English | 2012 | pages: 317 | ISBN: 3642272320, 3642428916 | PDF | 3,3 mb
Malnutrition and its related symptoms are both frequent and deleterious effects of cancer treatment. Despite the importance of targeted nutritional interventions in ameliorating these effects, however, publications providing up-to-date information on novel nutritional approaches and strategies are lacking. This book is intended to fill the void by describing and evaluating in detail the nutritional strategies that may be employed to alleviate a wide variety of cancer treatment effects. The guidance provided will help to improve the survival and quality of life of cancer patients, and has the potential to dramatically affect how evidence-based clinical practice is established and improved over the coming decade. The author is a distinguished expert in the field who has more than 25 years of experience in oncology nutrition and has been involved in establishing and implementing a Clinical Nutrition Oncology Program.

E-BooksFowler–Nordheim Field Emission Effects in Semiconductor Nanostructures

Fowler–Nordheim Field Emission Effects in Semiconductor Nanostructures
Free Download Fowler-Nordheim Field Emission: Effects in Semiconductor Nanostructures by Sitangshu Bhattacharya , Kamakhya Prasad Ghatak
English | PDF (True) | 2012 | 353 Pages | ISBN : 3642204929 | 4.4 MB
This monograph solely presents the Fowler-Nordheim field emission (FNFE) from semiconductors and their nanostructures. The materials considered are quantum confined non-linear optical, III-V, II-VI, Ge, Te, carbon nanotubes, PtSb2, stressed materials, Bismuth, GaP, Gallium Antimonide, II-V, Bi2Te3, III-V, II-VI, IV-VI and HgTe/CdTe superlattices with graded interfaces and effective mass superlattices under magnetic quantization and quantum wires of the aforementioned superlattices. The FNFE in opto-electronic materials and their quantum confined counterparts is studied in the presence of light waves and intense electric fields on the basis of newly formulated electron dispersion laws that control the studies of such quantum effect devices. The importance of band gap measurements in opto-electronic materials in the presence of external fields is discussed from this perspective. This monograph contains 200 open research problems which form the very core and are useful for Ph. D students and researchers. The book can also serve as a basis for a graduate course on field emission from solids.

E-BooksThe Intended and Unintended Effects of U.S. Agricultural and Biotechnology Policies

The Intended and Unintended Effects of U.S. Agricultural and Biotechnology Policies
Free Download Joshua S. Graff Zivin, "The Intended and Unintended Effects of U.S. Agricultural and Biotechnology Policies "
English | ISBN: 0226988031 | 2012 | 312 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Using economic models and empirical analysis, this volume examines a wide range of agricultural and biofuel policy issues and their effects on American agricultural and related agrarian insurance markets. Beginning with a look at the distribution of funds by insurance programs-created to support farmers but often benefiting crop processors instead-the book then examines the demand for biofuel and the effects of biofuel policies on agricultural price uncertainty. Also discussed are genetically engineered crops, which are assuming an increasingly important role in arbitrating tensions between energy production, environmental protection, and the global food supply. Other contributions discuss the major effects of genetic engineering on worldwide food markets. By addressing some of the most challenging topics at the intersection of agriculture and biotechnology, this volume informs crucial debates.

E-BooksClimate Change and its Effects on Water Resources Issues of National and Global Security (2024)

Climate Change and its Effects on Water Resources Issues of National and Global Security (2024)
Free Download Alper Baba, Gökmen Tayfur, Orhan Gündüz, "Climate Change and its Effects on Water Resources: Issues of National and Global Security (NATO Science for Peace and Security Series C: Environmental Security)"
English | 2011 | pages: 302 | ISBN: 9400711425, 940071145X | PDF | 16,0 mb
National and global security can be assessed in many ways but one underlying factor for all humanity is access to reliable sources of water for drinking, sanitation, food production and manufacturing industry. In many parts of the world, population growth and an escalating demand for water already threaten the sustainable management of available water supplies. Global warming, climate change and rising sea level are expected to intensify the resource sustainability issue in many water-stressed regions of the world by reducing the annual supply of renewable fresh water and promoting the intrusion of saline water into aquifers along sea coasts, where 50% of the global population reside. Pro-active resource management decisions are required, but such efforts would be futile unless reliable predictions can be made about the impact of the changing global conditions on the water cycle and the quality and availability of critical water reserves. Addressing this wide spectrum of issues, a team of expert authors discusses here the impacts of climate change on the global water resources, the long-term resource management goals at global and local scales, the data requirements and the scientific and technical advances necessary to mitigate the associated impacts.
