E-BooksOne–Dimensional Empirical Measures, Order Statistics, and Kantorovich Transport Distances

One–Dimensional Empirical Measures, Order Statistics, and Kantorovich Transport Distances
Free Download Sergey Bobkov, "One-Dimensional Empirical Measures, Order Statistics, and Kantorovich Transport Distances "
English | ISBN: 1470436507 | 2020 | 126 pages | PDF | 1235 KB
This work is devoted to the study of rates of convergence of the empirical measures $mu_{n} = rac {1}{n} sum_{k=1}^n delta_{X_k}$, $n geq 1$, over a sample $(X_{k})_{k geq 1}$ of independent identically distributed real-valued random variables towards the common distribution $mu$ in Kantorovich transport distances $W_p$. The focus is on finite range bounds on the expected Kantorovich distances $mathbb{E}(W_{p}(mu_{n},mu ))$ or $ ig [ mathbb{E}(W_{p}^p(mu_{n},mu )) ig ]^1/p$ in terms of moments and analytic conditions on the measure $mu $ and its distribution function. The study describes a variety of rates, from the standard one $ rac {1}{sqrt n}$ to slower rates, and both lower and upper-bounds on $mathbb{E}(W_{p}(mu_{n},mu ))$ for fixed $n$ in various instances. Order statistics, reduction to uniform samples and analysis of beta distributions, inverse distribution functions, log-concavity are main tools in the investigation. Two detailed appendices collect classical and some new facts on inverse distribution functions and beta distributions and their densities necessary to the investigation.

E-BooksData and Doctor Doom An Empirical Approach To Transmedia Characters

Data and Doctor Doom An Empirical Approach To Transmedia Characters
Free Download Data and Doctor Doom: An Empirical Approach To Transmedia Characters by Mark Hibbett
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 312 Pages | ISBN : 3031451724 | 24 MB
This book defines a straightforward way to analyse fictional characters through data. It shows how a data-led approach can produce rich analyses of characters, their surrounding storyworlds, and their authors across time and different types of media. It uses the Marvel Comics' character, Doctor Doom as its main case study, and demonstrates the advantages of this approach by comparing the results to those taken from a survey of fan attitudes. It also uses the methodology to analyse the differences between the American and British characters who share the name "Dennis The Menace". Finally, it offers a range of further uses for the tool. All datasets and tools are made available to download, so that other researchers can use the methodology and compare their own results to those generated in the book.

E-BooksMoral Collectives Theoretical Foundations and Empirical Insights

Moral Collectives Theoretical Foundations and Empirical Insights
Free Download Moral Collectives: Theoretical Foundations and Empirical Insights
English | 2023 | ISBN: 365840146X | 318 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 4.2 MB
Whether terrorist attacks, refugee or financial crises - the challenges of globalized modernity expose those areas that Durkheim described as anomic and whose processing still illustrates the central position of moral communication. There is some evidence to suggest that progressive functional differentiation does not erode morality, but actually promotes a remoralization of society through increasing communicative networking. Wherever grievances come to light and it is not foreseeable how they could be satisfactorily resolved in the modus operandi, morality provides a promising instrument which, in the form of moral collectives, is able to permeate everyday life and shape society. In this sense, the anthology is dedicated to a theoretical as well as empirical analysis of morality, which takes shape as a genuinely social quantity via moral collectives.

E-BooksEmpirical Methods in Natural Language Generation Data-oriented Methods and Empirical Evaluation

Empirical Methods in Natural Language Generation Data-oriented Methods and Empirical Evaluation
Empirical Methods in Natural Language Generation: Data-oriented Methods and Empirical Evaluation by Emiel Krahmer, Mariët Theune
English | PDF(True) | 2010 | 363 Pages | ISBN : 3642155723 | 6.91 MB
Natural language generation (NLG) is a subfield of natural language processing (NLP) that is often characterized as the study of automatically converting non-linguistic representations (e.g., from databases or other knowledge sources) into coherent natural language text. In recent years the field has evolved substantially. Perhaps the most important new development is the current emphasis on data-oriented methods and empirical evaluation. Progress in related areas such as machine translation, dialogue system design and automatic text summarization and the resulting awareness of the importance of language generation, the increasing availability of suitable corpora in recent years, and the organization of shared tasks for NLG, where different teams of researchers develop and evaluate their algorithms on a shared, held out data set have had a considerable impact on the field, and this book offers the first comprehensive overview of recent empirically oriented NLG research.
