E-BooksThe Female Characters of Fragmentary Greek Tragedy

The Female Characters of Fragmentary Greek Tragedy
The Female Characters of Fragmentary Greek Tragedy By P. J. Finglass; Lyndsay Coo
2020 | 300 Pages | ISBN: 1108495141 | PDF | 2 MB
How were women represented in Greek tragedy? This question lies at the heart of much modern scholarship on ancient drama, yet it has typically been approached using evidence drawn only from the thirty-two tragedies that survive complete - neglecting tragic fragments, especially those recently discovered and often very substantial fragmentary papyri from plays that had been thought lost. Drawing on the latest research on both gender in tragedy and on tragic fragments, the essays in this volume examine this question from a fresh perspective, shedding light on important mythological characters such as Pasiphae, Hypsipyle, and Europa, on themes such as violence, sisterhood, vengeance, and sex, and on the methodology of a discipline which needs to take fragmentary evidence to heart in order to gain a fuller understanding of ancient tragedy. All Greek is translated to ensure wide accessibility.

E-BooksPerforming Queer Female Identity on Screen A Critical Analysis of Five Recent Films

Performing Queer Female Identity on Screen A Critical Analysis of Five Recent Films
Performing Queer Female Identity on Screen: A Critical Analysis of Five Recent Films By Jamie Stuart
2008 | 235 Pages | ISBN: 0786439718 | PDF | 19 MB
Film audiences have grown used to seeing female characters in "performance roles," singing or dancing on stages in nightclubs, musical arenas, or theaters--performing their "femaleness" for the fictional audience as well as the film viewing audience. But queer women in film perform on yet another level. In addition to performing their gender for the world, they also perform their sexuality for either a general or an "insider" audience, in ways that can be read to establish a queer visibility, to establish a sense of community, or to show romantic lesbian interest. This work examines "performance spaces" for lesbian identities in films, evaluating how queer femaleness is signified in contemporary cinema. It studies five films in particular: When Night Is Falling, Better Than Chocolate, Tipping the Velvet, Slaves to the Underground, and Prey for Rock and Roll. Through close textual analysis, evaluations of the conditions under which each film was produced and received, and dozens of audience surveys, it reveals much about both the story worlds of the films and the ways that queer women react to and feel about them.

Author and Narrator: Fern Brady
Scottish comedian Fern Brady was told she couldn't be autistic because she'd had loads of boyfriends and is good at eye contact. In this frank and surreal memoir, she delivers a sharp and often hilarious portrait of neurodivergence and living unmasked.
After reading about autism in her teens, Fern Brady knew instinctively that she had it-autism explained her sensory issues, her meltdowns, her inability to pick up on social cues-and she told her doctor as much. But it took until she was thirty-four for her to get diagnosed.

E-BooksFemale Genital MutilationCutting Global Zero Tolerance Policy and Diverse Responses from African and Asian Local Commu

Female Genital MutilationCutting Global Zero Tolerance Policy and Diverse Responses from African and Asian Local Commu
Kyoko Nakamura, "Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: Global Zero Tolerance Policy and Diverse Responses from African and Asian Local Commu"
English | ISBN: 9811967229 | 2023 | 210 pages | PDF | 4 MB
This open access book shows how the adoption of global justice, such as eradication of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), has given rise to controversy, resistance, and transformation at the national, regional, and grass-roots levels in African and Asian countries where FGM/C has been practiced. It provides readers with up-to-date information about the effects of the campaign to eradicate FGM/C and the present situation of those countries, to which preceding books on FGM/C have scarcely referred. Adopting "zero tolerance" as a policy of eradication, WHO and other UN agencies have opposed any type of FGM/C, and many African countries have criminalized the practice. Although the campaign is based on the human rights discourse which is shared globally, the controversies concerning eradication of FGM/C on the national level and the responses of communities on the local level in those countries are diverse and complicated. Various actors such as NGOs, government officials, religious leaders, medical workers, and local inhabitants are embroiled and negotiate with each other concerning its eradication.

E-BooksAgency, Loneliness, and the Female Protagonist in the Victorian Novel

Agency, Loneliness, and the Female Protagonist in the Victorian Novel
Marie Hendry, "Agency, Loneliness, and the Female Protagonist in the Victorian Novel"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 1527527794 | PDF | pages: 118 | 4.0 mb
Many female Victorian-era heroines find themselves expressing a form of loneliness directly connected to their lack of agency. Loneliness is defined by a lack, and it is this that is prevalent to these characters discussion of the social structures that define their lives. As there is no way to easily discuss a lack of agency without stating that there is something missing from the root agency, loneliness is an expression of missing components. This work analyses this lack found in loneliness as a trope to discuss a social lack. Many novels are crucial to this discussion, and this book focuses on Charlotte Brontës Villette (1853), Anne Brontës Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848), George Eliots The Mill on the Floss (1860), Thomas Hardys Tess of the dUrbervilles (1892), Florence Marryats The Blood of the Vampire (1897) and Ella Hepworth Dixons The Story of a Modern Woman (1894) to trace the evolution of the double use of lack in the nineteenth-century novel.
