E-BooksHomo aestheticus. From where art comes from and why

Homo aestheticus. From where art comes from and why
Free Download Homo aestheticus. From where art comes from and why By Ellen Dissanayake
1995 | 695 Pages | ISBN: 0295974796 | PDF | 4 MB
All human societies throughout history have given a special place to the arts. Even nomadic peoples who own scarcely any material possessions embellish what they do own, decorate their bodies, and celebrate special occasions with music, song, and dance. A fundamentally human appetite or need is being expressed--and met--by artistic activity. As Ellen Dissanayake argues in this stimulating and intellectually far-ranging book, only by discovering the natural origins of this human need of art will we truly know what art is, what it means, and what its future might be. Describing visual display, poetic language, song and dance, music, and dramatic performance as ways by which humans have universally, necessarily, and immemorially shaped and enhanced the things they care about, Dissanayake shows that aesthetic perception is not something that we learn or acquire for its own sake but is inherent in the reconciliation of culture and nature that has marked our evolution as humans. What "artists" do is an intensification and exaggeration of what "ordinary people" do, naturally and with enjoyment--as is evident in premodern societies, where artmaking is universally practiced. Dissanayake insists that aesthetic experience cannot be properly understood apart from the psychobiology of sense, feeling, and cognition--the ways we spontaneously and commonly think and behave. If homo aestheticus seems unrecognizable in today's modern and postmodern societies, it is so because "art" has been falsely set apart from life, while the reductive imperatives of an acquisitive and efficiency-oriented culture require us to ignore or devalue the aesthetic part of our nature. Dissanayake's original and provocativeapproach will stimulate new thinking in the current controversies regarding multi-cultural curricula and the role of art in education. Her ideas also have relevance to contemporary art and social theory and will be of interest to all who care strongly about the arts and their place.

E-BooksHelping People Help Themselves From The World Bank To An Alternative Philosophy Of Development Assistance

Helping People Help Themselves From The World Bank To An Alternative Philosophy Of Development Assistance
Free Download David P. Ellerman, "Helping People Help Themselves: From The World Bank To An Alternative Philosophy Of Development Assistance"
English | 2005 | pages: 359 | ISBN: 0472114654, 0472031422 | PDF | 1,2 mb
David Ellerman relates a deep theoretical groundwork for a philosophy of development, while offering a descriptive, practical suggestion of how goals of development can be better set and met. Beginning with the assertion that development assistance agencies are inherently structured to provide help that is ultimately unhelpful by overriding or undercutting the capacity of people to help themselves, David Ellerman argues that the best strategy for development is a drastic reduction in development assistance. The locus of initiative can then shift from the would-be helpers to the doers (recipients) of development. Ellerman presents various methods for shifting initiative that are indirect, enabling and autonomy-respecting. Eight representative figures in the fields of education, community organization, economic development, psychotherapy and management theory including: Albert Hirschman, Paulo Freire, John Dewey, and Søren Kierkegaard demonstrate how the major themes of assisting autonomy among people are essentially the same.

Free Download Green Automation: Increasing Sustainability, From Industry to Our Home
English | 2024 | ISBN: 103223489X | 229 Pages | PDF (True) | 10 MB
Environmental issues are a growing concern for our society, and should deserve increased attention, given the extremely negative climate changes which have been taking place. Emissions of greenhouse gases, excessive dependence on fossil fuels, growing consumption of power energy, and exacerbated consumption of materials are some of the problems that need to be addressed urgently. Some of these problems can be overcome through ingenious solutions based on automation. This book aims to make a contribution precisely in this sense, criticizing the current state of society in general and providing some solutions that can be used as a basis for the development of more environmentally friendly systems.

Grammar and Text Selected Papers from the 10th and 11th Fora for Linguistic Sharing
Free Download Grammar and Text: Selected Papers from the 10th and 11th Fora for Linguistic Sharing By Maria Antania Coutinho; Ana Guilherme
2018 | 167 Pages | ISBN: 1527505685 | PDF | 2 MB
This volume brings together a collection of papers based on presentations given at the 10th and 11th Fora for Linguistic Sharing, organised by the Young Researchers Group of the Centro de Lingustica da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (CLUNL) and held at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Portugal, on the 27th and 28th November 2015 and on the 25th November 2016, respectively. The papers are authored by young researchers in linguistics and present the results of original research in two broad areas, namely text and discourse linguistics and grammar. This volume also includes a brief history of the Forum for Linguistic Sharing written by its founders, Audria Leal, Carla Teixeira, Isabelle Simes Marques and Matilde Gonalves; a keynote article on text linguistics by Matilde Gonalves; and a keynote article on word formation by Maria do Cu Caetano. Given that it brings together contributions from different, yet complementary, subfields of linguistics, the book will appeal to a broad readership of linguists.

E-BooksGeomechanics from Micro to Macro (2024)

Geomechanics from Micro to Macro (2024)
Free Download Kenichi Soga, Krishna Kumar, Giovanna Biscontin, "Geomechanics from Micro to Macro"
English | 2014 | pages: 1668 | ISBN: 1138027073 | PDF | 656,9 mb
Geomechanics from Micro to Macro contains 268 papers presented at the International Symposium on Geomechanics from Micro and Macro (IS-Cambridge, UK, 1-3 September 2014). The symposium created a forum for the dissemination of new advances in the micro-macro relations of geomaterial behaviour and its modelling. The papers on experimental investigations show findings from micro-scale experiments, non-destructive imaging, element testing (coarse grained materials, fine grained materials and mixtures), physical model tests and field tests. The subjects of the investigations include particle effects (shape, size and grading), partial saturation, creep and aging, fluid-grain coupling, biological and chemical effects, and thermal effects. The papers on discrete based modelling examine pre- and post-failure behaviour, particle shapes and size effects, particle crushing, dynamic behaviour, bonding effects, fracturing and fragmentation, interface behaviour, and fluid-grain coupling. The contributions on continuum based modelling include stress-strain relationships, multi-scale modelling, multiphase modelling, fluid flow modelling, and numerical modelling based on continuum based models and particle based models.
