E-BooksThe Doomed Horsemen of Bataan The Incredible Stand of the 26th Cavalry

The Doomed Horsemen of Bataan The Incredible Stand of the 26th Cavalry
Free Download The Doomed Horsemen of Bataan: The Incredible Stand of the 26th Cavalry By Raymond G. Woolfe Jr.
2016 | 416 Pages | ISBN: 1442245344 | PDF | 2 MB
This is the story of the last mounted American troops to see action in battle, when, in late 1941, six-hundred men and their horses held off the Japanese invasion of Luzon in the Philippines just long enough to allow General Douglas MacArthur's forces to withdraw to Bataan. The 26th continued to fight on horseback until late February 1942 when, tragically, they were ordered dismounted and their horses and mules transferred to the Quartermaster's center and slaughtered for food for the defenders. It is on record that the 26th troopers refused to accept meat rations from their animals, regardless of their own starvation. This stirring account of a little-known aspect of the Philippine campaign is military history at its best.

E-BooksAnthem for Doomed Youth twelve soldier poets of the First World War

Anthem for Doomed Youth twelve soldier poets of the First World War
Jon Stallworthy, "Anthem for Doomed Youth: twelve soldier poets of the First World War"
English | 2005 | ISBN: 1845292219 | EPUB | pages: 192 | 47.9 mb
Leading poet and former professor of English Literature, Jon Stallworthy, tells the story of the lives and work of twelve major poets of the First World War and provides selections of their best work. The First World War began with flag-waving, parades and poets inspired by abstract ideals. In part this reflected the national mood , but it revealed an almost universal failure to understand what modern mass warfare would really mean. The story of the 'war poets' is also the story of an awakening to the full horror of what the twentieth century came to know as 'The Great War'. Wilfred Owen said, 'My subject is War - and the pity of War'. He also said 'true Poets must be truthful'. The best war poetry was the work of writers who were also serving soldiers and was born out of their desire to tell the truth about what it was to be a soldier in the trenches - what it felt like, what it did to you and what it did to your fellow soldiers, friend or foe. The greatness of the poetry lay not just in the writer's talent, but in the unflinching accuracy with which it portrayed their terrible circumstances.

Advocate for the Doomed The Diaries and Papers of James G. McDonald, 1932-1935
Richard Breitman, "Advocate for the Doomed: The Diaries and Papers of James G. McDonald, 1932-1935"
English | ISBN: 0253348625 | 2007 | 864 pages | EPUB | 8 MB
The private diary of James G. McDonald (1886-1964) offers a unique and hitherto unknown source on the early history of the Nazi regime and the Roosevelt administration's reactions to Nazi persecution of German Jews. Considered for the post of U.S. ambassador to Germany at the start of FDR's presidency, McDonald traveled to Germany in 1932 and met with Hitler soon after the Nazis came to power. Fearing Nazi intentions to remove or destroy Jews in Germany, in 1933 he became League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and sought aid from the international community to resettle outside the Reich Jews and others persecuted there. In late 1935 he resigned in protest at the lack of support for his work.
