Originally published in 1990 and drawing on extensive research, this book provides an evaluation of the impact of the growth of home ownership in the UK, and of the claims and counter-claims made for its social significance. The book examines critically the evidence for and against the proposition that mass home ownership is contributing towards a more equal society. Wide-ranging in its coverage, the book discusses the changing nature and role of home ownership, wealth accumulation and housing, the relationship between social class and housing tenure, and policy development.

E-BooksFiscal Fragmentation in Decentralized Countries Subsidiarity, Solidarity and Asymmetry

Fiscal Fragmentation in Decentralized Countries Subsidiarity, Solidarity and Asymmetry
Fiscal Fragmentation in Decentralized Countries: Subsidiarity, Solidarity and Asymmetry By Richard M. Bird (editor), Robert D. Ebel (editor)
2007 | 456 Pages | ISBN: 1845424026 | PDF | 13 MB
Most countries, developed and developing, are fiscally decentralized with regional and local governments of varying importance. In many of these countries, some of these sub-national governments differ substantially from others in terms of wealth, ethnic, religious, or linguistic composition. This book considers how fiscal arrangements may strengthen or weaken national solidarity and the effectiveness with which public services are provided. In particular, the nation's ability to cope with changes created by decentralization is explored. Through a series of case studies, the countries of Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, China, Germany, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Russia, Spain and Switzerland are examined with an eye to how their public finances are structured and how these arrangements act to promote equilibrium or turmoil in the nation state. This is the first detailed consideration of the link between asymmetry and intergovernmental finance, as well as the first detailed study of how asymmetrical fiscal arrangements work in practice in a variety of different countries. Policy analysts concerned with intergovernmental finance and/or political legitimacy issues will find this synthesis of interest, as will readers concerned with the public policy of the many fiscally fragmented countries profiled here.

Contested Regime Collisions Norm Fragmentation in World Society
Kerstin Blome, Andreas Fischer-Lescano, Hannah Franzki, "Contested Regime Collisions: Norm Fragmentation in World Society"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 1107126576 | PDF | pages: 396 | 3.0 mb
This collection of innovative contributions to the study of legal pluralism in international and transnational law focuses on collisions and conflicts between an increasing number of institutional and legal orders, which can manifest themselves in contradictory decisions or mutual obstruction. It combines theoretical approaches from a variety of disciplines with theoretically informed case studies in order to further understanding of the phenomenon of regime collisions. By bringing together scholars of international law, legal philosophy, the social sciences and postcolonial studies from Latin America, the United States and Europe, the volume demonstrates that collisions between various institutional and legal orders affect different regions in different ways, highlights some of their problematic consequences, and identifies methods of addressing such collisions in a more productive manner.

E-BooksSocial Fragmentation and the Decline of American Democracy The End of the Social Contract

Social Fragmentation and the Decline of American Democracy The End of the Social Contract
Robert E. Denton Jr., Ben Voth, "Social Fragmentation and the Decline of American Democracy: The End of the Social Contract"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 3319439219, 3319439235 | 205 pages | True PDF | 1.9 MB
This book explores the social and political implications of what the authors identify as the decline of the social contract in America and the rise of a citizenry that has become self-centered, entitled, and independent. For nearly two decades, America has been in a "cultural war" over moral values and social issues, becoming a divided nation geographically, politically, socially, and morally. We are witnessing the decline of American Democracy, the authors argue, resulting from the erosion of the idea of the social contract. Especially since the "baby boomers," each successive generation has emphasized personal license to the exclusion of service, social integration, and the common good. With the social contact, the larger general will becomes the means of establishing reciprocal rights and duties, privileges, and responsibilities as a basis of the state. The balkanization of America has changed the role of government from one of oversight to one of dependency, where individual freedom and responsibility are sacrificed for group equality. This book examines the conditions of this social fragmentation, and offers ideas of an American Renaissance predicated on communicative idealism.

E-BooksHuman Figuration and Fragmentation in Preclassic Mesoamerica From Figurines to Sculpture

Human Figuration and Fragmentation in Preclassic Mesoamerica From Figurines to Sculpture
Julia Guernsey, "Human Figuration and Fragmentation in Preclassic Mesoamerica: From Figurines to Sculpture"
English | ISBN: 1108478999 | 2020 | 278 pages | PDF | 29 MB
In this book, Julia Guernsey examines the relationship between human figuration, fragmentation, bodily divisibility, personhood, and community in ancient Mesoamerica. Contending that representation of the human body in the pre-classic period gradually became a privileged act, she argues that human figuration as well as the fragmentation of both human representations and human bodies reveals ancient conceptualizations of personhood and the relationship of individual to the community. Considering ceramic figurines and stone sculpture together with archaeological data, Guernsey weaves together evidence and ideas drawn from art history, archaeology, and anthropology to construct a rich, cultural history of Mesoamerican practices of figuration and fragmentation. A methodologically innovative study, her book has ramifications for scholars working in Mesoamerica and, more generally, those interested in the significance of human representation.
