E-BooksThe Event, the Subject, and the Artwork Into the Twenty–First Century

The Event, the Subject, and the Artwork Into the Twenty–First Century
Free Download Ann McCulloch, "The Event, the Subject, and the Artwork: Into the Twenty-First Century"
English | ISBN: 1443870692 | 2015 | 240 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Partly guided by Alain Badiou's controversial Century and its interpretation of the events and art of the last century, this book opens debates about these for the twenty-first century. This book examines the extent to which such debates can be applied to the first decades of the twenty-first century and the extent to which analyses of events and subjectivities in the twentieth century can be re-thought from the perspective of this century. This book is also partly guided by Gilles Deleuze's construal of the event as a synthesis of forces, not a happening, but something that has become actual. An event, therefore, is always there in its potentiality, but may not be recognized at the time of its occurrence. This collection combines essays responding to seemingly datable events, such as the memorialised city of Hiroshima, the coup d'etat in Fiji, or the aftermath of Vietnam, as well as the more pervasive emergence of managerialism and the anti-psychiatry movement. At the same time, this book specifically explores the event's relationship with art and its subject in the sense of both what and who is depicted. The collection engages in debates over the extent to which modernism is an unfinished event; avant-garde moments herald events; socio-political events are mediated in and by artworks; and artistic responses to events and subjects come to represent temporal ruptures and rifts, if not harbingers of an indescribable future.

E-BooksThe Cobra Event

The Cobra Event
Free Download The Cobra Event By Richard Preston
1999 | 456 Pages | ISBN: 0752817124 | EPUB | 1 MB
SUMMARY:The Cobra Event is set in motion one spring morning in New York City, when a seventeen-year-old student wakes up feeling vaguely ill. Hours later she is having violent seizures, blood is pouring out of her nose, and she has begun a hideous process of self-cannibalization. Soon, other gruesome deaths of a similar nature have been discovered, and the Centers for Disease Control sends a forensic pathologist to investigate. What she finds precipitates a federal crisis. The details of this story are fictional, but they are based on a scrupulously thorough inquiry into the history of biological weapons and their use by civilian and military terrorists. Richard Preston's sources include members of the FBI and the United States military, public health officials, intelligence officers in foreign governments, and scientists who have been involved in the testing of strategic bioweapons. The accounts of what they have seen and what they expect to happen are chilling. The Cobra Event is a dramatic, heart-stopping account of a very real threat, told with the skill and authority that made Preston's The Hot Zone an internationally acclaimed bestseller. From the Trade Paperback edition.

E-BooksThe Oxford Handbook of Event Structure

The Oxford Handbook of Event Structure
Free Download Robert Truswell, "The Oxford Handbook of Event Structure "
English | ISBN: 0199685312 | 2019 | 736 pages | EPUB | 9 MB
This handbook deals with research into the nature of events, and how we use language to describe events. The study of event structure over the past 60 years has been one of the most successful areas of lexical semantics, uniting insights from morphology and syntax, lexical and compositional semantics, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence to develop insightful theories of events and event descriptions. This volume provides accessible introductions to major topics and ongoing debates in event structure research, exploring what events are, how we perceive them, how we reason with them, and the role they play in the organization of grammar and discourse. The chapters are divided into four parts: the first covers metaphysical issues related to events; the second is concerned with the relationship between event structure and grammar; the third is a series of crosslinguistic case studies; and the fourth deals with links to cognitive science and artificial intelligence more broadly.

Reciprocal Causality in an Event–Filled World
Free Download Joseph A. Bracken S.J., "Reciprocal Causality in an Event-Filled World"
English | ISBN: 1978709781 | 2022 | 168 pages | EPUB, PDF | 309 KB + 3 MB
Given the current sense of helplessness in dealing with environmental change and other urgent issues, a new world view is needed that emphasizes the unique contribution that individual citizens can make to the common good as opposed to their individual needs and desires. In a recent encyclical on the environment, Pope Francis set forth reasons from Scripture and Church teaching for this shift in perspective, but he did not provide a philosophically based foundation for this change of heart. To fill that gap, Joseph Bracken examines key writings of process-oriented philosophers like Henri Bergson and Alfred North Whitehead along with systems-oriented thinkers like Ludwig von Bertalanffy and Ervin Laszlo to create a systems-oriented understanding of the God-world relation.

E-BooksNeoliberalism, Oligarchy and Politics of the Event

Neoliberalism, Oligarchy and Politics of the Event
Free Download arko Pai, "Neoliberalism, Oligarchy and Politics of the Event"
English | ISBN: 1527544788 | 2020 | 250 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Based on insight into Foucaults lectures on biopolitics, which consider the notion of neoliberalism for all future relationships between individuals and society, and the state and the economy, this book shows that the oligarchic model of politics and culture management today is a result of the rise and fall of mass political movements. The ideologies of the end of the twentieth century with which neo-liberalism perfectly establishes a balance are reflected in the combination of technoscience, rational choice and individualism. In this way, the rule is reversed into a cybernetic market as a management model. Today, transnational corporations control the states and their political subjects, with sovereignty rendered an illusion by the obsolescence of the modern project. Since the post-imperial order in the 21st century requires the expansion of total power rather than the fragmentation of freedom, it is necessary to explore the hybrid relationship between economics and politics. The corporate system of activities denotes a subject to all forms of organization of the state and society, from the trade unions to the universities, from institutionalized religion to social welfare and sport. The consequence of this can be seen in the disappearance of the essence of society. This book investigates the logic of world-historical progress from the cybernetic governance system and the new way of legitimizing capitalism in the 21st century to all forms of suspension of fundamental ideas which have marked the politics of modernity.
