bangkok. "Broadcasters: Untold Chaos" includes 27 historic photographs in a nostalgic journey for broadcasters, news junkies and Vietnam War enthusiasts. This written record was made possible by a treasure trove of documentation that was left behind in the shadows of the day's bigger headlines. "Broadcasters: Untold Chaos" is a salute to the actual broadcasters themselves, especially foreign correspondents who are sometimes confronted with grave danger. Author Fredericksen is the last Bangkok Bureau Chief for CBS News.

E-BooksBritish, French and American Relations on the Western Front, 1914–1918

British, French and American Relations on the Western Front, 1914–1918
Free Download British, French and American Relations on the Western Front, 1914-1918 by Chris Kempshall
English | June 28, 2018 | ISBN: 3319894641 | 325 pages | MOBI | 3.28 Mb
This book provides a thorough examination of the relations between the men in the British, French and American armies on the Western Front of the First World War. The Allied victory in 1918 was built on the backs of British, French, and American soldiers who joined together to fight for a common cause. Using the diaries, records, and letters of these men, Chris Kempshall shows how these soldiers interacted with each other during four years of war. The British army that arrived in France in 1914 became isolated from their French allies and unable to coordinate with them. By 1916, Britain's professional soldiers were replaced by civilians who learned to love their French ally, who reached out to them in friendship. At the end of the war the introduction of American soldiers caused hope and conflict before perceived British failures brought the alliance to the brink of collapse. Final cooperation between these three nations saw them victorious.

E-BooksBritish Philanthropy in the Globalizing World Entrepreneurs and Evangelicals, 1756–1840

British Philanthropy in the Globalizing World Entrepreneurs and Evangelicals, 1756–1840
Free Download Dr Roshan Allpress, "British Philanthropy in the Globalizing World: Entrepreneurs and Evangelicals, 1756-1840 "
English | ISBN: 0198887191 | 2024 | 336 pages | EPUB, PDF | 3 MB + 11 MB
Between 1756 and 1840, philanthropy in the British world grew from the domain of small, associational committees to a vast enterprise of philanthropic and humanitarian societies with global reach. British Philanthropy in the Globalizing World tells the story of this movement, from its inception in small networks of mercantile and religious entrepreneurs to its signal projects and achievements in the abolition of slavery, in evangelical missionary societies, Bible societies, and in the early indigenous rights movement. It traces the lives and networks of hundreds of philanthropists across four generations, showing how their social, religious, economic, intellectual, and cultural worlds intersected to foster philanthropic innovation through organisational models, transnational networks, and the creation of a unique formative culture. It shows how groups such as the Clapham Sect - including William Wilberforce, Henry Thornton, Hannah More, James Stephen, and others - emerged in an intergenerational context, and how they sought to effect social and cultural change across multiple spheres. For every headline achievement, there were many failed experiments, inner wrestlings, and long-running intellectual collaborations that left a wide and deep imprint on the cultural and political landscape of the English-speaking world. Drawing on the separate historiographies of metropolitan philanthropy, associational culture, anti-slavery, moral reform, Evangelicalism, colonial missions, and economic thought, the study unites into one analytical frame both the imaginative and organizational realities of philanthropy, offering a dual focus on individual philanthropists - their inner lives, daily practices, and participation in collaborative communities - and on mapping the networks that bound philanthropic societies and projects together in metropolitan London and at the far reaches of the British world. In doing so, it offers a very human portrait of these entrepreneurs and evangelicals, as they pursued a philanthropic global vision.

Britain After the Five Crises Financial Collapse, Migration, Brexit, Covid and the Ukraine
Free Download Britain After the Five Crises: Financial Collapse, Migration, Brexit, Covid and the Ukraine by P. W. Preston
English | PDF (True) | 2023 | 275 Pages | ISBN : 3031436490 | 3 MB
The period 2008-2022 has seen the British state/government embroiled in a number of full-blown crises, each impacting the fundamental operations of the state and demanding, therefore, urgent responses from the government of the day. In the first case, the 2008 near-collapse and partial nationalization of the banking system consequent upon decades of irresponsible credit creation coupled to permissive regulation; in the second , the migration crisis of 2015, which saw waves of refugees moving through Europe, provoking anxious responses from European Union member states and opening-up related political debates in Britain; thus, third , the 2016 referendum in regard to membership of the European Union, which the London-based elite clearly thought they would navigate easily before, to their evident shock, losing, an event itself precipitating further extraordinary Westminster manoeuvring; and then fourth the 2020 Covid- 19 pandemic, met with an initial casual sangfroid before the government, its actions informed by epidemiological modelling, made an abrupt shift to 'lockdown', with dramatic social and economic consequences. To these episodes, whose impacts run down to the present, could be added, fifth, the 2022 disaster in Ukraine where the British state/government has chosen to involve itself by supporting one set of combatants in a conflict where presently, after more than a year of fighting, there is little sign of a means to the resolution of the violence. This book examines the crises and tracks how each developed; how state/ government failings in one case were rehearsed in the next; and, more generally, how these crises have been amplified by the decades-long celebration of globalization theory; and, finally, at how following the most recent crisis the future might unfold, hence the ideas of deglobalization, resilience and, more speculatively, the possibilities of democratization.
