E-BooksFailures East and West Cultural Encounters between East Asia and Europe

Failures East and West Cultural Encounters between East Asia and Europe
Free Download Ralf Hertel, "Failures East and West: Cultural Encounters between East Asia and Europe "
English | ISBN: 1399500511 | 2023 | 208 pages | PDF | 7 MB
Often, the story of encounters between Asia and the West has been told as one of success, of cross-fertilization, reciprocal stimulation and an exchange of commodities and knowledge. Yet, the history of East-West encounters is riddled with prominent examples of misunderstandings, ignorance, unrealistic expectations or unbridgeable cultural differences. Bringing together scholars working across Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, English Studies and French Studies, this book presents new perspectives on such instances by theorizing epistemologies of failure. Providing examples from different periods and disciplines, it reveals how culturally informed expectations and biases, performative and linguistic practices and imaginative horizons specific to the cultures involved shape notions of failure and success. Case studies range from first encounters in the early modern period to contemporary novels and focus on actual or imaginary encounters between East Asia and Western European cultures.

E-BooksThe Allure of Empire American Encounters with Asians in the Age of Transpacific Expansion and Exclusion

The Allure of Empire American Encounters with Asians in the Age of Transpacific Expansion and Exclusion
Free Download The Allure of Empire: American Encounters with Asians in the Age of Transpacific Expansion and Exclusion by Chris Suh
English | March 17, 2023 | ISBN: 0197631614, 0197631622 | True EPUB/PDF | 316 pages | 14.3/21.96 MB
The Allure of Empire traces how American ideas about race in the Pacific were made and remade on the imperial stage before World War II. Following the Russo-Japanese War, the United States cultivated an amicable relationship with Japan based on the belief that it was a "progressive" empire akin to its own. Even as the two nations competed for influence in Asia and clashed over immigration issues in the American West, the mutual respect for empire sustained their transpacific cooperation until Pearl Harbor, when both sides disavowed their history of collaboration and cast each other as incompatible enemies.

E-BooksRethinking Asian Tourism Culture, Encounters and Local Response

Rethinking Asian Tourism Culture, Encounters and Local Response
Free Download Victor T. King, "Rethinking Asian Tourism: Culture, Encounters and Local Response"
English | ISBN: 1443864587 | 2014 | 400 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Rethinking Asian Tourism addresses some of the latest developments in on-going tourism research in Southeast Asia and the wider Asia region (encompassing, in geographical terms, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea). It examines many of the emerging, as well as established, themes and issues in Asian tourism and promotes the development of critical scholarship within Asia to overcome Anglo-Western ethnocentrism in tourism studies of the region. There is some attention to such familiar concepts as authenticity, commoditisation, culture, heritage, and host and guests, but more especially to the diversification of phenomena which traditionally would not have been included within the parameters of tourism studies: retirees and long-stays, gastronomy, family-based leisure, popular culture, and local branding. Above all, the book addresses and develops a conceptual understanding from a multidisciplinary perspective of the character, experiences, encounters, perceptions and motivations of local, national and intra-regional tourism rather than basing concepts, perspectives, emphases and analyses on Western-Asian interactions and on transformations in the West. In this respect it encourages a shift in emphasis towards 'Asianising' our understanding of Asian tourism. This is one of the first volumes on Asian tourism written primarily by Asians and, as such, provides them with the opportunity to express their concerns, interests and priorities, rather than depending on the analyses and interpretations of those from outside the region. It also enables a deconstruction of the field of tourism studies, acknowledging that it is an open-ended, shifting, fluid and complex category of encounters and events generated by the processes of physical mobility.

Intellect Encounters Faith––a Synthesis A Festschrift in Honor of Jay Harold Ellens, Ph.d
Free Download John Tracy Greene, "Intellect Encounters Faith-a Synthesis: A Festschrift in Honor of Jay Harold Ellens, Ph.d."
English | ISBN: 1443863041 | 2014 | 325 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Intellect Encounters Faith: A Synthesis is a Festschrift crafted to honor a renaissance man: a literary tribute to Dr. Jay Harold Ellens that has been long overdue. While attending the 2014 International Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature at the University of Vienna (July 6-10), Professor Ellens celebrated his eighty-second birthday. He is still a most-engaged and active scholar, practicing clinical psychologist, and military chaplain (with the rank of Colonel). He publishes widely in Second Temple Judaism, and works that are on the cusp between religious studies/history of religions and psychology, as well as spirituality. He is a marvel to behold and is an excellent, indefatigable Vorbild for both professional colleagues, as well as an ever-growing number of aspiring scholars he mentors. He is the model of the modern peripatetic scholar. The Festschrift acknowledges the major foci of Professor Doctor Ellens' own work: Psychology, Religious Literature, and Military History. Moreover, there are included in this volume several personal reflections by some of his friends and colleagues, also. The essays/chapters contained herein are works of deep and broad scholarship. Yet, they are deeply personal tributes to a master pedagogue who has touched many lives in many walks of life. All, however, reflect Professor Ellens' influence on the contributors as if one is looking at them through their writings and seeing him. The reader will find this a most informative volume, and will return to it often as an up-to-date reference work on trends in religious studies, psychology, psychology of religion(s), and even the archaeology of the Second Jewish Temple period. One will discover between these covers a rare and valuable reference work that honors a rare, prolific, and generous man.

E-BooksEncounters with the Ottoman Miniature Contemporary Readings of an Imperial Art

Encounters with the Ottoman Miniature Contemporary Readings of an Imperial Art
Free Download Begüm Özden Firat, "Encounters with the Ottoman Miniature: Contemporary Readings of an Imperial Art "
English | ISBN: 1780763913 | 2015 | 272 pages | PDF | 13 MB
The dominant form of Ottoman pictorial art until the eighteenth century, miniatures have traditionally been studied as reflecting the socio-historical contexts, aesthetic concerns and artistic tastes of the era within which they were produced. Begum Ozden Fyrat proposes instead a radical re-reading of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century miniatures in the light of contemporary critical theory, highlighting the viewer's encounter with the image. Encounters with the Ottoman Miniature employs contemporary concepts such as the gaze, frame/framing, reading and re-reading, drawing on thinkers such as Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes and Gilles Deleuze to establish the vibrant cultural agency of miniature paintings. With analysis that illuminates both the social and political situations in which these miniatures were painted as well as emphasising the miniature's contemporary relevance, Firat presents an important new re-imagining of this art form.

E-BooksEncounters with Jesus The Man in His Place and Time

Encounters with Jesus The Man in His Place and Time
Free Download Encounters with Jesus: The Man in His Place and Time By Ariana Destro, Mauro Pesce
2011 | 276 Pages | ISBN: 0800698452 | PDF | 7 MB
What was there in Jesus person, behavior, and words that prompted not only much enthusiasm but also much hostility? This compelling portrait of the man Jesus of Nazareth by two pioneers of the anthropological study of early Christianity answers this vital question. They bring the fruit of years of scholarship to bear on a radical figure in Roman Galilee and on his encounters with others and the movement those encounters inspired. They give close attention to the everyday realities that shaped those encounters: the facts of travel, common meals, domestic space, and the interactions of bodies. The result is a refreshing new look at the man who proved so significant - and so controversial - in Western culture.
