Interpreting musical gestures, topics, and tropes Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert
Free Download Interpreting musical gestures, topics, and tropes : Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert By Beethoven, Ludwig van; Hatten, Robert S.; Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus; Schubert, Franz
2017 | 358 Pages | ISBN: 0253030072 | PDF | 31 MB
This book continues to develop the semiotic theory of musical meaning presented in Robert S. Hatten's first book, Musical Meaning in Beethoven. In addition to expanding theories of markedness, topics, and tropes, Hatten offers a fresh contribution to the understanding of musical gestures, as grounded in biological, psychological, cultural, and music-stylistic competencies. By focusing on gestures, topics, tropes, and their interaction in the music of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, Hatten demonstrates the power and elegence of synthetic structures and emergent meanings within a changing Viennese Classical style. -- from back cover.

Free Download Thiemo Breyer, "Diachronic Perspectives on Embodiment and Technology: Gestures and Artefacts "
English | ISBN: 3031500849 | 2024 | 193 pages | EPUB, PDF | 4 MB + 8 MB
This book investigates the relationships between gestures and artefacts theoretically and historically, by analyzing different phenomena stemming from a variety of fields such as robotics, archaeology, gesture studies, anthropology, philosophy, and gestural practices like choreography, music performance, and composition. It underlines how embodiment and technology change the interplay between maker and artefact over time and appeals to students and researchers in these fields. Its goal is to enable the reader to understand that the recurring topics and questions as well as multi-level similarities are by no means accidental, but can best be understood if one pays attention to the intertwinements of materiality and cognition, praxis and techne.

E-BooksAuthorising History Gestures of Authorship in Fourteenth–century English Historiography

Authorising History Gestures of Authorship in Fourteenth–century English Historiography
Free Download Nicole Nyffenegger, "Authorising History: Gestures of Authorship in Fourteenth-century English Historiography"
English | ISBN: 1443848190 | 2013 | 230 pages | PDF | 1117 KB
This book discusses the strategies and rhetorical means by which four authors of Middle English verse historiography seek to authorise their works and themselves. Paying careful attention to the texts, it traces the ways in which authors inscribe their fictional selves and seek to give authority to their constructions of history. It further investigates how the authors position themselves in relation to their task of writing history, their sources and their audiences. This study provides new insights into the processes of the appropriation of history around 1300 by social groups whose lack of the relevant languages, before this 'anglicising' of the dominant Latin and French history constructions, prevented their access to the history of the British isles. -Wilhelm Busse, University of Dusseldorf

E-BooksLooking Beyond Words Gestures in the Pedagogy of Second Languages in Multilingual Canada

Looking Beyond Words Gestures in the Pedagogy of Second Languages in Multilingual Canada
Free Download Giuliana Salvato, "Looking Beyond Words: Gestures in the Pedagogy of Second Languages in Multilingual Canada"
English | ISBN: 1443880124 | 2015 | 185 pages | PDF | 830 KB
This book is a result of the growing number of insights found in recent research on gesture studies and language acquisition, which have renewed the attention of scholars in gesture functions and meanings in communication and language learning. Observation of the participation of both gesture and speech in the formulation of meaning has revealed that communication is typically multimodal. This perspective has produced engrossing research questions, particularly in contexts where the combination of languages and cultures is complex and diversified. Competence in multiple languages and in different semiotic systems inevitably impacts the way in which people interact and learn languages. Given its status as a country of immigration, Canada provides such a context for this study. This book discusses the changes that the literature on gesture studies can help implement in current practices of language pedagogy. By including gesture as a nonverbal dimension of language and as a means for language acquisition, it provides a contrast to those traditions that have viewed gesture as a marginal aspect of communication and language learning. In addition, this book offers the results of three research studies in Italian language classes in Canada, showing that gesture enables a multimodal approach in language pedagogy and a richer experience for both teachers and learners.

English | 1994 | pages: 240 | ISBN: 0224101390, 0224039695 | EPUB | 18,2 mb
The first book to bring together the many different everyday gestures that are used all over the world. The result is a fascinating reference book of over 600 different gestures from Europe, the Middle East, North & South America and the Far East. The book is arranged alphabetically under the part of the body used with Meaning, Action, Background and Locality and each gesture is illustrated with a line drawing. The World Guide to Gestures complements Desmond Morris's bestsellers Manwatching and Bodywatching.

Diagrams and Gestures Mathematics, Philosophy, and Linguistics
Free Download Diagrams and Gestures: Mathematics, Philosophy, and Linguistics
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031291107 | 440 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 78 MB
Drawing a line, and then another, and another. Go back from the lines to the movements they capture and see gestures in them: not spatial displacements, but modes of knowledge that pass through the exercise of the body. Discovering something new in a gesture: the line that contracts into a point or the point that expands into a zone, perhaps sinking into a hole. Thus experiencing a diagram: a becoming other inscribed in the novelty of the gesture and in the changes of the forms it shapes. This and much more is discussed in the essays gathered in Diagrams and Gestures. Resulting from trans-disciplinary work between mathematicians, philosophers, linguists and semioticians, the volume delivers an up-to-date account of the most valuable research on the connections between gesture and diagram. As one of the most important themes in contemporary thought, the study of these connections poses a challenge for the future: to elaborate a theory that is equal to new and stimulating research methodologies. We call this theory a philosophy of diagrammatic gestures.
