Through most of eight hundred years, Somerled of Argyll has been variously denounced as an intractable rebel against his rightful king and esteemed as the honoured ancestor of the later medieval Lord of the Isles, but he can be recognised now as a much more complex figure of major prominence in twelfth-century Scotland and of truly landmark significance in the long history of the Gael.

E-BooksNorse-Gaelic Contacts in a Viking World Studies in the Literature and History of Norway, Iceland, Ireland, and the Isle of Man

Norse-Gaelic Contacts in a Viking World Studies in the Literature and History of Norway, Iceland, Ireland, and the Isle of Man
Norse-Gaelic Contacts in a Viking World: Studies in the Literature and History of Norway, Iceland, Ireland, and the Isle of Man By Colmán Etchingham, Jón Viðar Sigurðsson, Máire Ní Mhaonaigh, Elizabeth Ashman Rowe
2019 | 452 Pages | ISBN: 2503579027 | PDF | 4 MB
This multi-disciplinary volume draws on the combined expertise of specialists in the history and literature of medieval Ireland, Iceland, Norway, and Scotland to shed new light on the interplay of Norse and Gaelic literary traditions. Through four detailed case-studies, which examine the Norwegian 'Konungs skuggsjá', the Icelandic 'Njáls saga' and 'Landnámabók', and the Gaelic text 'Baile Suthach Sith Emhna', the volume explores the linguistic, cultural, and political contacts that existed between Norse and Gaelic speakers in the High Middle Ages, and examines the impetus behind these texts, including oral tradition, transfer of written sources, and authorial adaptation and invention. Crucially, these texts are not only examined as literary products of the thirteenth century, but also as repositories of older historical traditions, and the authors seek to explore these wider historical contexts, as well as analyse how and why historical and literary material was transmitted. The volume contains English translations of key extracts and also provides a detailed discussion of sources and methodologies to ensure that this milestone of scholarship is accessible to both students and subject-specialists.

E-BooksAtlantic Outlooks on Being at Home Gaelic Place-Lore and the Construction of a Sense of Place in Medieval Iceland

Atlantic Outlooks on Being at Home Gaelic Place-Lore and the Construction of a Sense of Place in Medieval Iceland
Atlantic Outlooks on Being at Home: Gaelic Place-Lore and the Construction of a Sense of Place in Medieval Iceland By Matthias Egeler
2018 | 324 Pages | ISBN: 9514111257 | PDF | 28 MB
Much of both Icelandic and medieval Irish literature is, in one way or another, storytelling about places, reflecting a deep engagement with the concept of 'place' and the creation of a 'sense of place'. This book takes as its starting point the shared interest that Icelandic and Irish storytelling have in 'place' and asks whether the medieval Icelandic sense of place, as reflected in Icelandic narrative culture, has been influenced by the close contacts that existed during the Viking Age between Iceland and the Gaelic-speaking world of Ireland and Scotland. In attempting to answer this question, the book contributes to the long-standing debate about Gaelic influences in Icelandic culture, the much more recent discourse on the spatiality of medieval Icelandic literature and storytelling, and the cultural history of the Icelandic Settlement Period. Obliquely, the findings of the book may even shed light on the origins of Icelandic saga literature. Along the way, it also offers insights on a number of general points of spatial theory as well as, in particular, on two medieval Icelandic texts that are especially place-focused: 'Landnámabók', the 'Book of Settlements', and 'Eyrbyggja saga', the 'Saga of the Inhabitants of Eyr'.
