Mit seinem Primer romancero gitano verbindet García Lorca die Form der traditionellen spanischen Romances mit den poetischen Bestrebungen der Avantgarde zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Dieses Spannungsfeld zwischen Schlichtheit und Moderne spiegelt sich in keiner der bisherigen Übersetzungen wider. Während Erwin Walter Palm und Gustav Siebenmann die Romances in rhythmisch freien Versen wiedergeben, haben Enrique Beck und nach ihm Martin von Koppenfels versucht, ihre Übersetzungen nach den Vorgaben Herders auszurichten. Sie begriffen das von Herder eingeführte, streng alternierende Versmaß als den echten Romanzenton und stülpten ihn dem Romancero über. Diese Priorisierung der Metrik führte, neben zahlreichen Übersetzungsfehlern, zu beträchtlichen stilistischen und inhaltlichen Veränderungen. Darüber hinaus schildert die Autorin die unterschiedliche Entwicklung des spanischen Romance und der deutschen Romanze, die vielseitigen Begabungen Lorcas und deren Einfluss auf die Abfassung des Romancero sowie die stilistischen Merkmale der damaligen Avantgarde.
