The Digital (R)Evolution of Legal Discourse New Genres, Media, and Linguistic Practices
Free Download Patrizia Anesa, "The Digital (R)Evolution of Legal Discourse: New Genres, Media, and Linguistic Practices "
English | ISBN: 3111047369 | 2023 | 164 pages | PDF | 26 MB
The primary goal of this book is to reach a better understanding of how the digital revolution has affected language and discourse practices in the field of law. It also explores the complex nature of the techniques and discursive strategies which emerge in the relationship between the different stakeholders (including non-experts) thanks to technological advances. By adopting a discourse analytical perspective which combines both qualitative and quantitative approaches, the book explores the hybridity of new genres and communicative processes. It provides an interdisciplinary platform for researchers, practitioners, and educators to present the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns, as well as any solutions already adopted in their professional areas. Their insights converge in a truly multidisciplinary effort to devise and build advanced networks of knowledge to facilitate the interpretation of data in the field of legal linguistics - with a specific focus on digitalisation processes which concern contemporary legal discourse. The book is meant for scholars interested in the evolution of the interconnection between language and law in digital environments. It also addresses law and linguistics students, ideally with some training in language analysis and particular interest in new media and genres. All necessary linguistic or legal technicalities are, however, approached while bearing in mind a wide range of potential backgrounds and levels of education.

E-BooksJews, Christians, and the Discourse on Images before Iconoclasm

Jews, Christians, and the Discourse on Images before Iconoclasm
Free Download Alexei M. Sivertsev, "Jews, Christians, and the Discourse on Images before Iconoclasm"
English | ISBN: 100942453X | 2024 | 294 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Between the sixth and eighth centuries CE, the image emerged as a rhetorical category in religious literature produced in the Mediterranean basin. The development was not a uniquely Christian phenomenon. Rather, it emerged in the context of broader debates about symbolic forms that took place across a wide range of ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups who inhabited the late Roman and early Byzantine world. In this book, Alexei Sivertsev demonstrates how Jewish texts serve as an important, and until recently overlooked, witness to the formation of image discourse and associated practices of image veneration in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Addressing the role of the image as a rhetorical device in Jewish liturgical poetry, Sivertsev also considers the theme of the engraved image of Jacob in its early Byzantine context and the aesthetics of spaces that bridge the gap between the material and the immaterial in early Byzantine imagination.

E-BooksData Analytics for Discourse Analysis with Python

Data Analytics for Discourse Analysis with Python
Free Download Data Analytics for Discourse Analysis with Python: The Case of Therapy Talk
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1032419016 | 190 Pages | PDF (True) | 16 MB
The book provides a brief primer on data analytics, defined as the science of analyzing raw data to reveal new insights and support decision making. Currently underutilized in discourse research, Tay draws on the case of psychotherapy talk, in which clients' concerns are worked through via verbal interaction with therapists, to demonstrate how data analytics can address both practical and theoretical concerns. Each chapter follows a consistent structure, offering a streamlined walkthrough of a key technique, an example case study, and annotated Python code. The volume shows how techniques such as simulations, classification, clustering, and time series analysis can address such issues as incomplete data transcripts, therapist-client (a)synchrony, and client prognosis, offering inspiration for research, training, and practitioner self-reflection in psychotherapy and other discourse contexts.

E-BooksCultural Linguistics and Critical Discourse Studies

Cultural Linguistics and Critical Discourse Studies
Free Download Monika Reif, "Cultural Linguistics and Critical Discourse Studies "
English | ISBN: 9027214050 | 2023 | 212 pages | PDF | 3 MB
The present volume explores the meeting ground between Critical Discourse Studies and Cultural Linguistics. The contributions investigate culture-specific conceptualisations, ways of framing and conceptual metaphors in political discourse, as well as cultural models, cultural stereotypes and stereotyping. The individual authors use quantitative (e.g. corpus-based approaches) and/or qualitative methods. They address a range of contexts, e.g. Europe, the US, Japan, West Africa, and a variety of topics, e.g. migration, presidential elections, identity, food culture, concepts of health. The papers included in this volume show that ideologies, the key concern of Critical Discourse Studies, cannot be analysed independently of cultural conceptualisations. In a complementary, dialectic fashion, cultural conceptualisation, the central concern of Cultural Linguistics, have ideological implications, sometimes subtle, sometimes very straightforward. The present volume thus illustrates that travelling on this meeting ground is a natural and fruitful endeavour for both approaches.

E-BooksThe Invention of Peter Apostolic Discourse and Papal Authority in Late Antiquity

The Invention of Peter Apostolic Discourse and Papal Authority in Late Antiquity
Free Download The Invention of Peter: Apostolic Discourse and Papal Authority in Late Antiquity By George E. Demacopoulos
2016 | 269 Pages | ISBN: 0812223691 | PDF | 1 MB
On the first anniversary of his election to the papacy, Leo the Great stood before the assembly of bishops convening in Rome and forcefully asserted his privileged position as the heir of Peter the Apostle. This declaration marked the beginning of a powerful tradition: the Bishop of Rome would henceforth leverage the cult of St. Peter, and the popular association of St. Peter with the city itself, to his advantage. In The Invention of Peter, George E. Demacopoulos examines this Petrine discourse, revealing how the link between the historic Peter and the Roman Church strengthened, shifted, and evolved during the papacies of two of the most creative and dynamic popes of late antiquity, ultimately shaping medieval Christianity as we now know it.By emphasizing the ways in which this rhetoric of apostolic privilege was employed, extended, transformed, or resisted between the reigns of Leo the Great and Gregory the Great, Demacopoulos offers an alternate account of papal history that challenges the dominant narrative of an inevitable and unbroken rise in papal power from late antiquity through the Middle Ages. He unpacks escalating claims to ecclesiastical authority, demonstrating how this rhetoric, which almost always invokes a link to St. Peter, does not necessarily represent actual power or prestige but instead reflects moments of papal anxiety and weakness. Through its nuanced examination of an array of episcopal activity-diplomatic, pastoral, political, and administrative-The Invention of Peter offers a new perspective on the emergence of papal authority and illuminates the influence that Petrine discourse exerted on the survival and exceptional status of the Bishop of Rome.

E-BooksSpoken Discourse Impairments in the Neurogenic Populations

Spoken Discourse Impairments in the Neurogenic Populations
Free Download Spoken Discourse Impairments in the Neurogenic Populations: A State-of-the-Art, Contemporary Approach
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031451899 | 427 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 22 MB
This comprehensive volume provides balanced and easily readable chapters on contemporary topics around discourse production in patients with neurogenic disorders. Discourse broadly refers to a unit of language longer than a single sentence, typically used in a spoken or written format to express ideas, feelings, and opinions or to interact with others. As the field of research in speech-language pathology, aphasia and related neurogenic disorders, and clinical decision-making to manage neurogenic impairments is rapidly expanding, there has been an increased focus on discourse analysis and therapy to enable patients to speak well again. Various user groups and people with lived experience (e.g., aphasia, dementia, traumatic brain injury, right hemisphere damage, etc.) are also increasingly focused on the impact of neurogenic impairments on domains of conversation and changes in language skills beyond the smaller linguistic components of single words and sentences that are traditionally supported by speech-language therapy.
