Music and Minorities from Around the World Research, Documentation and Interdisciplinary Study
Free Download Ursula Hemetek, "Music and Minorities from Around the World: Research, Documentation and Interdisciplinary Study"
English | ISBN: 1443866202 | 2014 | 230 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The acceleration of mobility among the world's peoples, the growth of populations resettling in places other than their homelands, and world events that have propelled these developments have brought minorities unprecedented attention. Their significance as subjects for study has grown correspondingly and the study of their music has become an important gateway into understanding the culture of minorities. The Study Group for Music and Minorities, part of the International Council for Traditional Music, has seen a steady increase in membership since its inception in 1998 - evidence of the growing interest in minorities worldwide. The Group meets every two years in different parts of the world, and every meeting has resulted in a published volume of papers presented at the meeting. As has been the case in previous volumes where the interests of the host country are well-represented, the current volume attends to Jewish themes, with the meeting from which the volume derives having taken place in Israel. Geographically, the book's subjects and authors come from four continents, emphasizing the global scope of music and minorities. The methodological approaches used in this volume range from musical analysis in the educational context to the cultural studies approach. In both subject matter and perspective, therefore, this book represents the broad range of modern ethnomusicology today.

Merit The History of a Founding Ideal from the American Revolution to the Twenty–First Century Ed 3
Free Download Joseph Kett, "Merit: The History of a Founding Ideal from the American Revolution to the Twenty-First Century Ed 3"
English | ISBN: 0801451221 | 2013 | 344 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The idea that citizens' advancement should depend exclusively on merit, on qualities that deserve reward rather than on bloodlines or wire-pulling, was among the Founding ideals of the American republic, Joseph F. Kett argues in this provocative and engaging book. Merit's history, he contends, is best understood within the context of its often conflicting interaction with the other ideals of the Founding, equal rights and government by consent. Merit implies difference; equality suggests sameness. By sanctioning selection of those lower down by those higher up, merit potentially conflicts with the republican ideal that citizens consent to the decisions that affect their lives.

In Mental Patient, philosopher Abigail Gosselin uses her personal experiences with psychosis and the process of recovery to explore often overlooked psychiatric ethics. For many people who struggle with psychosis, she argues, psychosis impairs agency and autonomy. She shows how clinicians can help psychiatric patients regain agency and autonomy through a positive therapeutic relationship characterized by mutual trust. Patients, she says, need to take an active role in regaining their agency and autonomy-specifically, by giving testimony, constructing a narrative of their experience to instill meaning, making choices about treatment, and deciding to show up and participate in life activities.
