This book offers a concise survey of Western Civilization from the Stone Age through the fall of the last Western Roman Emperor in AD 476. Each of the three sections chronicle a critical epoch in human history. Section I encompasses man's ascent from barbarism to civilization in the Ancient Near East; Section II witnesses the development of Western Civilization in Ancient Greece; and Section III catalogs the failed attempt to build the West's first "nation-state" in Ancient Rome. Human foibles are abundantly portrayed but so too is the ascent of humankind.

E-BooksDissonance Auditory Aesthetics in Ancient Greece

Dissonance Auditory Aesthetics in Ancient Greece
Free Download Dissonance: Auditory Aesthetics in Ancient Greece By Sean Alexander Gurd
2016 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 0823269655 | PDF | 19 MB
In the four centuries leading up to the death of Euripides, Greek singers, poets, and theorists delved deeply into auditory experience. They charted its capacity to develop topologies distinct from those of the other senses; contemplated its use as a communicator of information; calculated its power to express and cause extreme emotion. They made sound too, artfully and self-consciously creating songs and poems that reveled in sonorousness. Dissonance reveals the commonalities between ancient Greek auditory art and the concerns of contemporary sound studies, avant-garde music, and aesthetics, making the argument that "classical" Greek song and drama were, in fact, an early European avant-garde, a proto-exploration of the aesthetics of noise. The book thus develops an alternative to that romantic ideal which sees antiquity as a frozen and silent world.

English | ISBN: 1350407771 | 2024 | 368 pages | EPUB, PDF | 15 MB + 258 MB
Daniel Orrells examines the ways in which the ancient world was visualized for Enlightenment readers, and reveals how antiquarian scholarship emerged as the principal technology for envisioning ancient Greek culture, at a time when very few people could travel to Greece which was still part of the Ottoman Empire. Offering a fresh account of the rise of antiquarianism in the 18th century, Orrells shows how this period of cultural progression was important for the invention of classical studies. In particular, the main focus of this book is on the visionary experimentalism of antiquarian book production, especially in relation to the contentious nature of ancient texts.

The Geography of Greece

English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031298187 | 521 Pages | PDF (True) | 78 MB
During the last few years, Greece has become a subject of increasing attention worldwide. Once praised for its ability to innovate and reform during the EU integration process, applauded for its remarkable job in managing the 2004 Olympics, the country fell into a financial crisis of unprecedented magnitude in 2008. Much has been said on this matter, and amid the morass of information a staggering number of untruths have been disseminated. In fact, the challenges of vulnerability and the paradigms of adaptation go way beyond finance and economy in Greece. Mega-fires, earthquakes, landslides and floods, migrations, sociopolitical upheavals, and armed conflicts generate emergency situations repeatedly. Because of its bridging role between natural and social sciences, geography can provide insights into the entire breadth of hazardous and chaotic events driving adaptation and change. Against all these threats, Greece has developed an enhanced resilience capacity. The purpose of this book is to help unravel the complexities of a fascinating country beyond clichés.This book is intended for students, researchers, scholars, and engineers interested in geography, land planning, urban studies, and environmental management. The crises issue intended as a guideline allows widening the audience to include the media, governmental and non-governmental agencies, and the public at large.

Scuba Diving Practices in Greece A Historical Ethnography of Technology, Self, Body, and Nature
Free Download Manolis Tzanakis, "Scuba Diving Practices in Greece: A Historical Ethnography of Technology, Self, Body, and Nature "
English | ISBN: 3031488385 | 2023 | 325 pages | EPUB, PDF | 16 MB + 7 MB
This book provides a historical-sociological analysis of recreational scuba diving practices. Starting from a national case study, Greece, the book analyzes the gradually evolving global institutional arrangements of this version of underwater recreational activities. Based on the author's experience as a former diving instructor and on an historical and sociological research of scuba diving in Greece, the book examines the stages of institutionalization of scuba diving as a leisure practice on a global scale, from 1945 to the present day. It combines two traditions: the phenomenological approach of underwater multisensory embodied experience and tourism studies. The two main research questions that the project answers are (a) how scuba diving has historically been shaped as a leisure activity, (b) how has underwater experience been conceptually shaped as a leisure activity. This case is an excellent example for exploring the relationship between society, technology, body and modern practices of self in the late modernity world, under a phenomenological and historical perspective.

Blitzkrieg in the Balkans and Greece 1941
Free Download Bob Carruthers, "Blitzkrieg in the Balkans and Greece 1941"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 1781581223, 1781581231 | EPUB | pages: 192 | 6.9 mb
The German campaigns in the Balkans, Greece and the seizure of Crete are detailed in this long neglected account of the campaign as described from the German point of view. Out of print since the fifties, this new edition is edited and introduced by Emmy Award winning author and historian Bob Carruthers. Based mainly on original German records and post-war military writings by veterans including Dr. Helmut Greiner, General Burkharth Mueller-Hillebrand, and General Hans von Greiffenberg, this fascinating account encompasses the lessons and conclusions drawn from the same German sources. The work of preparing this study in English, which consisted of translating basic German records and manuscripts, performing additional research, expanding and then rewriting the narratives with an eye for continuity and factual data, was done chiefly by Mr. George E. Blau of the Foreign Studies Branch, Special Studies Division, Office of the Chief of Military History. In the process of presenting the material, every effort has been made to give a balanced account of German strategy and operations in the Balkans during the spring of 1941.

The book takes a look at the experiences of Greece, the country most shaken by the severe financial crisis of the last years. The book describes the strong influence of the crisis on ageing, health and social relations and the challenges to which Greek institutions and citizens respond. The authors represent the multidisciplinary field of economics, social policy, health and family research and civil society in Greece.
