Shelley's Visions of Death
Free Download Andrew Lacey, "Shelley's Visions of Death"
English | ISBN: 303149539X | 2024 | 207 pages | EPUB, PDF | 462 KB + 3 MB
This book provides the first modern, in-depth analysis of Percy Bysshe Shelley's engagement with the phenomenon of death. It argues that, for Shelley, this most nebulous of realities represents, first and foremost, possibility: Shelley's poetic writings on death are both numerous and varied, presenting his reader, with differing degrees of confidence over the course of his brief but brilliant career, with several key visions of what death might be or actually is. Shelley's Visions of Death stresses the seldom-appreciated fact that death was one of Shelley's most enduring preoccupations, and also demonstrates the poet's power to imagine, with startling variety, that which lies beyond the boundaries of experience.

Invading the Realm of Demons, Disease, and Death
Free Download Carl E Roemer, "Invading the Realm of Demons, Disease, and Death"
English | ASIN : B0CW5H12N4 | 2024 | 360 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This study of the miracles attributed to Jesus in the Gospels begins with a survey of the sciences, because in our present cultural context, materialism is the dominant approach to and understanding of our world, of history, and of our very selves. If the materialist's understanding is true, then there is no such thing as miracles, because every event must occur as the result of some previous material events. Contemporary biblical scholarship mostly approaches the miracle stories from a materialist point of view. It questions their historicity because they violate what has now become the entrenched modus operandi in our culture and society, operating with the idea that the universe is a closed nexus of cause and effect. The miracles are understood, then, as products of the community and not historical reports, although, according to this line of scholarship, they may be based on some vague recollection of Jesus's activity that somehow had healing effects. Modern science, however, as one scientist has put it, in climbing the mountain of knowledge, has reached its peak and found a theologian at the top. The sciences, in other words, have led to the implication that our universe has a creator and that the universe and the human genome have been designed.

Gabrielle Petit The Death and Life of a Female Spy in the First World War
Free Download Gabrielle Petit: The Death and Life of a Female Spy in the First World War By Sophie De Schaepdrijver
2015 | 273 Pages | ISBN: 1472590864 | PDF | 3 MB
In central Brussels stands a statue of a young woman. Built in 1923, it is the first monument to a working-class woman in European history. Her name was Gabrielle Petit. History has forgotten Petit, an ambitious and patriotic Belgian, executed by firing squad in 1916 for her role as an intelligence agent for the British Army. After the First World War she was celebrated as an example of stern endeavour, but a hundred years later her memory has faded. In the first part of this historical biography Sophie De Schaepdrijver uses Petit's life to explore gender, class and heroism in the context of occupied Europe. Petit's experiences reveal the reality of civilian engagement under military occupation and the emergence of modern espionage. The second part of the book focuses on the legacy and cultural memory of Petit and the First World War. By analysing Petit's representation in ceremony, discourse and popular culture De Schaepdrijver expands our understanding of remembrance across the 20th century.

Death and Life in the Ottoman Palace Revelations of the Sultan Abdülhamid I Tomb
Free Download Douglas Scott Brookes, "Death and Life in the Ottoman Palace: Revelations of the Sultan Abdülhamid I Tomb "
English | ISBN: 1399510428 | 2023 | 330 pages | PDF | 38 MB
This book reveals multiple aspects of life in the Ottoman palace, in both its public space (the chancery) and private space (the royal household and the harem). It does so by exploring the Sultan Abdülhamid I Tomb in Istanbul, investigating the paths that open to us through the graves of the royalty in the mausoleum and those of the courtiers, eunuchs, concubines and female harem managers in the garden graveyard around it. The treasure of information at this graveyard allows us to piece together a wide spectrum of details that illuminate the court funerary culture of the era, from architecture and calligraphy to funerals and epitaphs to turbans and fezzes and poetry, as we come to an understanding of the role of royal cemeteries in strengthening the bonds between the reigning House and the populace and enhancing the legitimacy of the dynasty's rule.

E-BooksA Death Retold Jesica Santillan, the Bungled Transplant, and Paradoxes of Medical Citizenship

A Death Retold Jesica Santillan, the Bungled Transplant, and Paradoxes of Medical Citizenship
Free Download A Death Retold: Jesica Santillan, the Bungled Transplant, and Paradoxes of Medical Citizenship By Keith Wailoo, Julie Livingston, Peter Guarnaccia
2006 | 388 Pages | ISBN: 0807857734 | PDF | 3 MB
In February 2003, an undocumented immigrant teen from Mexico lay dying in a prominent American hospital due to a stunning medical oversight--she had received a heart-lung transplantation of the wrong blood type. In the following weeks, Jesica Santillan's tragedy became a portal into the complexities of American medicine, prompting contentious debate about new patterns and old problems in immigration, the hidden epidemic of medical error, the lines separating transplant "haves" from "have-nots," the right to sue, and the challenges posed by "foreigners" crossing borders for medical care. This volume draws together experts in history, sociology, medical ethics, communication and immigration studies, transplant surgery, anthropology, and health law to understand the dramatic events, the major players, and the core issues at stake. Contributors view the Santillan story as a morality tale: about the conflicting values underpinning American health care; about the politics of transplant medicine; about how a nation debates deservedness, justice, and second chances; and about the global dilemmas of medical tourism and citizenship.Contributors:Charles Bosk, University of PennsylvaniaLeo R.
