Edgar Cayce came to be known as the "father of holistic medicine" and the founding voice of alternative spirituality. The Sunday Times of October 9, 1910, profiled the Christian mystic and medical clairvoyant in an extensive article and photo spread headlined "Illiterate Man Becomes a Doctor When Hypnotized". At the time, he delivered daily trance-based medical readings in which he would diagnose and prescribe natural cures for the illnesses of people he had never met. By the time of his death in January 1945, Cayce had amassed a record of more than 14,300 clairvoyant readings for people across the nation, with many of the sessions captured by stenographer Gladys Davis. In the 1920s, Cayce's trance readings expanded beyond medicine (which nonetheless remained at the core of his work) to include "life readings," in which he explored a person's inner conflicts and needs. In these sessions, Cayce employed references to astrology, karma, reincarnation, and number symbolism. Other times, he expounded on global prophecies, climate or geological changes, and the lost history of mythical cultures, such as Atlantis and Lemuria. Cayce had no recollection of any of this when he awoke, though as a devout Christian the esotericism of such material made him wince when he read the transcripts.Contrary to news coverage, Cayce was not illiterate, but neither was he well educated. While his knowledge of Scripture was encyclopedic, Cayce's reading tastes were somewhat limited, but he did spend several early years as a clerk in bookstores, but never did write any of the books that bear his name, he had a son named Edgar and many others that assembled his readings into popular form along with a bevy of independent authors.Thomas Sugrue (1907-1953) was a widely respected and world-travelled print journalist who wrote for many of the nation's leading newspapers and magazines, including the New York Herald Tribune and The American Magazine. Born in Connecticut on May 7, 1907, Sugrue discovered the work of psychic Edgar Cayce (1877-1945) when he roomed with Cayce's son, Hugh Lynn Cayce, at William and Lee College in Virginia. Sugrue later sought medical help through Cayce's channeled readings, and went on to become both Cayce's biographer and a lifelong supporter. Sugrue's There Is a River appeared in 1942 (he revised it in 1945) and was the sole biography written of Cayce during his lifetime. The book popularized Cayce's work in alternative healing and channeling, and became a founding document of New Age spirituality. Sugrue died in New York City on January 6, 1953.

Edgar Cayce, widely acclaimed clairvoyant and forerunner of the holistic health movement, is revealed here as a pivotal figure in the transition from the esoteric and metaphysical movements of the late nineteenth century to the New Age movement. This book describes and evaluates his psychic "readings, " more than 14,000 trance discourses that address medical, theological, historical, and psychological concerns raised by thousands of inquirers. The author evaluates evidence for and against Cayce's reliability in the subject areas emphasized by the readings. Cayce's medical and psychological advice is shown to be well ahead of his time in many respects, and his spiritual teachings are appraised as a reconciliation of Protestant mysticism with New Thought and Theosophy. Although the medical readings provide intriguing evidence for Cayce's ESP, his clairvoyant time travel illustrates the fallibility of information derived through hypnotic trance. The author contends that the contents of the readings reflect the knowledge and interests of their recipients as much as Cayce's personal opinions and beliefs. This is the first book to focus solely on appraising the entire body of the Cayce readings from a scholarly perspective."Edgar Cayce is caught between uncritical admirers and dogmatic skeptics. The scholarly world will benefit from this knowledgeable and even-handed treatment of Cayce. Johnson gives effective critiques of Cayce's thought as well as an in-depth exposition of it."- James Burnell Robinson, University of Northern IowaK. The New York Times once named Edgar Cayce "the most fascinating man in America." Despite having only an eighth-grade education, he was called on by world leaders (such as Woodrow Wilson), prominent scientists (such as Thomas Edison), and Hollywood producers to advise them on their most pressing problems. Treasure hunters, stockbrokers, and oilmen made millions of dollars from his talents, while he himself lived much of his life in poverty. And in a hypnotic trance so deep he was twice pronounced clinically dead, he diagnosed illnesses with astonishing accuracy and prescribed medical treatments that were years ahead of their time, curing people with life-threatening diseases.Cayce was born to a family of tobacco farmers in rural Kentucky, and as a child he began having visions beyond waking reality. Although he had no idea where his powers of perception came from, through years of hardship and struggle he used his abilities to help others in need, offering invaluable medical and spiritual guidance. Even as he became famous for his sensational achievements, and fell in with the most influential people of his day.Cayce never sought the limelight, and his greatest legacy may be the wisdom he left behind through the messages he brought from the "other side." Now. in this definitive biography. Sidney Kirkpatrick offers an inspiring portrait of Edgar Cayce with an entirely new perspective on his life and legacy. The only author to have been granted unrestricted access to all of Cayce's letters and papers, Kirkpatrick has uncovered fascinating details about his work as a psychic, and is the first to crack the code of Cayce's trance readings to show how they were used by such prominent individuals as George Gershwin, Nelson Rockefeller, and Marilyn Monroe. Edgar Cayce, An American Prophet is the first authoritative account of the life of this legendary figure-a humble man with a radiant gift, whose words and deeds continue to inspire legions of followers.SIDNEY D. This collection of essays, which rediscovers Edgar Allan Poes not forgotten lore, comprises a two-headed scholarly body, drawing from communication and linguistics and literature, although it also includes many other academic offshoots which explore Poes labyrinthine and variegated imagination. The papers are classified according to two main domains, namely: (I) Edgar Allan Poe in Language, Literature and Translation Studies, and (II) Edgar Allan Poe in Communication and the Arts. In short, this book combines rigour and modernity and pays homage, with a fresh outlook, to Poes extra-ordinary originality and brilliant weirdness which prompted renowned authors like James Russell Lowell and Howard P. Lovecraft to claim, respectively, that Mr. Poe has that indescribable something which men have agreed to call genius and that Poes tales possess an almost absolute perfection of artistic form which makes them veritable beacon lights in the province of the short story. Poes weird tales are alive in a manner that few others can ever hope to be.

The Son of Tarzan is a novel written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the fourth in his series of books about the title character Tarzan. It was first published in the magazine All-Story Weekly as a six-part serial from December 4, 1915-January 8, 1916. It was published in book form in March, 1917.Alexis Paulvitch, a henchman of Tarzan's now-deceased enemy, Nikolas Rokoff, survived his encounter with the ape-man in The Beasts of Tarzan and wants to even the score. He lures Jack, Tarzan's son, away from London and into his clutches, but the youngster escapes with the help of the ape named Akut. The pair then flees into the deep African jungle where two decades earlier Tarzan himself had been raised. Jack Clayton, now on his own, becomes known as Korak the Killer and builds a reputation for himself in the jungle...Tarzan is a fictional character, an archetypal feral child raised in the African jungles by the Mangani "great apes"; he later experiences civilization only to largely reject it and return to the wild as a heroic adventurer. Created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzan first appeared in the novel Tarzan of the Apes (magazine publication 1912, book publication 1914), and then in twenty-five sequels, three authorized books by other authors, and innumerable works in other media, authorized and not.Tarzan is the son of a British lord and lady who were marooned on the Atlantic coast of Africa by mutineers. When Tarzan was only an infant, his mother died of natural causes and his father was killed by Kerchak, leader of the ape tribe by whom Tarzan was adopted. Tarzan is his ape name; his real English name is John Clayton, Earl Greystoke.Tarzan has been called one of the best-known literary characters in the world. In addition to more than two dozen books by Burroughs and a handful more by authors with the blessing of Burroughs' estate, the character has appeared in films, radio, television, comic strips, and comic books.Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) was an American author, best known for his creation of the jungle hero Tarzan and the heroic Mars adventurer John Carter, although he produced works in many genres.
