Treasured Possessions Indigenous Interventions into Cultural and Intellectual Property
Free Download Treasured Possessions: Indigenous Interventions into Cultural and Intellectual Property By Haidy Geismar
2013 | 321 Pages | ISBN: 0822399709 | PDF | 6 MB
What happens when ritual practitioners from a small Pacific nation make an intellectual property claim to bungee jumping? When a German company successfully sues to defend its trademark of a Māori name? Or when UNESCO deems ephemeral sand drawings to be "intangible cultural heritage"? In Treasured Possessions, Haidy Geismar examines how global forms of cultural and intellectual property are being redefined by everyday people and policymakers in two markedly different Pacific nations. The New Hebrides, a small archipelago in Melanesia managed jointly by Britain and France until 1980, is now the independent nation-state of Vanuatu, with a population that is more than 95 percent indigenous. New Zealand, by contrast, is a settler state and former British colony that engages with its entangled Polynesian and British heritage through an ethos of "biculturalism" that is meant to involve an indigenous population of just 15 percent. Alternative notions of property, resources, and heritage-informed by distinct national histories-are emerging in both countries. These property claims are advanced in national and international settings, but they emanate from specific communities and cultural landscapes, and they are grounded in an awareness of ancestral power and inheritance. They reveal intellectual and cultural property to be not only legal constructs but also powerful ways of asserting indigenous identities and sovereignties.

E-BooksInterventions Into Modernist Cultures Poetry From Beyond the Empty Screen

Interventions Into Modernist Cultures Poetry From Beyond the Empty Screen
Free Download Interventions Into Modernist Cultures: Poetry From Beyond the Empty Screen By Amie Elizabeth Parry
2007 | 202 Pages | ISBN: 0822338181 | PDF | 20 MB
Interventions into Modernist Cultures is a comparative analysis of the cultural politics of modernist writing in the United States and Taiwan. Amie Elizabeth Parry argues that the two sites of modernism are linked by their representation or suppression of histories of U.S. imperialist expansion, Cold War neocolonial military presence, and economic influence in Asia. Focusing on poetry, a genre often overlooked in postcolonial theory, she contends that the radically fragmented form of modernist poetic texts is particularly well suited to representing U.S. imperialism and neocolonial modernities.Reading various works by U.S. expatriates Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein, Parry compares the cultural politics of U.S. canonical modernism with alternative representations of temporality, hybridity, erasure, and sexuality in the work of the Taiwanese writers Yü Kwang-chung and Hsia Yü and the Asian American immigrant author Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. Juxtaposing poems by Pound and Yü Kwang-chung, Parry shows how Yü's fragmented, ambivalent modernist form reveals the effects of neocolonialism while Pound denies and obscures U.S. imperialism in Asia, asserting a form of nondevelopmental universalism through both form and theme. Stein appropriates discourses of American modernity and identity to represent nonnormative desire and sexuality, and Parry contrasts this tendency with representations of sexuality in the contemporary experimental poetry of Hsia Yü. Finally, Parry highlights the different uses of modernist forms by Pound in his Cantos-which incorporate a multiplicity of decontextualized and ahistorical voices-and by Cha in her 1982 novel Dictee, a historicized, multilingual work. Parry's sophisticated readings provide a useful critical framework for apprehending how "minor modernisms" illuminate the histories erased by certain canonical modernist texts.

English | ISBN: 1443872504 | 2015 | 605 pages | PDF | 4 MB
This book engages with a wide spectrum of questions and topics related to childrens, adolescents and families difficulties, as well as to epistemological, meta-theoretical, taxonomical, and intervention issues. Particular emphasis is given throughout the book to discussing and suggesting various alternative methods and practices of promoting the potential and capacity of children, families, and schools to deal with various personal and contextual risks and adversities. Most of the contributions brought together in this volume highlight the psychosocial and community and especially school-based and child-centered paradigm focusing not only on the treatment of childrens deficits, but mainly, and above all, on strengthening and sharpening their social, emotional and learning skills and on promoting child, family, and social-school resources and resilience. Integrating various innovative or traditional techniques in a wider psychosocial and resilient inclusive perspective is one of the most promising approaches to childhood disorder and disability. This book presents these fundamentally important issues within the context of up-to-date research on vulnerability and resilience that helps strengthen family and child-school relationships, and will enable professionals, teachers, and parents to deal with a plethora of difficulties and risks in childhood and adolescence.

Sport Psychological Interventions in Competitive Sports
Free Download Jurgen Beckmann, "Sport Psychological Interventions in Competitive Sports"
English | ISBN: 1443865192 | 2015 | 240 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Sport psychological training, an important part of athletes' preparation, can give them the final edge in competition. This book provides a systematic structure for conducting sport psychological interventions that can be followed not only by sport psychologists, but also by athletes and coaches. The authors describe sport psychological measures that are based on scientific knowledge and have proven to be valuable in their applied work. The book is divided into two main parts. Part 1 presents the basic structure for sport psychological interventions and Part 2 focuses on concrete interventions and training measures. Part 1 further addresses the importance of personality factors for sports performance, illustrates how an athlete's personality development can be enhanced, gives basic knowledge about diagnostic tools, and discusses talent selection. The second part of the book describes basic training, which focuses mainly on relaxation techniques, as well as skills training, essential for the stabilisation of athletic performance. Maintaining a balanced recovery-stress state is particularly important for the avoidance of over training. The book illustrates how athletes' stress and recovery levels can be monitored in order to prevent over training. Part 2 further addresses how critical situations in an athlete's career (including, for example, conflicts, career termination, and injuries) are to be handled, presenting various impact interventions, including clinical hypnosis. The final chapter of the book presents a mental toolbox, giving the practitioner an overview that will help to quickly identify a problem, its possible causes, and solutions.
