E-BooksAchieving Anew How New Immigrants Do in American Schools, Jobs, and Neighborhoods

Achieving Anew How New Immigrants Do in American Schools, Jobs, and Neighborhoods
Free Download Achieving Anew: How New Immigrants Do in American Schools, Jobs, and Neighborhoods By Michael J. White; Jennifer E. Glick
2011 | 236 Pages | ISBN: 0871549263 | PDF | 10 MB
Can the recent influx of immigrants successfully enter the mainstream of American life, or will many of them fail to thrive and become part of a permanent underclass?Achieving Anewexamines immigrant life in school, at work, and in communities and demonstrates that recent immigrants and their children do make substantial progress over time, both within and between generations. From policymakers to private citizens, our national conversation on immigration has consistently questioned the country's ability to absorb increasing numbers of foreign nationals-now nearly one million legal entrants per year. Using census data, longitudinal education surveys, and other data, Michael White and Jennifer Glick place their study of new immigrant achievement within a context of recent developments in assimilation theory and policies regulating who gets in and what happens to them upon arrival. They find that immigrant status itself is not an important predictor of educational achievement. First-generation immigrants arrive in the United States with less education than native-born Americans, but by the second and third generation, the children of immigrants are just as successful in school as native-born students with equivalent social and economic background. As with prior studies, the effects of socioeconomic background and family structure show through strongly. On education attainment, race and ethnicity have a strong impact on achievement initially, but less over time.Looking at the labor force, White and Glick find no evidence to confirm the often-voiced worry that recent immigrants and their children are falling behind earlier arrivals. On the contrary, immigrants of more recent vintage tend to catch up to the occupational status of natives more quickly than in the past. Family background, educational preparation, and race/ethnicity all play a role in labor market success, just as they do for the native born, but the offspring of immigrants suffer no disadvantage due to their immigrant origins.New immigrants continue to live in segregated neighborhoods, though with less prevalence than native black-white segregation. Immigrants who arrived in the 1960s are now much less segregated than recent arrivals. Indeed, the authors find that residential segregation declines both within and across generations. Yet black and Mexican immigrants are more segregated from whites than other groups, showing that race and economic status still remain powerful influences on where immigrants live.Although the picture is mixed and the continuing significance of racial factors remains a concern,Achieving Anewprovides compelling reassurance that the recent wave of immigrants is making impressive progress in joining the American mainstream. The process of assimilation is not broken, the advent of a new underclass is not imminent, and the efforts to argue for the restriction of immigration based on these fears are largely mistaken.

E-BooksA Son Is a Son Till He Gets a Wife How Toxic Daughters–in–Law Destroy Families

A Son Is a Son Till He Gets a Wife How Toxic Daughters–in–Law Destroy Families
Free Download A Son Is a Son Till He Gets a Wife: How Toxic Daughters-in-Law Destroy Families By Anne Kathryn Killinger
2015 | 250 Pages | ISBN: 0982633750 | EPUB | 1 MB
I know this is a curious title, and people who have never experienced the rejection of a son at his wife's behest won't understand it. But those who have been through this experience--whose sons have married and turned against them as if they were dirt after all the years of love and care the parents gave them-will rejoice at finding this book and knowing they aren't alone. Actually, the desertion of parents by married sons is not uncommon. Would that it were! Almost every psychologist or counselor with whom I have talked knows of several instances in which it has happened. They speak of the great sorrow and agitation of the parents, mother and father alike, who can't understand why a child has turned against them. ANNE KATHRYN KILLINGER has been a concert pianist, a college professor, a Parisian model, and the wife of a widely known clergyman. She has lived in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Nashville, Birmingham, Paris, and Oxford, and now resides near Washington, DC. She is also the author of An Inner Journey to Christmas and An Inner Journey to Easter, as well as the novels, Pendleton Farm and Rachel Remembers.1.0 out of 5 stars The book title should read: How the Magic Vagina Ruined my Relationship with my Baaaaaby (aka son)May 9, 2012Format: PaperbackAhhhh the pedestal some people put themselves on...According to the author her son is being controlled by his wife's magic vagina. There is so much narcissism spread across the pages of this book its incredible that she cannot read her book and see it herself. But I guess that is what narcissism does...The author needs to realize you have children, raise them to be functioning adults, and when they become adults, as much as you still believe they are your baaaaabies, the relationship should and does change. Had this been a healthy change in the relationship, she would still have her son in her life. She may have a nice relationship with her daughter-in-law. But it really sounds like the author just can't cut the cord and expects to still be raising her son even though he is already a grown man. When your child becomes an adult, you are still his/her mother, BUT you are now no longer an authority figure. Some people cannot give up their role as authority figure and think they are the matriarch and patriarch and all their children and grandchildren are under their rule. This is wrong.According to the author, it just CANNOT be anything about her that caused this turn in her son's attitude--it MUST be his wife's magic vagina!!
