What the Grown–Ups Were Doing Battenburg, Bottoms and Bridge – An Odyssey Through 1950s Suburbia
Free Download Michele Hanson, "What the Grown-Ups Were Doing: Battenburg, Bottoms and Bridge - An Odyssey Through 1950s Suburbia"
English | 2012 | pages: 368 | ISBN: 0857204882, 1471129136 | EPUB | 2,0 mb
Michele Hanson grew up an 'oddball tomboy disappointment' in a Jewish family in Ruislip in the 1950s - a suburban, Metroland idyll of neat lawns, bridge parties and Martini socials. Yet this shopfront of respectability masked a multitude of anxieties and suspected salacious goings-on. Was Shirley's mother really having an affair with the man from the carpet shop? Did chatterbox Dora Colborne harbour unspeakable desires for Michele's sulky dad? Whose Battenburg cake was the best? An atmosphere of intense rivalry prevails, with Michele's mum very suspicious of her non-Jewish neighbour's domestic and personal habits, and Michele very wary of children's games like 'Doctors and Nurses' that might bring bottoms into the equation. And with glamorous, scheming Auntie Celia swanning around in silk dresses demanding attention, Michele has a lot to contend with. Only the annual holidays to the south of France relieve the tension.

E-BooksThinking and Doing A Monograph by Moshe Feldenkrais

Thinking and Doing A Monograph by Moshe Feldenkrais
Free Download Thinking and Doing: A Monograph by Moshe Feldenkrais By Moshé Feldenkrais; Reuven (Robbie) Ofir
2017 | 65 Pages | ISBN: 1884605281 | EPUB | 2 MB
In 1929, a young Moshe Feldenkrais published his Hebrew translation of the book, The Practice of Autosuggestion by the Method of Émile Coué. Feldenkrais not only translated the book, but composed and added his own observations in two additional chapters, which are presented here in this monograph. Feldenkrais noted that the work of Coué was primarily focused on resolving problems, and realized that these same ideas could be used proactively to improve one's abilities. Feldenkrais writes, "We will explore this issue and see if we can take it a step forward. Using examples from real life, we will demonstrate that by using autosuggestion we can achieve far superior results rather than merely being in a condition no worse than someone else's." Feldenkrais offers numerous examples of how autosuggestion can enhance abilities and improve performance and concludes that imagination and correct thinking are more effective than willpower. For many years, Autosuggestion was a reference point for Feldenkrais as he continued to develop his work. He mentioned Coué in various aspects of his later publications, including Body and Mature Behavior and Awareness Through Movement. Both of these books are considered milestones in the development of the Feldenkrais Method.ReviewThinking and Doing provides us with unique insights into how Moshe Feldenkrais viewed the importance of the unconscious and its hidden abilities to effect health, well-being and action. This small but powerful monograph contains within it the genesis of what will become the Feldenkrais Method. - David Zemach-Bersin, Co-Founder, The Feldenkrais Institute of New York --David Zemach-Bersin, Co-Founder, The Feldenkrais Institute of New York This little gem is a must read for Feldenkrais fans, historians and anyone who wants to learn more about the roots of the Feldenkrais Method. Not only do we learn how much Coué's ideas influenced Moshe, we get an insight into Feldenkrais' early thinking processes. And it's really interesting to see the debt current brain research owes to Coué's, and later, Feldenkrais' ideas of auto suggestion and use of imagery. --Lavinia Plonka, GCFP, Author of, What Are You Afraid Of? and Walking Your Talk As addressed within Coué's work and in Feldenkrais' commentary, one must begin by understanding that fundamentally in matters of self-control and self-direction, imagination trumps will. By locating the self-image as a product of self-imaging, we can bypass notions of the unconscious and discern how Feldenkrais acquired one of the key pillars of his life's work. If, as Moshe Feldenkrais held, the unconscious is not unconscious, how did he get to that position? First, using Coue's work, he immersed himself in a practical course of study on how to use the unconscious to make one's life better. Along the way he realized that the unconscious is not a thing but a process with constraints that are amenable to utilization. As such, what does that mean for notions of the sub-conscious, consciousness itself, and the vast, vague domain of so-called altered states of consciousness? If we view those terms as territorial maps then the maps should correspond to their respective territories. Feldenkrais realized that the terms were less than helpful ad hoc human inventions having little pragmatic value. The processes they would map, viewed from Feldenkrais' perspective of awareness, require a radically different approach. --Dennis Leri, Feldenkrais Trainer About the AuthorMoshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984), the developer of the Feldenkrais Method, authored a number of seminal books on movement, learning, human consciousness and somatic experience. He taught in Israel and many countries in Europe through the 1960s and 1970s and in North America through the 1970s and 1980s. In his life Dr. Feldenkrais worked with all kinds of people with an enormous range of learning needs from many infants with Cerebral Palsy to leading performers such as the violinist, the late Yehudi Menuhin. He was a collaborator with thinkers such as anthropologist Margaret Mead, neuroscientist Karl Pribram and explorers of the psychophysical Jean Houston and Robert Masters. The breadth, vitality and precision of Dr. Feldenkrais' work has seen it applied in diverse fields including neurology, psychology, performing arts, sports and rehabilitation.

E-BooksThe Knowing–Doing Gap How Smart Companies Turn Knowledge into Action

The Knowing–Doing Gap How Smart Companies Turn Knowledge into Action
Free Download The Knowing-Doing Gap: How Smart Companies Turn Knowledge into Action By Jeffrey Pfeffer; Robert I. Sutton
1999 | 336 Pages | ISBN: 1578511240 | PDF | 32 MB
Why are there so many gaps between what firms know they should do and what they actually do? Why do so many companies fail to implement the experience and insight they've worked so hard to acquire? The Knowing-Doing Gap is the first book to confront the challenge of turning knowledge about how to improve performance into actions that produce measurable results. Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert Sutton, well-known authors and teachers, identify the causes of the knowing-doing gap and explain how to close it. The message is clear--firms that turn knowledge into action avoid the "smart talk trap." Executives must use plans, analysis, meetings, and presentations to inspire deeds, not as substitutes for action. Companies that act on their knowledge also eliminate fear, abolish destructive internal competition, measure what matters, and promote leaders who understand the work people do in their firms. The authors use examples from dozens of firms that show how some overcome the knowing-doing gap, why others try but fail, and how still others avoid the gap in the first place. The Knowing-Doing Gap is sure to resonate with executives everywhere who struggle daily to make their firms both know and do what they know. It is a refreshingly candid, useful, and realistic guide for improving performance in today's business.

E-BooksEveryday Feminist Research Praxis Doing Gender in the Netherlands

Everyday Feminist Research Praxis Doing Gender in the Netherlands
Free Download Koen Leurs, "Everyday Feminist Research Praxis: Doing Gender in the Netherlands"
English | ISBN: 1443860115 | 2014 | 340 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Everyday Feminist Research Praxis: Doing Gender in The Netherlands presents a selection of previously unpublished work presented during the 2011, 2012 and 2013 Netherlands Research School of Gender Studies (NOG) conferences. The contributors are researchers who are working at, or who have been associated with, the universities part of the NOG. The NOG is a top European programme and has a longstanding international reputation for its pioneering work in the field of literary, cultural, philosophical, anthropological and epistemological Gender Studies. Reflecting the wide spectrum of interdisciplinary gender studies, this volume is organised into four sections along four conceptual knots. The four thematic entry-points are space/time, affectivity, public/private, and technological mediation. Each section, introduced by a commissioned established expert in the field, consists of four chapters written by emerging scholars. The book concludes with an epilogue, consisting of a reflective interview with NOG board members. The central emphasis of this volume is twofold: first, the everyday is approached as a concretely grounded site of micro-political, intersecting power struggles. Second, the contributors make explicit connections between theory and their everyday feminist research practices. They provide a reflexive account of their research, and put into words what drives them. The relation between theory and practice has been a key concern of feminist research in recent decades. The two domains are here not considered as oppositional, but rather contributors chart their interconnections and entanglements. The authors cover a wide topical area that includes, amongst others, digital representations of women movements; European homonationalism; fashion modelling and labour; sexual identities; child-birthing discourses; digital documentaries; fan fiction; and the post-human. As a whole, the interventions show how feminist research praxis remains crucial in critically disentangling naturalized routines of daily life, which in turn enables the scrutiny of, for example, the arbitrariness of entrenched power relations and the revealing of contradictory and layered, personal and collective, everyday trajectories. Everyday feminist research praxis, thus, energises possibilities for new forms of recognition, representation and redistribution of power.

As science becomes more deeply embedded in a complex technological infrastructure, has this changed the relationship between the sciences and the various technologies that support them? As our technologies help shrink our world, can we restrict our ethical concerns or must we find a way to face the fact that we are now one world? What do new forms of architecture say about whom we are? Is the design process the new epistemological paradigm? The answers to all of these is "yes" according to Joseph C. Pitt (VirginaTech).
